I was wondering what the healthiest beginners racing class is from a racers perspective?
I think the criteria would be lower horsepower, cheaper (lots of spares), sizeable grid, competitive grid.
Thanks.

I think most people will respond with either 650 twins or 250 production.
I would vote for Formula III, but I like two-strokes!

SV650 fits that criteria.

650's are pretty easy on the tire budget too..

The cheapest route is to race what you already have. what bike do you have for the street?
I watch people start racing on all types.. 600, 750, 1000, 250's etc.... At a beginner's pace, they are all going to be pretty easy on tires. 600 class has some fast MF'ers in it.. but prety much every class has someone flying around.
if you run 750, you still have 600's running up. If you run 1000's it's stil survivable once you make the cut off times to race on Sunday.
650Twins are a ton of fun, but there are a bunch of guys flying on those little things too. Actualy had a fair amount of carnage at the last round.
I started on a 750, two.. no... 4 good friends started off on 600's. 3 of them are now white plates and stayed with 600's.
IMO the is no "dangerous" class.

I have a z1000, but that is my daily ride. I don't plan on racing until next year, at the earliest. I am in the market for a track bike and would like to buy a bike that I could transition into what I would race. I am considering Fawndogs gs500... not sure if that is the way to go, or to find an SV.

Get an SV, best bang for the buck!!!!!!! And I don't even like twins. :)

I am also inquireing into racing and have been pondering about racing my Z1000:) but also looking into the 650twin class, since the Z will be up against the likes of ZX10R and 1000RR's:( thats a loose loose situation

2nsane, I took my z1k to thunderhill last year and coming out of turn 15 there is a small bump. I scraped my exhaust a couple of times and started taking it really easy around that corner. I am far from the best rider and could probably have gotten off the bike more to help the situation. I would also get destroyed down the straight and topped out at around 138 mph. It needs a lot of work on the suspension and it is pretty heavy. So I will keep it to save on the commute and ride the local canyons but want something that can be a little more racy.

Modest, are we? :p
A race-prepped SV650 or race-prepped 250P machine are not bad places to start.

Funny, I read it the way you meant it.. I had to re-read it a few times to see what it actually said.
As for the bikes... the SV will give you the biggest "pool" of parts as well. these things are EVERYWHERE. you swing a little cute pupply without hitting 5 of them.
Damn little SV's... why are they so much fun to ride. It's like an addiction I can't kick.

oh I know about scraping exhaust and pegs, I took my bike to Evolution today and he set it up best he could, the comp is cranked all the way down and still a bit soft:( best mod to the bike so far was a set of Pilot Powers, mabey I just need to buck up and buy a SV for Racing and keep my Z for pleasure.

Exhaust, pegs and almost destroyed my boots too. Adjustable rear-sets would fix the boot problem and another $2k to fix the others, maybe.

Buy it!
That bike is well sorted, and doesn't need anything, except a paint job :cool
With that bike you can be competitive in 500T, but you can also race 450SB, and FIV. The last FIV race at Sears was one of the most fun races I've ever had.
