Would police take a report on a keyed car? Damages are around $1500.

This would be in Palo Alto.

No, friend's car. Not sure whether to tell her to file a police report or not.

Have her contact Palo Alto PD... she will need the report if she is going to do an insurance claim.

PAPD will take a report. As to whether or not to file one... if she has a suspect, definitely. If she is going to make an insurance claim, she will need a police report for the claim.

If she is not going to file a claim and has no idea who or why her car was keyed, then the only reasons to report it would be for the police to have the info, in case it is part of a trend, or in case it happens again, to have a paper trail. Many times, things like this are a 1 shot deal, but some are part of a long trend of escalating harassment. If that is the case, she should start getting police documentation.

The important thing is, if you are going to make a report, you should do it immediately… right when the damage is found. Not days later.

She can file it online and not hassle with going down & waiting, etc.; http://www.papd.org/onlinereporting/index.html

I thought everyone in PA was smart:nerd

The website says:

"If you are reporting an EMERGENCY, or the crime you want to report is in progress (HAPPENING RIGHT NOW), DO NOT use this form to report it; instead, dial "9-1-1" on your telephone (This on-line system is not monitored continuously).

Sure, come in during business hours and we will be happy to take the report. I am now on nights, and wont be the one to take it, but someone will be glad to help you out.

ive filed two claims on keyed cars in the past .. I did not file a police report. I just told them it was pointless because I had no idea who did it. They did not ask questions. If they do want a police report its easy really up tot he insurance company. They will ask you if you filed one, if you say not yet and they say well need that. Then that is your answer.

If you know who did it, or have an idea they might like that too.

Thanks all. Friend filed a police report. Was curious because I would be inclined to file a report, but good luck doing so in SF. I thought PAPD would be more helpful to its citizens, and it is!

Well it fucking happened again!!! My friend's car got keyed just a week after getting it back from the shop! The apartment manager has refused her requests for assistance, refused to put out a letter asking people if they saw anything, and pretty much refused to do anything helpful.

I told her to file a report with the same officer who took the first report. It seems to me like someone in her apartment complex has an issue.

Anyone have any advice that I should pass along?

Key your apartment manager's car. Won't solve anything, but it'll make you feel better. :D

In reality though, be vocal to your neighbors that they're living in the ghetto, tell everyone that your apartment manager is as useless as tits on a bull, and plan to move (not necessarily in that order). The apathy exhibited by your neighbors and property manager show that people near you have different values than you on property crime, or perhaps even crime in general.

I actually made an error, she's on Del Medio in Mountain View by Lozano's car wash. She wanted a shop recommendation in PA because she goes to school there during the day.

Del Medio is still in Palo Alto. The border starts at San Antonio. Reason I asked abuot Curtner and Ventura is because there are alot of problems that live there.

I would install a car alarm with a "ground fault sensor." If you touch the car with anything metal, it will set off the alarm.

Also, get a "driveway guardian" motion alarm from Bed, Bath & Beyond. Put some duct tape over the red indicator light on the transmitter/sensor and place it in a location (carport) where you can reduce the false alarms, but get an alert when anyone is messing with the car.

Ah I see, thanks. She is a little worried that someone might be stalking her. It's a little weird.

MM4L thanks I will pass on the info about the alarm.

Peaked my interest... Why would she think that?

cardinal03
05-05-2007, 11:20 AM
Apparently there haven't been any other cars keyed at the complex. It happened in the underground part of the garage both times, so that makes her think it's someone that lives there. It happened very soon after she got her car fixed and in the same place on the car, which makes her think someone was looking for and targeting her car specifically, which she translates into someone targeting her specifically.

No sacrificial animal heads on her doorstep yet so hopefully it's just some punk asshole who thinks it's funny to key the same car over and over.

She is a pretty young female and lives alone though, so I suppose it's normal for her to feel some discomfort.

Best case scenario she is overreacting. She is going to park somewhere she has line of sight to her car from her apartment and try to set up some video surveillance (no audio).

Sounds about like the best thing to do. Make sure that she reports this second vandalism, in case it turns out to be something more.
