is there anyway to remove links out of a chain without using a chain breaker?

Several; just depends on how medieval you want to get. You can grind of the existing rivet "heads" with just about anything; Dremel, power grinder (on the end of a drill motor or a real body-shop grinder), flat file... It is likely you will get into the side plate and need to discard it, but that comes with the territory.

More important is getting the new master rivet "staked" (flared, mushroomed- whatever you want to call it) "just right" and the side plate squeezed in correctly.

There are several ways to do it. None are really worth the time or trouble. With a chain breaker it can be done quickly. Usually on several different sized chains. They're worth the coin!!

Thanx for the info. Found a chain breaker!! 520 kit was easy to install!!
