How about your ignition system?
My DRZ owner's manual says to test it this way:
* Pull the plug and reattach it to the spark lead
* Then with the plug placed firmly on the engine, the transmission in neutral, the clutch disengaged, the engine stop (red button?) switch (fully out), push the starter switch with the ignition switch in the "ON" position
A blue spark should then jump across the spark plug gap if the ignition switch is working properly.
(I've never done this and I'm no mechanic.)

Sure does!
Off topic, does anyone have an electronic version of the DRZ manual?
It seems from what I have read and from my own experience with my '06 625 SMC that the battery/charging system is somewhat weak for the bike. This is one reason it can be difficult to kick over the bike. Try removing fuses 3 and 4 to disable current to the lights, and then start the bike. It may give you just enough extra juice to the ignition.
If you have drained the battery a bit (this bike can have lost enough battery juice to fire, but will seemingly turn the motor forever) from multiple tries, just jump it from a car battery. Do not start the car, just hook the batteries up together, let them sit for at least a few minutes, then fire the bike up.

Did you send scottiedawg your addy?
JPOO probably is right. But I thought when a battery's been discharged, nothing happens when you hit the Start button.
Anyway I checked the PDF'ed DRZ service manual provided by mikeev (here ya go, antarius: http://www.sixfivepony.com/drz400/ ), which gave some ideas on what to check:
