XR100 vs. TTR125

i want a dirt bike...
i went riding with two of my best friends on saturday, we rode around in the mountains above his house. i was riding his old honda 125 ATC, it was fun, but when i got on my friend's XR100, i was like damn, i want one.
i'm gonna be riding with mostly my friends on XR100s, so logicaly i should get a XR100, but i wanted to know what you guys thaught about the competition, ie TTR125.
i hear they are slow, but really, so are XR100s, how do they compare, both engine and suspention wise.
if i go XR100, which i'm leaning towards now, i'll be getting it from honda of milpitas of course.

Jeff both are great bikes. The xr is the same design they have had for too many uears to count. while the ttl is new it is suited for newer ridders/ small riders. One of my girlfriends is selling her ttl125 (cheep) to get a bigger bike.
The question you have to ask your self is what type of ridding you will be doing.
How tall are you? how heavy are you. what type of ridding will you be doing?

I'd get the XR200/TTR225 for you to start on. Those bikes are a bit too small for an adult. The suspension and setup of the bike won't be right on the xr100 or the ttr125.

Jeff,

Go to HoM and get a CRF150F or CRF230F. You will get much better brakes (disc front), suspension travel (almost double), tires, etc... than on the XR100R. Don't get me wrong, the XR is fun but quite limited if you want to take it anywhere else than fire roads... Ask Bad Dad ;)

I've got both bikes. The xr 100 for my daughter and the ttr for my wife. The ttr is a much better bike, better suspension, a little more power and electric start. Good to start out on but you would be bored of it after a couple weekends. I personally would not ride anything less than a 250 2 stroker or 400 4 stroker. Watch out for the 250 2 strokers, doesn't sound very big but faster than most people want to ride.

One of my learning bikes was the xr 100.. god I hated that thing :D I reccomend a bigger bike, too.

If you're new...and you felt OK on the xr100. Stick there. I had fun on mine. And truthfully, most of these (smaller/fun) bikes are really a minimum investment that you can get most back when selling. If you are "bigger" and you felt the xr100 was too small, I seriously agree with JoeBar concerning the crf230 and crf150. I was about this >-< close to buying the 230. My hand wishes I would have :laughing

Those are both VERY good bikes, and I believe, the future of recreational/fun bikes.

well, i'm about 170 lbs, and 6'6" i know the xr100 is small, but that is part of the alure i guess. kinda like having a fiddy.
i'm buying it as a play bike, and i realize it wont be a YZ250 or anything.
i dont really have the time to make trips to hollister, if i did, i'd probably be wheeling my jeep.
the xr100 or ttr125 is small and quiet enough that i could ride it around in the mountains without pissing too many people off.
its not that i dont think i could handle a 125 or 250 2-stroke, but i dont think i would have the time to ride it, whereas i could go riding with my buddies after school and such.
more than anything i'm looking for comparisons between the xr100 and the ttr125.
from everyone i've talked to, the crf150 is slow as hell, way too heavy and not nearly enough horsepower.

The advantage of the TTR over the XR is that the 03 is now available with electric start... but the XR looks better IMHO

The CRF150 weights 216 lbs and the XR100 only 165. 50 lbs is a huge difference on a minibike :teeth

As for your original question, Jeff. If I were you, and your size, I would go for the ttr125. It has the best base for some add-ons/modifications once you might get used to or bored with the xr??

For his size, I wouldn't go for anything under the TTR125L (the large wheels version) and even with that version, that would just be good for a pit/stunt/backyard bike! Hope that's what you're looking for Jeff!

yes, that is what i'm looking for, a backyard/stunt/pit bike.
i think i'm gonna go out to yamaha of santa cruz county.
if i wanted a reall dirt bike, i'd probably be looking for a YZF or a 2 stroke 250, but i'm not.
