Stupid CBR shock preload adjustment question

I've got a 99 CBR F4. I'd like to adjust the preload for the shock, and I can plainly see the numbers on the collar (positions 1 through 7) but there is nothing to line it up against....like a needle pointing to the selected preload number or a window to see the appropriate number through. As is, I have no idea what setting is sellected. Am I missing something?

should be the number exactly parallel to the shock mount bolt. that would be facing the side of the bike.
or look at the little indents on the preload adjust ramp to see where yopu are.
