I was on 9 last weekend riding a great ride. in and out of turns and knee jerking very coner except one. There is one hairpin corner that is decelerating. most of the time, I keep my eyes ahead instead on the turn....almost like baseball....keep your eyes on the ball and you cant go wrong. this time i overshot the turn hot and slammed the siderail......did'nt dump it but it stop me in the dirt. if it were a race, it would have cost me precious lap time.

i tired hard to pull and lean to compensate as well as push hard on my outside foot peg (keith code technique) but all didn't help. I guess I can easy up on the speed goinig in and crack it out half way through. any thoughts...?

does anyone know of the turn i am talking about...? it is the part on 9 from scotts valley to 9, about 3 or so miles before the stop sign.

Man if you're joking you have a really f'd up sense of humor.
If not you need to take a minute and read some recent threads about 9.

I think the problem is, you don't have enough time on 9.....you're going to have to ride that road many, many more times before you master it and the first time you ride any other road in the BA, it sets your learning curve backward for conquering the awesome and awe inspiring road of roads, Hwy9....

Most, if not all, difficulties with a particular road can first be addressed by slowing the fuck down. You are correct to be looking through the corner, this will help greatly. Slow down and work on smoothness and perfect form and speed will come.

I received alot of resopnses from my quote "knee jerking" so I thought I should explain myself. Knee Jerking was a term I learrned about 20 years ago when I first started riding. When entering a tight "S" turn, you use your body weight i.e "Leaning with your knee extending to the ground, to help cornering at higher speeds, then when you strighten up and begin the next corner, you jerk your knee up and towards the tank to quickly help transfer your weight to the opposite side.....I found that this techinque helps me enter any tight "S" tight turn.

Jeez, ease up--Hey, 20 years ago that would've been a hot tip! :laughing That was before the interweb and before countersteering (don't worry, I'm old, too!)

^^^ sup steve..

I know what turn tht is.. and it is more like a ile from the stop sign..

its a bad ass turn.. what you got to do is stick out your knee farther.. as far as you can to create more lean angle. plus it helpp create drag like a spoiler to slow you down without braking much in the turn. However if you go wide make sure you get sparking sliders for that guard-rail. you might as well look cool in a crash.

Recent events have demonstrated that there is no such thing as "mastery" of Highway 9, or any other public road.

If I may be somewhat insensitive here, can I say that Highway 9 has "PWNED" many of those who claim to "own" it?

If you want to drag knees, and get your tires all melty looking, do a track day.

Ok, "knee jerk" is explained in a new light. Never heard the term used that way before, but I don't know everything.

Now, I'd like to know what this one means?

I keep my eyes ahead instead on the turn...

Do you mean that you look directly in front of the bike, and not into the turn?

Or are you saying that you look where you want the bike to go? (which, in a turn means that you're looking somewhere other than "ahead"?

People often go off the road because of where they're looking.

what tires were you running?

you should know that race slicks are the only way to go on 9!

and due to the intense heat build up, better air them down to the low 20es, so when the tires warm up after a few laps you get maximum stickyness.

in that particular turn you should EASY get your ellbow down with the right technique. i heared a few experienced riders even get their full body down.

(ok, ok.... no more mojo for the rest of the week.... just couldnt resist)

You are kidding about the knee-spoiler, right? Right? :confused

let me get this straight, you've been riding for 20 years and you don't know about a decreasing radius turn? Or about riding the pace on the street? You were dragging knee on 9 by scotts valley?

You lured us into reading this thread with a harmless enough title, something one who would honestly try to help you out would read...

Go do something productive with your time.. :hand

I know the turn your talking about. Slow down and keep practicing on your lines, speed will come with confidence, which is a byproduct of holding your line.
