I think they're steel as well. About the only aluminum caliper pistons were in the radial Sumitomo's that came stock on R1's from 2004 up.
There's a school of thought that aluminum pistons transmit more heat than steel and thus are more prone to fade...

I'd say steel due to expansion rates...

The reason why I asked is that I also believe that they are supposed to be steel, yet the used pair of '03 gsxr 1000 calipers that I picked up off ebay several months ago but just got around to cleaning and cracking the other day have aluminum pistons.
I wonder if they switch to aluminum ones in '04? I know the 03-04 calipers are very similar except for the pads; the parts #'s I can find online (ronayers, oneida.com) indicate different parts...
I don't know why someone would be industrious enough to switch out the pistons in a set of calipers then sell them on ebay but never understimate the energy of the unscrupulous.
