View Full Version : Best gauge setup for SV race bike?
I just bought Quinn's '99 SV race bike found in this thread:
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=200634
The bike is ready to go as it is but it has no tach. Quinn has sagely, jedi-like riding skills that find him needing no gauges to tell him what the bike is doing. I, on the other hand, am a relative noob learning the handling characteristics and powerband of a completely new bike (coming off a ZX6R with an almost impossible-to-read tach of its own). I've heard stock tachs are unreliable, is it worth springing for a decent tach? Anyone have experience with simple gauge clusters that won't break the bank? I can't find info on this anywhere.

I recently started riding an SV without any instruments, and was concerned at first too.
It's going to take you about 2 laps to figure out what the engine tone is just before it hits the rev limiter, aka time to shift. No jedi-like skills required. Seriously. Once that's out of the way, you'll never need to take your eyes off the track.

I have an older My Chron setup if you want it, RPM, laps, water temp, and something else I forget. $200.

i always did fine with the old stocker :p It didnt fit in there with the Vortex stay but a few zip ties and it was golden!
But yeah... as they said... i used the gauge MAYBE once on the track. I have since gotten into the habit of taping over my gauges to KEEP myself from looking because i'd rather not scare myself :p
I've seen a couple mychron units and they're pretty close to what I had in mind. I should get used to keeping my eyes on the track but an integrated lap timer would be helpful. How easily does a transceiver hook into it?

The mychron unit has a sensor that picks up the common infrared signal that most laptimers use. AFAIK none of the mychron laptimers have cross connection with a wireless transceiver, that is RF and something the AFM uses to determine places but no track providers that I know of use.
