Ok, I couldn't find the answer to my question by searching so I was hoping you guys could help me -

I just moved here from TX where I had a driver license with motorcycle endorsement.

Reading over the CA DMV website, it looks like I have to take a written test AND take a riding test to get my motorcycle license in CA. Is this true? Does my motorcycle endorsement in TX help with this at all? I took the MSF class in 2000. There is no driving test for getting your regular drivers license...

Thanks for your help, the DMV site is pretty good, but doesn't really address getting your motorcycle license from out of state.

First off welcome to CA :)

I moved back to CA from NV and had a Class C/F(fire)/M1 and was not required to retake the ride test.

If there is an issue bring your MSF cert with you.

Let me do some research.

edit: no luck with the DMV website.

Only the written test is required if you've got a M1 from another state. Once you pass these tests, they will give you a temp permit, stamp a hole in your TX license and within shortly you will recieve your DL in the mail.

This is not based any laws and regulations, just my experience from about a year ago, ymmv.

Thanks for the feedback, that's what I've heard from 2 other people also, so I should be set. :)

I was just wondering if it is still the case that one does not have to take the riding test if they already have an out of state motorcycle license. My fiancee was told that she would have to take both tests, but she had a class CM(non-commercial automobile and motorcycle) license from Texas.

I have the same license from Texas.

In Texas, I don't think I even had to take the written tests when I moved from Louisiana.(Been 9 years though so i may remember wrong)

I don't know the answer to your question, but the drive test is easy anyway, so I wouldn't stress on it. The DMV now lets you walk in on Tuesday's and Thursday's between 8:30am and 9am without an appointment for drive tests. I just did it on Tuesday and all said, it took 40 minutes.

I too have moved from TX to the Bay Area just recently. I just took the written exams for both car and motorcycle last week (no driving exam needed). I also registered my bike as well.

coming up on 2 years since I made this thread....only thing I can think of that I miss about TX is my friends.

I miss friends, good TexMex, and Coopers BBQ in Llano.
I could probably come up with a few others, but no matter how much I might miss it, I'd miss Northern California a heck of a lot more...

Will be eating at Coopers (in Llano) in about 2½ weeks. Texas Hill Country, taking on the three twisted sisters...

Stop in for breakfast at Old Spanish Trail Diner in Bandera. The Wingers take over the John Wayne room every Sunday EARLY.

Check out www.lonestarmotorcyclemuseum.com

There is a cool little gas station here that has a great BBQ beef sandwich;

Thanks for the list!
OST is definitely on for breakfast. Building next to it burned down over a year ago, but the restaraunt was spared, thankfully.
Vanderpool is a possible, as I've been there a few times already.
That gas station is pretty close to where we're staying (River Inn). Got fuel there last year, but no idea they had good BBQ sandwiches.

If you ever get back there, get up to Dublin and the Dr. Pepper Bottling plant. I believe it's the first bottling plant in Texas (maybe U.S.) where they make Dr. Pepper the way it used to be before the Cuban Embargo (and they changed the formula from cane sugar to fructose). Soda jerks make the Dr. Pepper floats the same way it was done 50 years ago.

You are welcome, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dublin Dr Pepper. I thought I had outgrown Dr. Pepper as the taste did not seem the same to me as when I was a kid, but then I tried a Dublin DP and it was the same as I remembered.

For dinner Saturday night, you need to go to The Inn of the Hills http://www.innofthehills.com/ and eat at the Alpine. They have a buffet that includes Prime Rib and has the best chocolate cake I've ever had.

They always have a very good fish, chicken and pork dish in addition to the prime rib. But make sure you save plenty of room for dessert!

There is also a hotel called the YO Ranch in Kerrville and it is a great place to stay. It is my favorite in the Hill country. Serious Texas character.

Here is a video shot from a GL1800 of the Willow City Loop

If you've not been to the Nimitz museum in Frediricksburg, you really should go. Sometimes they have a live fire demonstration that will blow your mind. The flamethrower ain't shooting blanks...

And last but certainly not least, if you are going to be going to/from Houston you HAVE to eat here;

Every thing here is GREAT, but the chocolate chip pie is an out-of-body experience.

Hopefully, when I get my Tailwind trailer someday, I'll be able to ride out there to the Hill Country factory and pull it home.

You can just take an msf course (which is also an insurance deduction) and then just the written exam at the DMV and you are good to go.
