I loved all the old Laguna Seca photos posted here from the 80's and 90's
I attended all 0f the 88-94 USGP races have a few photos from them.

Brings back memories. Seeing those guys wrestle the 500cc machines around the track is something we'll never see again. The relative tame power delivery and traction control of the 4 strokes takes some of the fun out of watching MotoGP.

Schwantz is THE MAN! Demon the the brakes.

I like the 250cc bikes also, Rich Oliver from the 1994 USGP.
He did not have as good a bike as the factory 250 guys but he does great in AMA racing.

yep, I remember watching them get the front wheel off the ground coming out of the corkscrew downhill.

doohan sitting in the middle of the track dazed and confused after hitting a haybale. Living in Oregon at the time I was very dissapointed in his accident right before the 93 race.

I remember one year taking pics at the end of the front straight
trying to get pics of them pulling wheelies out of turn 1 and Lawson's brakes fell apart, he went hard into the wall outside 2.

My pics from 88-90 were pretty bad, I bought a Canon EOS 630 and a 100-300mm lens for the race in 91 and noticed I could get
alot better pics then I could with my old Manual focus Nikon and JC penny's finest zoom lens. I went and practiced panning at the club races at Willow springs here in So. California before the 94 USGP and got alot better at it.
The 250cc bikes were pretty easy for me but the 500's are a so much faster.

Thanks, I was motivated to join this forum after seeing all the great old photos you posted. I went to Laguna once before the USGP races back in 1983 but I did not get all the great rider photos like you did.

I scanned a 3.5" x 5" photo for the Lawson corkscrew pic, I lost my 1983 negatives some how over the years. I lost a ton of negatives from superbike and endurance races at Riverside also.
I don't think it would hold up well at 1920x1200.

Thanks, I kept buying better cameras and lenses to get better Quality, I was using a Canon A2E with a Sigma 70-210 APO f2.8 for most of my photos from the 93-94 races, I went to the Willow Springs motorcycle club races and practised panning so I wouldn't be so overwelmed by the speed of the GP bikes. I still took a whole bunch of photos that were not quite in focus or that I clipped one end of the bike or other off.

You can't ruin a thread by posting a photo of a GP bike.
I wish I could take photos as well as the guy that used to sell the 8x10" and 11x14" photos at the track, I think he was from San Jose Pro Photo or something like that. I also wish I didn't have to stand on a step ladder so I could clear the fence at Laguna. I felt like a pack mule walking around the track with a ladder strapped to my back and a heavy camera bag.

I bought 3 11x14" prints from the San Jose place, Mamola, Schwantz and Rainey, I had them on the front seat of my motorhome when I moved and I left them there too long because the roof leaked and a bunch of my larger photos got stuck together. I still have a few prints that James Crespinel did,
Lawson, Mamola, Rainey and Schwantz.

I had a very hard time trying to get a good photo of Lawson back in 1991, I shot this on ISO 400 so it had alot of grain and I underexposed it. I wish I could take my DSLR and Canon Image stabilised lenses back in time and give it another try.

I think this was one of the best looking GP bikes ever.

Nice pics!

It was during the Friday Morning practice. MotoGP never tests at Laguna Seca. They just do the race weekend.

Awesome thread.

Dainese should bring back those Ice Blue (thats what I would call em anyway) knee pucks.

I remember going up to the races the year when the Aprillia's first got the Chesterfield sponsorship. They didn't start the season with that sponsor they got it a few races in. And this was back before the internet was like it is now. It was a trip to show up and see the bikes in all black instead of the old purple and silver and red.

The two strokes doing plug chops at the end of sessions always made for some cool pics. You'd see the guys all hanging out at the end of the straight... not riding, but in the full gear on the race bike just kicking back, or pushing the bike back to the pits.

Got another request for ya.

How about Christian Sarron?

Got any of those?

Or Sito Pons? Or how about Loris Capirossi when he was racing 125's?

Wayneb
07-02-2007, 01:46 PM
I didn't take any 125cc pics, I used to only take 10 rolls of film so I tried to save as much as I could for the 500cc bikes. In 94 I took 20 rolls of film or about 480 photos, I read about a pro Photographer taking 6500 pics at the USGP last year.

I was very bad in the earlier years when Sarron was riding, even by 1994 I only had about 10% of my action photos come out good, I don't know what percentage of a pro photographers pics are good but I am sure it was much better then mine.

I tried to shoot at 1/250th of a second and I even used 1/125th on a roll or two to get a good blur on wheels and backgrounds. I wish I could have had my Digital SLR back then so I could take as many photos as I wanted and then I would have taken lots of photos of every rider.

I have to be honest here, I didn't remember any 125cc bikes either so I looked in my programs and the last two years 93 and 94 it has 125cc bikes listed as racing. In 1994 for example it shows the 125cc started at 2:30 PM and ran 29 laps. I am starting to get holes in my memory now, getting old sucks so take lots of pictures.

I wish I had a hit rate that high back then. I should of practised more. I also lost a bunch to using a T/C with my Sigma 70-210 f2.8 lens, the vignetting was terrible with that lens. I should of bought the Canon instead of trying to save a few hundred dollars, I would of been able to use it on my Digital SLR too instead of having a big paperweight.

I have bad arthritis in my neck and back now so I can never go and shoot photos all day for 3 days straight again but I hope I can make the USGP next year.

yes the crash was during the race weekend, but GP guys did in fact test at LSR...I worked at the track from 90-93 and was there when Cagiva came testing, Lawson for sure and I think Kocinski as well, although, that could have been a different year....

Lawson brought a 250 SuperKart along and all the Italian mechanics ripped it up in the paddock next to the school at the end of the day....also, another stand out memory from those days was the Newman-Haas Champ Car team was 'sharing' the track with them, and at one point, Mario Andretti took Lawson's bike out and Lawson drove the IndyCar!!!

I wish I had pics from that day....another barfer, getagripgreg was also there that day...prolly 91 or 92

I will certainly never forget the sounds that day,......during testing, it's much easier to hear the differences in throttle applications, both how long they hold it open and how soon they open it again....fuggin stunning to stand next to the track with no one around and witness that... :wow :wow :wow

I bet Gardner would have loved the 1994 and 1995 L.A. Superbike races in the parking lot at the L.A. fairgrounds, now that was a crappy track. Laguna is a difficult track and not perfect but I bet if he were an American who rode it all the time he would have been just fine with it.

Thanks, I never had a disk camera but it was small enough to have a camera with you all the time, not the right camera for racing photos but I have seen people using camera phones at the track.
I bet you could still get some good shots with one in the pits though.

In this picture below, did they connect the rear stand to the bike?

Yes, they did. The rear axle was hollow and the stand had tubes at the top that matched the hole in the axle. A rod was passed through the tubes and though the axle so that the stand became attached to the bike. It was then flipped up and temporarily secured to the tailpiece of the bike by a bungee cord so that the bike could be moved from place to place.
