I had a blast riding with you all that made it out to the San Jose ride. Shall we hit up Pleasanton BMX park?

Here's the link:

http://www.ihatebikes.net/pages/pleasanton_bmx_park.html

I was thinking June 16th, morning to afternoon.

This time I'm bringing both my springer and BMX.

I had a great time in SJ, looking forward to Pleasanton as well. I'll be there with the camera again. :)

Do we know about any food places near by or make it a bbq? I got a small portable grill but not sure if it's ok for the park.

Now that you did that, someone will break a chain or cable. :)

There's a bike shop right on Main Street so we should be good for any bike problems.

BTW here's that video I was talking about Friday night. Just plain nutty!

Mad skills no doubt, but um... this is why I sport a full face.

Scotty Cranmer loses some teeth.

A couple of different possible things going on for the 16th, I may or may not be able to make it, will post up if I can. Tentative right now.

Another classic helmetless faceplant resulting in lost teeth.

You can get them at Trail Head Cyclery in San Jose. Most bike shops that specialize in mountain bikes should have a variety.

The bmx park is close to work so I stopped by after work and took some pictures.

The park is really nice, the dirt is a bit dry and dusty but looks decent. There are some rocks and some of the jumps are falling apart, nothing too bad.

Here's a panoramic picture of the park.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321002-O.jpg

Starting from the left, the jumps are tamer. Nice stuff like single whoops, big berms.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321135-L.jpg

Here's right next to the same area, cool whoop-dee-do section.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321288-L.jpg

The jumps are easy here, not worries if you case.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321219-L.jpg

Middle section, some more technical jumps.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160320932-L.jpg

View of the same area father back. The little kid in the picture was riding a bike around the track. :)

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321073-L.jpg

In the back was a small mini track, really really tight. I think it's a pump track but not fully finished.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160321382-L.jpg

This is the advanced area, the jumps are steeper and father apart. Still these are mostly tables, no crazy doubles.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160320889-L.jpg

One of the tables in the advanced area.

http://robscomputer.smugmug.com/photos/160320850-L.jpg

There's also two picnic benches, portopotties, water, and a telephone. I was there around 6pm and wasn't too hot but there's very little shade.

By the way, anyone considering this at all if you're not a dirt jumper or want to try it out sometime this is quite possibly the safest possible environment to lear in. The course is funded by the city of Pleasanton and they surely don't want any suits. The entire course can be rolled as there are no "true" doubles and every single jump is a tabletop. The doubles that do exist have rounded tops and backsides so they can be rolled like whoops.

I agree, anything with two wheels besides a road bike should have no problem here. Well except those tandem bikes.

While taking the pictures a little girl about 4 or 5 years old was riding her 12" bike over the beginner area just to get an idea.

Yeah I'd be down for an after work ride sometime, I work in Livermore. I'd stop by tonight but have to do a dinner thing w/the wife and mother in law. I think I may bring one of the 20"s out next time.

Also, don't forget Livermore has a dirt track also right off of Vasco, however it is more racetrack oriented than the Pleasanton one which is definitely a jump park.

indeed... the rake feels a little chopperish, but overall it feels pretty sick... I cut the head tube a little shorter than planned so only like 3/4 of the neck actually grabs the tube, and i had to relocate the top triple to over the neck... any way the swap only took like 1/2 an hour... so if I no likey, i switchy

There was a freeride guy who showed up later. Mentioned that this Saturday is a down hill race at Sandhill. I guess it's a big race so a lot of the free ride people will be over there.

http://www.vintagebmx.com/goldhutch.htm

I talked to a few people and it was a trade off between getting 8" travel and a much heavier bike, or 6" and something that can be good for *almost* everything. Also I'm not a big jumper, hoping I'm getting a bike that is overkill so I don't have to worry about breaking anything.

It's a Specialized Enduro, has fox air shocks and forks. There is a more freeride version with coil springs, adjustability of the air version looks more suited to me.

I had the Specialized Enduro Comp and it was great - but not for me. Being the big dude I am I needed something with more suspension and the weight doesn't bother me, especially since I lug around a 200lb. dirtbike all day long. I suck at climbing to begin with, so it isn't a big deal that I have to push my bike.

But I think for you, Rob, the Enduro is going to RULE. You should convert your RockHopper to a singlespeed and loose all the MTB stuff for extreme freeride action!

I suck at climbing as well, I rode (mostly walked) my bike up 5 miles of ashpalt road plus fireroad, 2000 ft climb. Might as well carried a snowboard up since it was about as useful as the bike.

After going to the bmx park I really see why so many people go single speed. My chain was hopping off the rings, skipping on the cog. Might go with a chain guide first then single speed later.

Been checking out Dan's Comp and there are some nice 20" completes as well.

My BigHit is going single-speed. I just hate the derailer, and shifting. To me, it actually makes pedalling HARDER. I'd rather just have one speed and force myself to overcome climbing.

Your right, it's the loop from the parking lot of the Steven Creek Reservoir. It was my first time riding this trail and besides the road climb, was actually really fun. The wider trail going down hill was hard for me, the ground was so slippery.

Do you know the exact trail that has a river crossing? It was a little river but fun to jump into. I have a map of the area but forgot to take notes as I passed signs.

It's just a personal preference. I was a sponsored BMX'er back in my teens... so the less hassle with shifting and such, the better. It what I grew up on and I've never been a fan of multi-speed bikes. Essentially what I'm looking for is a full suspension, aggressively sprung BMX bike :teeth

I absolutley love the geometery of my BigHit. Once I get 170mm of travel up front, I will feel much better.

I have the utmost respect for XC'ers. I was at 24 Hrs of Adrenaline this weekend volunteering in the timing tent. My brother had a 4 man team (On The Couch II) and they are extreme athletes (athletes that drink a lot of beer!). I'm a big fat, strong dude that likes to fall and go boom.

One gear fits my style and preference of riding. It's not about the chain falling off, it's just about not having multi-gears. :p

Yeah, we used to have a little hit on the left side that you would hit at speed and sail over the ditch the water flows through on canyon. It was good for about 20 to 25' of distance if you hit it right, otherwise you would come up short and your rear wheel would explode on contact. This was on hardtails though.
Grizzly flats and Charcoal also have river crossings, but those take you back up to 9/35.

I can do maybe 20-30% of the double blacks at Northstar. My favorite routes:

Karpiel > Flameout > Woodchuck (fire road) > Karpiel

Flameout > Woodchuck > Karpiel

Sinuous > Flameout > Woodchuck > Karpiel

Dropping down from the Big Springs Lodge at the halfway point to the base, I remember Deer Path as being kinda fun too.

The middle parts of Karpiel and Sticks and Stones (between Flameout and the Woodchuck fire road) are insane. Boondocks is supposed to have the best flow of any trail there, but I've never done it - I'm definitely doing it next time out.

they would be fine if i didnt cut the stem on the wrong line... just gotta get used to the turn in... no biggie. but since I did cut it short, the top triple doesnt hold the center stem, so im sure the strength is compromised... i will get another fork and do it again, but it rides killer as is... i just dont know about flat groundin from 8 feet up and having the front end explode. at least i got the fork for free, and that retarded ass mistake didnt cost anything but time.

Great time today! The weather wasn't too hot and just right. Glad to meet you Bad Kitty, you're little boy has a very different crawl style. :)

While it doesn't look impressive, the jumps there were pretty big, and you had to pedal.

Dion, after riding around Jake's 20 around the track I don't think I could handle non-suspension any more. It was really rough, and I didn't even jump anything.

After checking out Giedon's 26" dj bike, it feels just like a cruiser but with front suspesnsion. Really nice!

We had another guy from SF (Gideon) stop by, he's in down town as well. Since he just moved to SF and looking for places to ride, a SF ride would be great. I've never ridden in SF and looks like you know the good spots.

Yes, the rear triangle is heavily bent towards the right. Also the right crank arm is bent enough that it's resting on the chainstay. And the bars as well.

Friend said he was hit by a car while riding. Must have been a Mack truck to bend Profile cranks.

So how do you like the STP?

Dion Rides
06-19-2007, 09:26 AM
The Giant STP is NICE!

Messing around on the BigHit is like walking around with ankle weights, and then taking them off. That's how it was with the STP - super light and the geometry just lifts you up into the air. The mechanical disc brakes suck ass - but I'm so used to hydraulic that maybe I'm just being picky. Better than caliper armed brakes, I guess.

It came as a single-speed, just what I wanted. Sucks, 'cause I ordered a single-speed set-up and they shipped it. Now I have to return it.

I got a decent deal on the bike - $811 OTD.

I checked out the STP at Cal Bicycles and it was really nice. Felt just like a bmx but with 26" wheels, that nice short feeling.

Also noticed the brakes on the SS version weren't great, I felt a lot of flex when braking. You might want to upgrade to a better cable set, or even run just a hyrdo rear. Nice thing with cable you can run a gyro.

These are really nice, adjustable lever.

From Palo Alot to 84 to 880 to 580 seems to be the quickest. 680 North bound is usually slower.

Or you can go through niles canyon. when you reach the stop sign at the end of the canyon bust a left. stay on that road until you hit the park on stanley.....

Dion,

Are the forks non-adjustable?

I just got back from Trailhead in San Jose. Guys are pretty helpful, got a full face helmet that fit great. They also have a nice collection of bikes there. The Demo 7 and Big Hit are so nice! The forks were bigger than some motorcycles.

Say, isn't there a trip to Northstar coming up? Hmmmmm......

:teeth

It's on back order but *should* get here sometime before July. I checked out a few other dj bikes (stp, p1, sledgehammer) and framesets (Atomlab, Santa Cruz, Revell). I really wanted something simple like a single speed and decent components.

Building a frame up was really expensive, and there wasn't much choices for a single speed. So I went with the Eastern for bit more money. Looks good on paper but I ordered it on faith, couldn't find anyone locally who sells them. From all of the reviews seem positive and the specs it's a good build.

Once it gets here I'm going to make a video review of the bike. I would really like to see how much of a difference the stp is from the night train, if chromoly is really a smoother ride or not.

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT!! CALABAZAS PARK IS OFFICIALLY OPEN AND READY FOR RIDING!!

I just got back from Stan23's house (he bought my Sledgehammer! Another member for our little crew!) and on the way back I went to Calabazas to check on the progress. I talked to one of the designers, a dude named Matt, and he told me the official open date was this last Monday - pretty anti-climatic if you ask me, but oh well - it's good to ride there now! There were a bunch of Groms riding, and the park is very nice. I think I might even like it better than Pleasanton. I'm going there instead of Pleasanton tommorrow. Anybody care to join me?

Now that that's out of the way, let me tell you my initial impressions of the Giant.

1. It's light. Not as light as my BMX was, but...

2. ...the geometry makes up for it. I got over a 36" pile of leaves yesterday which is about the biggest bunnyhop I've done so far, and ON A NEW BIKE!!

I really don't understand how the designers did it, but I've never been good at bunnyhopping mountain bikes - and here's a dirt jump bike that is derived from a mountain bike and I can hop bigger than I've even been able to do. I probably would be able to go over that chain that Jeff was hopping at the Pizza place from our San Jose ride.

3. The dirt jumper fork needs spacers. I went to the local OSH and got some 1/2" spacers and dropped them in there. It still has full travel, but it's not going to bottom out with my fat ass riding it. The front fork makes a big difference for the joints, too.

I really like the Giant and it's a keeper. I envy the Eastern Night Train, though. They accomodate pegs and that's what I can't do on my bike.

I'll be interested in checking out CALABAZAS on Friday. Driving from Pleasanton might get there around 6pm with traffic.

I never been to a bmx track to ride, anyone interested in this? Can you ride 26"s there?

Glad you like the STP! Has to be the most popular dj bike out there. It's amazing when you look at the angles and specs of the frame, how much of a difference it makes. It's only 2" inches shorter in the chainstays but feels so much nicer. :)

See you there, Rob. Gideon and I are riding Cali on Sunday, as well.

I just realized that, due to the SUCK0RZ dirt riding conditions, I haven't ridden a motorcycle in awhile. I hate this dry condition crap, and roosting dust isn't as fun as roosting mud.

I guess I can ride the MX track, but I'm a trail guy.

Ooh, BTW... Kelly and I are riding USCS on our MTB's tommorrow. Just some light trails and such. I'll keep an eye out. I think there's some ladders out there, somewhere.

Hey Dion,

I'm afraid I won't able to make it tonight. Yesterday at Pleasanton I crashed and broke my collar bone. It was off the little rythm section and the last run of the day. I messed up on the second jump and slammed shoulder first into the third jump.

A lot of thanks to Brian and Casey for driving me to the Hospital. 6 to 8 weeks to heal, but will give me more time to shop for more parts. :)

Take some pictures of Cali for me!

I just got back from Calabazas and it was cool. The jumps in the rhythm section are still WAY too close. Most of the riding was done in the bowl and in Zone 3. Zone 4 is nutty, and the only way you can get the rhythm is to jump the big step-up. When I say big, I mean big. Zone 3 is doable and fun.

I spent most of the time jumping out of the bowl and just getting used to it again.
