My 06 R1 was stolen last july. I reported the incident to Santa Clara PD.

A few days ago, I received a registration renewal form from the DMV. I didn't know that the DMV issued renewal slips for stolen vehicles.

So, I went to the DMV and asked them why I was mailed a renewal letter when my vehicle was stolen. They come back to tell me that the vehicle doesn't come up as being stolen and that I have to notify the reporting agency.

wtf. so does that mean that SCPD dropped the ball in my case?

Contact the PD. They should have the report/180 on file. Maybe the officer/records clerk forgot to put the FCN on the necessary paperwork or something.

Did you get a case number for the report? Sounds like someone forgot to enter it into the stolen vehicle system.

Did you contact your insurance company when the bike was first stolen ?? I know where I work we always make sure to contact DMV and alert them, we file an index in the stolen vehicle database and if there is recovery we know right away and contact the insured so they can either decide to go pick it up or just sign it over to insurance.

update...i guess SCPD entered the vehicle in the database via the VIN. The plates were not on the bike; hence, the bike does not come up stolen, unless ran via the VIN.

I still thinks it's weird that the DMV sent me a renewal notice. I should be nice and renew it for the SOB that took it.....fk that!

An 06 R1 in July of 2006. I can see how that plate may still be at home. It's a new (even today) bike, plates probably just came in, and everyone knows that once you put a plate on the vehicle, it's not so new anymore. Hahhahaha...

Tell the DMV that the vehicle was reported stolen, and hang that plate up in your garage.

If the plate wasn't on the bike when stolen, it can't be entered in the system as being stolen. You could get scolded for keeping the plate, as if anyone would ever bother. You're supposed to turn it back in.

As suggested before, did you contact the reporting agency and see if it was not entered? If not to have it corrected?

DMV has a form called "Statement of Facts" (online). Just drop them a short note that it was reported stolen (when. where, what- they don't care about the How)) , quote the case number and fergetaboutit (but keep a copy).

Send a copy to the PD if ya like (a Supe), but I wouldn't get in a sweat over it. What exactly are you going to sue them for? I don't see anything that's a cause of action, they didn't steal the bike did they? Reporting to DMV aint going to unsteal it...

This isn't the place to resolve your problem. The originating agency is. If it's Santa Clara PD (SCPD), go back there.

To recap, it appears your bike was stolen 7/06. You reported it to SCPD and got a report number. SCPD said they did everything correctly.

If that's true, SCPD entered your bike, at least by VIN, into a stolen vehicles system (SVS) database.

If it's no longer listed as stolen in SVS, then some agency had it removed as being stolen. SCPD should be able to trace the events which occurred and confirm where that motorcycle is located, especially if it's been sitting in a tow yard and for how long.

Perhaps your lienholder, if any, was advised and you were inadvertently left out of any correspondence indicating the status. It's also possible any lienholder made a decision regarding its status without your knowledge.

The next time we hear from you regarding your bike should be very interesting.

Good point. Was it fully insured and did the insurance company pay you? If so, they are the owners of the bike and not you. It could have been recovered and removed from the system when the insurance company was notified.

no...it was not insured at all (23 days old) and I know I goofed up here...my only concern is; if the vin and plate show up as a valid, un-stolen vehicle; then, other police dept. cannot prove that the vehicle is stolen? correct???? I'm having a SJPD buddy run the vin for me today, we'll see what comes up...

and I don't mean to "sue" SCPD, just hold them liable some how. oh well...I'm still a little sore for losing 12k. but life goes on.

As suggested before. If it’s not in the system as stolen go back to the reporting agency and make sure it is entered. Ask to speak to a Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, ect if necessary.
