What an awesome adventure!
We started the trip from San Carlos with My Dad , myself and someone I had just met Mike. It took 10 hours down through to the Otay mesa border crossing and another 40 miles to Saint Veronica. The temp was about 40 degrees and no heaters in the rooms. We had to build a wood fire in the firepit to keep warm. Met some guys at the bar from San Diego and Tiaquana that were also going to Mikes skyranch the next day.
Woke up the next day at 7:30 got some breakfast and left about 9:00. It was again about 40 degrees as we left for Mikes. Great car and a half wide dirt roads as we went from desert to snow and pine trees. About 50 miles out we stopped and got gas at this brand new place 5 miles before the sawmill. There were also some of the people from Tiaquana we had met earlier. They had 24 quads, 4 bikes and 2 support trucks, 1 Baja bug and a full tube desert racer. Bought some gas and stopped for lunch. It was the best Mexican food I ever had and only $6. The quads left about 30 minutes ahead of us and we had a clear road with a trail to follow. 20 miles out my Dads bike had a catastrophic internal failure and our whole trip changed. Sent Mike back to get our truck and pick up the bike. Fortunately we passed 2 of the support trucks from the other group a few miles back trying to figure out why the quads took a wrong turn. They offered to put the bike in their truck and bring it and my Dad to Mikes sky ranch and back the next day.
Mike and I set off and a while later we saw the group getting gas on the highway. I pulled over to tell them where the truck was. Got some more gas and followed them on a side road that was part of the Baja 1000. We got going as I passed all the quads and 2 of the bikes but passing them put me a little past visual range of the 2 leaders. Followed their tracks for a few miles and decided to pull over to see where everyone was behind me. Took my helmet off and nothing but dead silence. Sat there for what seemed like 10 minutes and decided I was lost. Great! first day in Baja and I’m fucking lost. Finally a bike came by and I hear all the quads coming so I took off behind him. It was only 2 miles to the highway. What a relief. We took off down the highway and hit the road to Mikes. It’s a great 26 mile road you can go 100 mph on in some sections.
The next morning we decided to go with the same group and check out some new roads on the way back. I took off behind the first 2 bikes to miss all the dust of the quads. My buddy Mike was screwing around so he started later in the group. Went down some great roads and single track, stopped to wait for some people and took off again. After a while we waited again but no one showed up . It turns out the guy in the lead didn’t have clue where he was going. So here I am again lost. There were 4 bikes, 4 quads and me the only American. After about 20 minutes of discussion we finally decided to go back as Mike came down the road to get us. So back we go. A ¼ mile up the road one of the guys breaks a chain. So we stop and as they are fixing it the Baja bug shows up for the rescue. Meanwhile Mike is telling these guys Mexican jokes and everyone is laughing their ass off. It took about 45 minutes to fix the chain and by the time we joined the main group 3 hours were lost. Mike decided that we should take off ahead so we did not ride at night. Made it back to the highway, got some gas and took off. Saw my Dad with the trucks on the side of the road and told them all about it. So we went back into town to meet with the group and have some food. As we are sitting there some drunk guy comes down the road doing donuts and misses some of the quads by about 1 foot. Then his buddy in another car does the same and misses me by 3 feet. Time to go!
Mike and I went ahead for about 40 miles of highway and we take the road to Saint Veronica around 5:00, go up a ways and check the map. We think we know our location but 1 wrong turn now would put us lost out of gas and cold at the least. I scout the road ahead for the next turn and Mikes stays in case the other group comes by. Should be about 2 ½ miles to the next turnoff. 2 miles down the road over a rise there were 3 cows and 1 bull with very large horns in the middle of the road about 30 feet away. I sat there for about a minute revving the motor while they stared at me. I didn’t want to piss the bull off and have to make a quick U turn and risk dumping it. Finally they slowly move to the side and I got by. 1 more mile and I saw a road that fit the bill turned back to see Mike. Halfway back the whole group was coming toward me. Mike was in the back so I joined him. It was getting slightly dark and Mike was going slower than normal due to him still wearing sunglasses. The main group was out of eyesight and we were followed by the chase truck. It was getting very dark and our stock lights were virtually useless. Averaging about 10 mph it would take 5 hours at this pace putting us till midnight to reach our destination. A few miles up the road the rest of the group waited. We caught up and started again following the front 2 quads. Much better visibility as we could easily average 40 mph about 15 feet behind and to the side of them. You could not dare to take your eyes off the road as missing 1 rut or pothole would send you off flying. There were lots of puddles that cover the whole road along the way and everyone scrambled each time we came upon them. Lots of fun at 50 mph following 15 ft behind someone. As we were 50 miles from the nearest light bulb the sky looked like a fantastic star map with bright stars all the way down to the horizon. It was surreal to follow the quads lighting the road and seeing the sky at the same time. I think that was the best part of the trip. We made it back about 9:00 pm and got some dinner, beer and tequila not necessarily in that order. Made some good friends with the guys from Tiaquana. Got their e-mail addresses and will probably go riding with them again soon. The grand total for this trip - 2 days off work and $350. Pretty good deal! Good to be back!

Mexico's cool!!
Great write up! I have been stuck 60 miles east of Saint Veronica when it got dark. I no longer go to Mexico without something with a big ass lighting coil & these (http://www.rickystator.com/pages/Oval%20Lighting%20System%20for%20ATVs.html) .
