I'm in the process of giving a motorcycle away. It was my learner bike and I upgraded. It's been garaged for almost a year and It's registration expired Aug of 2006. After I do a bill of sale / transfer of ownership and complete the release of liability forms am I still liable for any costs or am I in the clear. Does the overdue reg go with the bike. Is there anything else I need to consider now that could bite me later? For example does it make a difference if the bike broken down and used for parts for E-bay versus used on the streets again.
thanks..

Register it as none operational. None operational before the August 2006.
Give it away, the new owner gets it normal registration.
Let us know how it goes. At best registration will be minimal cost for a none operational registration.

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe you need to classify a vehicle as Non-Op before the registration is due.
You can go to the DMV and get an estimate for the fees. Either pay them, or make the new owner aware of the extra cost for the "free" bike. Since it was just August, it shouldn't be a huge fee unless the bike is newer and worth a bit of cash.

When you transfer the title, make sure you release liability and all the fees go to the new owner. The new owner will be responsible.
I just picked up the exact same bike you are giving away a few months ago in the same situation (except mine didn't run) and I think I had to pay like $60 for registration. It is such an old bike that the fees are real low.
