View Full Version : tire question - will they get me to the shop?

I recently got my 82 Kawi 750 CSR running beautifully, but as I expected I need to change the tires.
The problem is, the back tire is pretty badly unbalanced. When riding, it feels as though the rim were oval and thumps in a very disturbing manner. If you closely inspect the tire you can see that it is sitting very oddly on the rim, slightly bulging in some areas. Am I facing much risk if I ride this 4 miles at low speed through town to the shop?

Not really...
if your going to be going pretty slow then your safe... if you lose the tire.. its the rear and will be controlable
Y not take the wheel off and drive it to the shop?
Nope...pull the rear wheel off. :2cents

I'll take the wheel off. This one will be a first for me.

If you are going to own an OLD bike, you have to learn how to work on it yourself, since finding mechanics who will touch it is hard. Get the service manual so you do the job right.
This also applies to any bike if you want to save money.
Sounds like an old-ass tire is still on the bike. If you try to ride it, you may end up pushing it half the way. ;)

I actually am lucky enough to have a good mechanic who specialises in old bikes. (Jim's Cycle Repair in Fairfield) He did my carbs, fork seals, brakes etc for a very, very low price, you might not believe me if I told you what I got for my money. It takes him a while to get a job done but I'm still happy enough to advertise for him, haha.
I'm not SO intimidated by it, I've taken the wheels off a KZ440 belt drive which has a center stand (with help.. Ok I watched someone do it for me). Though I'm still so generally mechanically uneducated I'm drawing a blank as to how I'm going to safely support the weight of this bike while I rip the rear wheel off.

I sold mine last year or I would let you borrow it, but what you need is a Larin motorcycle lift. They sell them at Sears and Sam's Club for about $80.
A car floor jack and a piece of wood work also.
