This is for all you Thursday Night Critical Ass / Napa Marathon dropouts / budding triathletes. I did this last year and had an absolute blast.
The concept is simple. There's a 6-7 mile course, with obstacles every mile or so. Team mates switch off between running and mountain biking between obstacles. At the end, the team mates have to crawl together through a giant mud pit, right before the finish line
Free beer is provided afterwards :Port
The current list of potentials:
- Myself
- yama-emma
- Melificant
- Maron
- jenmonkey
- Dove
- bishop
- wickerman777
- Baptistro (maybe)
Anyone else? Who's in? June 10 in San Jose!
For more info, check out http://www.muddybuddy.com

June 10th. Just edited the original post with the date as well as the http://www.muddybuddy.com website.
I was gonna suggest we have some sort of BARF team contest, but half the fun is the chance to make an absolute mess of things at the finish line :)
Barring no baseball game (I don't have an updated schedule yet) - I'd be 100% up for this. I was looking over the results from last year and a couple of things I noticed.
1. I recognized a few of the names from the Boston teams, that'll make for interesting conversation the next time I'm home.
2. Why are you and your partner listed under the coed 56-65 group? Damn bro - you've aged well!
:laughing

You should come down and do the Nov. Los Angeles one with me. I keep hearing about these and they sound so fun.

Dude, I'm SO in!
See, now if you had told me about this 6 months ago I might not have flaked on the whole running partner thing. ;)
This looks like a blast!
What's the next step? Do we have enough people to do BARF teams?

Sounds good. When do you figure you'll know?

It's the combined ages of the competitors. My team mate last year was 29.

I'm tempted to, just for the party! Plenty of time to plan it out.
Then again, with your 1:30 half marathon time and your power on a mountain bike, I'm thinkin you could take it with a good team mate.

When you figure that none of us made the starting line of the Napa Marathon for one reason for another, suddenly it doesn't seem so bad ;)
This looks like a blast!
What's the next step? Do we have enough people to do BARF teams?
We have to register and compete as teams of two, so people need to pick partners.
Since teams have to share a bike, the most important thing is to make sure both people fit on it - a 4'11 gal probably shouldn't team up with a 6'4 guy.
I'll try to call tomorrow, just to make sure they aren't close to selling out.
After that, start training :)

Booooo. I'd do it if I could. I can ride a bicycle, but can't run yet. Oh yea, so I went up the front side of 9 yesterday for the first time in ages on my Cannondale. Yay! So fun trying to beat all the sportbikes on the descent. Had a sketchy moment where I thought I might just highside myself, but it all worked out.
Hey, if you go down for the Nov one, keep me in mind. I should be able to run reasonably fast by then.
Dude, who ran a 1:30 half marathon? I ran a 1:42 offroad. It was hard! Hopefully doing a full marathon next year...if I don't break anything else in the meantime. That could be asking alot though.

Wanna do Hamilton sometime? That's the last of the three mountains in the Bay Area I need to conquer :)

How do you almost highside on a bicycle?
Hey, if you go down for the Nov one, keep me in mind. I should be able to run reasonably fast by then.
We'd have me, you, and Jeff (jtigert) doing it - one more and we'd have two teams. If we got some good trail riding in too, that could be a fun weekend :)

Remember the guy I told you about who showed up to a mountain bike ride - with sweats, a t-shirt, no helmet, sneakers (no toe clips) and a 10 year old bike - and left me and Harpo in his dust? That would be him (jtigert). I hear he's goes pretty good on a motorcycle too ;)
Hopefully doing a full marathon next year...if I don't break anything else in the meantime. That could be asking alot though.

Yea, Hamilton. I can do it on my mtn bike prolly in like a month or so. If I can get some good workouts in between now and then. My Effin' job sucks a big fat one and I work ALL THE TIME. I'm lucky if I can go socialize like once a month.
Oh yea, pajama boy. I remember that one.
My goal in life is to be able to smoke everyone on a mtn bike in my pj's too! :teeth
Word up on the so-cal muddy buddy. I really hope I have agility back by then though. If not, I'll just come down and ride trails with you guys. I'm pumped to get away from here for some fun trips. Let's do mtn bike camping! :cool

Dude, you should ALWAYS wear a helmet...esp if you think you might fall off bridges onto rocks in third world countries. Not that I would know anything about that or anything......:wow
Seriously, I'd probably be dead right now if I hadn't had a helmet on. And we were ascending (so don't just wear one on the descents).

I just got an email from Muddy Buddy registration - there are still slots available, but they're starting to fill up as the event approaches.
On that note, people should pick team mates and register!
http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1394030
The team names can be fun - last year my team was "The Mudder Puckers" :)
I can edit the opening post of the thread to show the teams as well, just so people know who needs a teammate. If you've found a team mate, go ahead and announce it! Bap and Wickerman? Dove and Emma? Mel and Maron?

I'm probably in Jer. I'll PM you in the next couple of days.
Let me get this straight, it's probably a 6-7 mile total distance, so your time is basically decided by the combined time running by the partners. The biking is more of a rest than anything else no? So, running 10 minute miles you could finish in an 1:00 - 1:10? Is that about right?
MrCrash
05-16-2007, 12:23 PM
My teammate last year ran a 10K in 1 hour, 10 minutes. I ran one in 55 minutes. Our time for Muddy Buddy was 1:04 - I rode 3 sections and ran 2, while she rode 2 and ran 3.
Winning age group times were around 40 minutes.
It started with a 1.2 mile climb last year - I passed a lot of people walking their bikes up it. From there, it was mostly downhill to the finish, with some small rolling down-and-up sections.

That sounds about right, 11 minute miles and 9.2 minute miles for combined approximate average 10 minute miles.
So to be in contention we each need to run approximately 6-7 minute miles for 3 miles on hills. :wow
While you were biking, you weren't passed by any runners were you?

I've got the biking thing down and my legs are strong as all hell but I haven't been training for running. Should I start concentrating on jogging for this event? I'm a hill climbing fool on a bike but I haven't ran in along time. How are you for running Bap?

05-16-2007, 03:33 PM
I just ran 11 miles yesterday at about 10 minute miles, and my normal daily run is about 6.5 miles up and down pretty steep hills in 70 minutes, so I think we're covered on the running part. I figure if I get to "rest" between runs, I should be able to put together three - 8-9 minute miles. :thumbup

Mike, wanna do a beginner cyclocross race in the fall? I think there are ones where all the beginners race together (guys and girls in one race) so I could cheer for you as you're lapping me :teeth
Bap, I never knew you were a runner :cool
Do you usually do a bunch of events a year? I want to do the Pacific Trail series next year (I was hoping to do it this year, but ofcourse the broken leg thing hampered things a bit). We should get a group of people together to hit up the races each month...they are up and down the coast. and look like SOOO much fun.

Each race features a 6-7 mile course and 5 obstacles. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride the bike. At the 1st obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. The runner will arrive, complete the obstacle, find their bike, and begin riding. Teams will continue leapfrogging each other through the entire course. At the end of the race, racers will crawl through the infamous Mud Pit crossing the finish line together!
You need to do all 7 miles and all obstacles. :( weekends are for sleepin :cry

The first runner will end up running approximately 4 miles and biking 3 miles, the first biker will ride approximately 4 miles and run 3. I consider my biking my "rest" time (or maybe it's just wishful thinking) :)
Steph, I just started running in January to train for the SF marathon in July, but I'm enjoying it. Had a hard time getting started due to injuries from a moto accident last July, but funny enough, my left leg feels better now when I'm walking or running than when I'm at rest. I'm still a noob, but I think I may be a lifer.

COOL!
Yea, I wanted to do a marathon last fall, but ended up with a torn ACL, a skin graft, and a concussion (don't ask).
You're leg feels better when you're moving because you're getting blood flow (aka oxygen) to the injured parts.
Just take care of your knees if you're running alot on the streets. Mix some trails in there and some speed workouts on the track. Ever heard of Yasso 800s? They work...look 'em up on Google ;)
Congrats on finding the joys of running!

Who's running the Cyclocross race you're thinking of doing?? Is that just the name of the series or could I run my full suspension XC trail bike in it? I know the CCCX.org series has different CX, XC, DH, and Road classes.

Wow, that sounds so simple, it may actually work. By that token, I'm probably on pace to run my first marathon in about 4:30.
I'll check it out more accurately next Tuesday when I'm at the track. I do very little running on pavement right now aside from some paved portions of trails and the track once a week, mostly I am running hills on fire trails near my house.
Knees have not been a problem in the last couple of months until this past Tuesday, took me a full day to recover, and am just now feeling strong again.
But you should go to this thread to chat more on this. ;)

I just Googled it too - it definitely sounds like something to incorporate into my regular workouts. I *just* started running again last week after taking two months off to let my ankle heal.
I'm planning on running my first marathon later in the year, after a bunch of different multisport events. I've got some work ahead of me if I want to do a 4:30!

Mike, go to the marathon thread as well, and post. I'd be more than happy to run with you in the East Bay Hills, Piedmont High is the best track around, and probably half way between you and me, and some awesome trails right off of Redwood Road and Skyline. My normal runs are extremely sane, and should probably be done a little slower, so I'd be more than happy to run with you.

'Cmon, you don't know what 'cross is? Aka Psycho cross?
It's the name of the sport. There are special 'cross bikes. They are expensive! Most newbs do cross races on mtn bikes. You can do one on anything, really. And then when you get serious, you look into a special cyclocross bike. The guy I climbed Shasta with races road in the summer, cross in the fall, mtn in the spring and bc skis all winter! Agreed - I ran there weekly with Team in Training to prepare for Wildflower last year. Great facility - hard to believe that's a high school!
When I did that sub 55 minute 10K, my heart rate was through the ceiling, averaging around 182. I generally keep it a little slower than 10:00 / mile for runs under 5 miles. As I approach 10 miles, that drops to 11:00 / mile. Like I said, lots of work ahead of me for a 4:30 marathon - the Yasso 800 method Steph referred to should help with that.
I'll head over to the Marathon thread in a bit!

I knew about the Cyclocross specific bikes - I didn't know that I could use other bikes to race those events though! I remember pushing some dude on a CX specific bike on the singletrack at China Camp. While the trails there are pretty tame, it didn't look very comfortable :)

Well, I timed my run today, running 5 miles, with a 4 minute rest between miles, and got these times:
9:23, 9:15, 8:38, 8:30, and 8:28 in that order, and felt pretty good. I'm gonna try to shave 20-30 seconds per mile on race day.

Uh no. It's on trails. It's basically a loop you do on whatever bike you have. But the loop has really technical sections. So you are forced to dismount and run while carrying your bike. It's all about getting really good at dismounting and mounting really fast. Cross bikes actually look like road bikes (hoods and cradles) however, the geometry is such that it is as nimble as a mtn bike. They are geared differently too and have beefier wheels and tires, but no suspension (cuz there's no REAL downhill or anything and you're running over the rocks).
You do this loop for a set amt of time as fast as you can (usually an hour) and basically you feel like you're gonna die. :teeth
Sounds like my kinda sport!
Anyway, you guys. You're making me so jealous.
Bap, mile repeats rock. I miss tempo workouts.
Just don't get too ambitious on race day. Too fast too soon and you'll crash and burn. You'll naturally run faster cuz of adrenaline.
Solis, when is your next newbie china camp day??? Yes, I am coming as a newbie. My legs are no where near where they used to be. I just rode Calavaras, Felter, sierra on the mtn bike. Dang, it was hard! And that used to be my "easy, wake up at 4am and go ride" ride.

If I find something that looks or sounds fun, I'll let ya know!
Yea dude, ride what you brought ;)
Anyway.. you know there are crits every tuesday night in San Jose, right? I figure now that you are in the southbay alot more, you might be interested. My other friend Mike was trying to get me to do a couple last year. They have a beginner category. And NO, you dont' need a crit bike (those are expensive too).
And if you want to get into track racing, Hellyre Velodrome is also a stone throw away from me. You can rent track bikes. But beware, they don't have brakes!
That's something else I've wanted to try though I feel like I need to heal before I go crashing again. :teeth

The next China Camp ride can be whenever you're ready. When do you feel like giving it a shot?
I take it your legs aren't quite ready to knock out Calaveras / Felter / Sierra on your roadbike yet?

Cross bikes actually look like road bikes (hoods and cradles) however, the geometry is such that it is as nimble as a mtn bike. They are geared differently too and have beefier wheels and tires, but no suspension (cuz there's no REAL downhill or anything and you're running over the rocks).
You do this loop for a set amt of time as fast as you can (usually an hour) and basically you feel like you're gonna die. :teeth

So Jen and I - Team "Slippery Monkey" went ahead and completed the course in 1 hour and 8 minutes. We probably could have knocked 2-3 minutes off of our time if we weren't grappling in the mud pit at the end, but since we were the only team that made it to the starting gate, we won the BARF competition by default!

My original plan was to attempt to "win" the one-mile climbing stage on the bicycle. I ran with the lead pack of four for maybe the first quarter mile, but my heart rate of 190 let me know that "ees not possible win". I dropped back to around 10th (out of 50-60 teams in our wave), and put it into cruise control.
We crossed the line sometime between 9 and 10 AM, were hosed off by a firetruck, and headed straight for the free beer with our new friends.

Jen: Dude, are you sober yet? Let's get out of here and get some food.
Me: (after standing briefly) Uh...no.
Jen: Damn Asians! Is your truck a stick?
Me: Yeah
Jen: Damn, I've never driven one of those before. It's just like a motorcycle, right? I bet I could do it. You have full coverage insurance?
Me: Aw, what the hell...
So off we went, as Jen taught herself the intricacies of driving a manual transmission, in my truck, on one of the most technically demanding roads in the Bay Area...

Here's a breakdown, from the website:
Leg 1: 1.0 miles, steady climb over the entire mile
Leg 2: 1.3 miles, gradual downhill, fast leg
Leg 3: 1.3 miles, downhill with a short steep section
Leg 4: 1.4 miles, gradual downhill
Leg 5: 1.3 miles: Flat to finish
I ended up going to my small ring about 1/2 of the way up that first hill, but mostly because I really attacked that first quarter mile.
