2-5 times a week i take valerie into work in SF ( then go pick her up in the eve :) ) We live near Vallejo that saves $8 in toll/day and $18 fuel (F-150) and i get to ride!!!
I-80 commute westbound, 2up, it was just getting daylight, Pinole area, lane #1 was stopped, we were sharing @ 25mph all at once an 18 wheeler closed in on us from lane #2 the lanes narrowed and we were pinned at 20mph, no way out, back or forward.
R-mirror and side bag were under the trailer. Then the worst thing... .. One car in lane #1, is right on the white line!! it was all but over! My left mirror exploded (mirror on mirror)! How the left bag didn't touch i don't know... after that car, it opened up just enough to get out!! I pulled off near the next exit and waited for the car, nothing. I repositioned my mirror and popped the cowling back on. Wheew! ( i hope he had a break-away mirror too)
i never got the “Oh, Shit” factor, or adrenaline rush. He just closed in on us and i just knew i was in trouble, serious trouble, and i COULD NOT break else dead. calm, cool, focused!
I have re-played this scenario over and over in my mind.
I'm still not sure what I could have done to prevent it.. :confused
Things I learned:
stay the hell away from trucks!!
never share on narrowing shifting lanes
if lane #2 is a little faster than lane #1, stop sharing and move to lane #2.
