eariler i was riding up the hill and it became a dead end. i didnt know what to do so i tried making a u-turn and dropped the bike :cry.

so, whats a good technique to fight against uphill and downhill roads? i would hate to have the same thing happen again.

rule #1: if you fight the laws of physics - YOU LOSE

use the hill to your advantage.
if it's too tight to make a uturn, roll to the left, back the bike up to a 90deg perpendicular, then start downhill.
(reverse 3-point turn)

to ride a propper uturn, all you need to do is to adjust your lean angle. and to avoid loosing too much speed - feather the clutch.

clutch and brake control. if its a dead end and your not comfortable of doing the u turn u can always do a 3 point turn like dude said up top.

The rear brake is your friend on steep hills.

It can be very difficult to keep a solid grip on the front brake while rolling on the throttle with the same hand.

Use the rear brake to take one of the jobs away, and allow your right hand complete control over the throttle.

+1.

In situations like this, it's best to make sure the bike is in gear, and then drag the rear brake so you don't roll back excessively, and to free up your right hand for throttle control.

I do not think that the OP is not only referring to starting/stopping on a hill, but also to turning around on a hill at low speed:

Ahh, i should add that if you're going to be making a U turn and you have to set your foot down, always, always, put it down on the high side of the hill. Otherwise chances are good the bike will knock into your leg and push your knee out and that means goodbye upright motorcycle.

As to U turns in general...I don't recall having very many issues with those on hills, so...sorry i can't be more help :(

For me, I get off the bike to make a u-turn on a steep hill. I use the 3-point technique, walking alongside the bike. It doesn't look cool, but the bike stays shiny. Some sportbikes may not have the turning radius needed for a narrow, steep u-turn.

However, I agree with everyone above that it can be done if you want to. The US motorcycle cops and some special competitions in Japan can make incredibly tight turns.

Check this (http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=173005) thread out if you want to practice U-turns on a hill on someone else's bike. :thumbup
