Did a search but didn't turn up anthing too helpful.

How does contingency money work? From what I have read....

1) You sign up at the beginning of the year and buy said gear from said vendor (tires...gas...etc)
2) You finish in the top 4 and you get a certain dollar amount in a check a few weeks later if you had the appropriate stickers.

Do they pay contingency money for the clubman classes? (I doubt it, but that'd be cool).

Does anyone offer good discounts on tires, gas...etc if you run their stickers? As a potential new racer there's no way I'm going to be fast enough for contingency money but it would be killer to get a break on new tires/gas in exchange for running their stickers.

The tire prices you get at the track are pretty good. AFAIK there are no tire vendors sponsoring new racers, ditto gas. You might get some stickers for discounts on products, Amsoil is doing some minor sponsorship giving certificates.

LP is a good company to apply to , they will give you good discounts on parts.

No contingency in clubman.

your contingency information can be found over on the AFM Website. This includes class sponsors and product contigency.

Main Sponsor page:
http://www.afmracing.org/sponsors.html?sponsors

Class Sponsor page
http://www.afmracing.org/sponsors.html?sponsors_classsponsors

Contingency Sponsor page:

Generally you need to go to the contingency tent with a form on race morning (always nearr tech). have the contingency person inspect your bike for the proper requirements (product, sticker, etc..) they will sign off on the form and keep it for the companies to review to make sure you meet all the requirements to get paid on.

The club will report the information to the companies (results) and you will get your winings.

Some contingency/class sponsors give money, some give product, some give discounts on products. It's all up to the sponsors how they pay out.

Also race finish depends on the sponsor. Some pay out top 3, some add in top novice, some pay out differently. Go check out the pages I listed above for what and who they pay.

Your personal sponsors (LP for example) are your own, and have nothing to do with the AFM.

Oh and there are some contingency sponsors who pay out in Clubman. Michelin for sure does, check out the pages...

That's the jackpot thanks. Wow! Michelin pays Clubman. That gives me hope. :-)

What's up with some sponsors paying 1st, 5th, 10th and 15th? Kinda strange. Lemme see, I'm in 9th but I need some tires so lemme miss a shift. :-)

the first, 5th, 10th, 15th and so on payout was put there by sponsors to ensure more people would wear their badges (stickers), use their products, and promote their companies. Face it- if you're running in 600P or 650TW and you're new out of clubman, what reason would you have for signing up for a cont. that only pays out 1-4th place. Most people wouldn't.

Now if it was paying out every fifth place and a random draw, then for a few minutes worth of time and a sticker on your machine (and think- now you can feel like a real racer!!) you might actually take home some money or product after the race or at the end of the season.

As to the sand bagging issue, I have mixed feelings about it. There were a couple of races where it seemed actually beneficial for me to allow the rider behind to pass so that I would take fifth in lieu of fourth place... but competition is its own beastie and tends to win me over every time.... three thirds and three fourths plus a posiblility of taking third for the season is worth more to me than the few extra dollars I might have won...:teeth

Now for this year all I need is some Pirelli slicks and I can possibly start collecting with them (I got second place in the first two events and had I been running the Pirelli tires and their stickers I could've won $125 from each race- covering almost the whole cost of a set of tires- which is almost the way it's supposed to work).

Good Luck and just remember that the main and #1 goal during your first clubman race at a new-for-you track is just to finish the race. You wont be able to run the race the next day or the next race weekend unless you successfully negotiate an entire race without crashing, mechanicals, going off course, "...the sun was in my eyes," whatever. All that matters is finishing- then you can worry about your lap times.

cheers and good luck

If you can actually figure out that you're in 9th place, you have an amazing track presence. ;)

Sunoco hooked me up with a LOT of $40 vouchers during the year for multiple 10th and 15th place finishes in the 600 classes. Keigwins hooked me up, too.

Sorry, one more question.

If you're prepping to go racing would you

1) build your bike to suit your needs, then apply for your license and enter new rider school

or

2) get your license, enter new rider school and use contingency programs like the LP program that would give you a discount on parts?

I'm really trying to figure out how much of a discount programs like LP's team privateer give you when you are starting at the bottom.

25% off retail. But keep in mind they only carry specific brands/products. (i.e. Akro exhausts, but not Leo Vince, Yosh etc.) Still it's a no-brainer to sign up, nothing to lose except a little empty 4x4" space on your fairings.
