View Full Version : Adventure Tour on my R1 Near Donner

So I had a great ride from San Jose up to Donner Pass near lake Tahoe and back. I went there to see the "Observed Trials Competition" dirt bike competition: (my event pictures) http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=213897
…and to ride the local roads near Tahoe. This photo-thread is of my day of "adventure-riding" on my R1.
The ride along hwy 80 was smooth sailing for motorcycles. The poor cagers were holding each other up and clogging the lanes, but they left plenty of room for bikes to safely pass without even "lane sharing." The road is so much easier on bike vs truck. Plus, it's summertime and those lanes are really wide when they're not covered in snow.
I arrived at the Trials competition around 10:00 AM and watched all the competitors at all the stations. It was a lot of hiking and a lot of time in the sun, but I still had energy and kept hydrated.
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/images/threads/000/213/897/3321123-dscn9159.jpg
After hiking around all day to see those trials riders do their magic, I was excited to be on my own bike again touring the local back roads. I knew that there were some great roads out there and the sun was out, the weather was nice, I decided to ride around some more before heading home.
I decide to take the side roads along Hwy 80. I can take two roads that will put me right back on Hwy 80 going towards home. Soda Springs Rd & Forresthill rd will provide some rare sights to see without taking me too far from the highway home. What could go wrong?

I've seen com3's photo threads where he rides off into the wilderness snapping pictures and wheelies all along the way. I thought, rather than tearing it up on the highways, wouldn't it be fun to do some exploring off the beaten path? I wanted to poke around some of the smaller roads and take some great scenic pictures with my pocket camera.
Well, I've ridden the local goat trails of San Jose & Santa Cruz. I've even ridden those "adventure" touring roads like Redwood retreat & Summit where they turn to dirt. Plus, now that I've seen Trials riding, I know that bikes can be ridden over anything. I spotted a great looking road on my map program & checked on the satellite maps to see how it looked.
Soda springs has some lodges and is off the main road from Donner snow park. It doesn't look too terribly twisty, but I expect some elevation changes.
The whole place looks like it's part of the national park system. So, I'm expecting it to be much like a trip up Mt. Hamilton. Piece of cake. Besides, this is part of the park system. There's probably gonna be bathrooms and ice-cream stands along the way to make my ride more comfy. I can't wait to stop at some of the scenic vistas to take pictures. The views are great everywhere around here.
Forresthill Rd looks to have some fun twisties. (Satellite view of Forresthill Rd)

Hey, even if there's a little bit of dirt trail, that's okay. I've ridden dirt. Hey, if this guy can ride his BMW with street tires in Donner park to judge the Trials event, then I can ride over a mile or two of dirt trail to get to see some awesome views.

Soda Springs Connects right up to Forresthill Rd then it's back on Hwy 80 towards the bay. "Clearly Forresthill is going to be a piece of cake," I tell myself while looking at satellite photos. Look at that divided road with single & double yellow lines. It's probably just like Hwy 9 only less crowded. That will be a rewarding finale to this fun little adventure.
I set off from Donner Pass to Soda Springs Rd, a smoothly paved curvy road that after, several miles, takes you right to a nice vacation resort. I pulled right up to the lake and was greeted by three beautiful ladies in bikinis. Too bad for you, they were camera shy. I guess I shouldn't yell "Dayum!" with an open-mouth drool and expect to get a picture. The lake side was filled with vacationers soaking up the sun and launching inner tubes into the water. Here's a picture of the lake minus the pretty ladies (sorry).

With bikini-clad women etched in my retina, I continued off on Soda Springs Rd without a care in the world. Funny, it only seemed like moments before I see the "avalanche" sign and the road turns to dirt for a little way. I wonder if this road is tougher than I think?

Undeterred, and armed with mad "trials" skills learned just by watching, I head down the hill. The next sign up is another downer. It warns, "Stop! Turn Around!"
Bah! You buncha killjoys!! Besides, that sign is only for skiers. I press on. It can't be much further until the road becomes paved again. Still the part that read, "you are descending into the American River Gorge" makes it sound like no one will ever hear from me again. Should I be worried? Nah, I've played in the dirt on my XR100 dirtbike, I've even ridden a DRZ 400 Motard with street tires at Metcalf dirtbike park. What can a plain roadway throw at me that I haven't seen?

Well, I'm surprised that the road goes on for several more miles of dirt and I take a quick break to snap a photo of the forest. The dirt road is so nice here, that I wonder if a heavy rain would wash away the dirt & reveal a paved road.

More time goes by…More trees, more vistas, more dirt! I can't get that last sign out of my head "turn around, go back, avalanche." I have to go so slow because of my street tires. Man, this trail is a lot longer than it looked on the map. I haven't seen any civilization for over an hour.

Now, the trail is starting to fork off, but there are no signs telling me which way to go. Suddenly, the only sign of civilization is ahead, but it makes no sense at all. Somebody built a barricade to keep people from driving into a ditch and into the trees. Thoughtful, but I would've preferred street signs –or at least trail markers.

I've just crossed the American River. But, no civilization, still no road signs, and worst of all, no pavement! The trail becomes worse now. My back tire is frequently slipping on the dirt trail. I cross several dry creekbeds. Man, rocks are tough to go over! The bike shifts around unpredictably as it rolls over the rocks and moves them around.

More forks in the road. Luckily there are these pink ribbons that seem to mark the "main" path (I hope!). Anyway, that's the smoothest trail, so I take it.
This path sends me up a steep hill climb. I manage to climb the dirt hill without spinning up the rear too much. Hey, nice view. I take another break. Where the heck is that paved road? It's been hours!

I'm losing track of time and distance. I'm getting tired and my water is running low. The altitude is taking its toll. My world is becoming nothing but trees...

Hmmm…this ride is taking hours longer than I planned. The shadows are getting long and the sun is going down. I've run out of water. I should be close to the halfway point. I have a long way to go, but just as long a way back. If I press on, at least I should meet up with pavement when I get to Foresthill. I decide I should forge ahead towards pavement, rather than go back over difficult trails.

The trail gets harder. The air is thin and there's a lot of uphill gravel. There is a slippery, fine ash that covers the trail. The back wheel keeps spinning up, but now it sinks the tire & I have to dig it out. The front wheel can't turn without sliding. I have to plan my turns waay in advance, but I can't read the terrain well. I check the odometer and can see that I am averaging less than 10 miles an hour because I have to keep slowing, stopping, and push the bike out of ruts when it gets stuck.
The sun goes down in 1 hour, and I'm still on the dirt trail. I think I'll have to ride the trail in the dirt. I get a brief moment of hope when I see this sign.

I am terribly aware (now) of how the R1 is the wrong bike to bring on this ride. But, I can't turn around and I have no water or shelter. Deer and wildlife start to make themselves known. I start to think about bears and mountain lions. And why isn't there any running streams? Just stagnant ponds filled with mosquitos. I press onward but it's about to get dark. Hopefully the trail eases up.

F*#$k!!! The trail doesn’t get easier! It gets worse! Way worse with each mile! Now I'm stuck in a foot of powdery ash uphill. I have to dig myself out, but the dust is so thick, I don't even need a kickstand to hold the bike up. I clear the tires & prep them with twigs and rocks to try and get traction. No luck. How do you get a bike uphill when the tires don't grip and the bike is sinking like quicksand? Oh, if only I had knobbies or even "dual sport" tires, this would be a snap. Instead I waste half an hour trying to get up through a dry stream & this stupid hill!

I'm able to get the bike through that obstacle, but each time I clear an obstacle, I'm more tired. I can barely walk now so how can I keep manhandling the bike out of being stuck? But, if I take a break to rest, that means more riding trails in the dark.
The trail so far turns out to be the "good" part. I finally get to the intersection of Soda Springs & Forresthill, but there are several forks and nothing's marked. I hike around for a bit to find that all directions look bad and the road is getting more beat up. I choose the correct route, but it's a winding uphill trail that's filled with gravel. Gravel! Dammit!! I thought that weird dust that feels like riding on sand was bad enough. Gravel sinks, tips and tries to drop the bike unpredictably. I have no choice but to press on. I don't have the energy to backtrack. But, the steep hills & gravel mean I'd be better off walking the trail – but what to do about this 400 lbs of "luggage"? I push, ride, dig, and just keep trying. The camera battery low and so is the sun. I ride for an hour in the dark; in the dirt.
I haven't had cell reception for at least 15 miles (if ever). This was a bad idea, but I have no choice but to move on. I start to realize that a mechanical breakdown of any kind would leave me stranded.

I continue on in the dark making terribly poor time. It was hard to ride this bike in full sun. In the dark and with the trail filled with loose gravel and sand, I'm practically walking the bike forward.
Suddenly, something reflects the light of my headlights. When I get there, it's a sign. Better yet, it's pavement!! F*$@k! 25 miles of dirt? It felt like 50! Oh, wait, 27 miles to Soda Springs. Soda Springs was another 20 miles of dirt!
In a dualsport this might have been "fun," but on this bike it was not worth it at all! It's about 10:30 now and the sign says it's 27 miles before I'm back on Hwy 80. Plus, it’s a few hours more on Hwy 80 to get back home.
The paved part of Forresthill is better than hwy 9. I wish I could see (it's pitch black). I also wish I could move! This road looks so sweet if only I had the energy to ride it well.

A cool sign on the way back. A trail bike would've been a great bike for this road.
I ride the rest of the way on pavement. Glorious pavement! I keep flashing back to the part in the movie "long way around" where the guys are so happy to be on pavement that they look like they want to kiss it. I know exactly how they felt! I DID want to kiss the pavement (but I didn’t, honest!). I later learned that this road is a total speed trap. The patron saint of dumb luck was on my side today because I got through this ordeal unscathed and un-ticketed! Lesson learned (I hope!).
Those real "adventure riders" are something else. They rate this road as "easy." But, that's with knobbies! And knobbies are for... ;) j/k!
Hope you enjoyed the pics! That all folks!
PS, I made it out alive!

Yeah, very low tire pressure would've been a good idea. I had it at 28 psi front & rear because I didn't have a way to re-inflate them for the 27 miles of paved twisties on ForrestHill. If I was thinking ahead, I would'be brought a small bike pump -- but if I was thinking, I wouldn't have done this in the first place. :p

living close by for at least 2/3's of my life helped as well...
There are many summer time cabins there, to this day and a main lodge.
a great natural mineral spring there as well, Maybe why just on the other side of that slope is SodaSprings...
You do or should have permission to camp over night thou,
so is not to be rude.
The ridge you came over to get to that spot is at the edge of two really cool trails, one , the "granite chief wilderness area" where the Pacific crest trail runs through and right in the middle of that and at the top of the ridge you came down is a trailhead call "teviscup trail" a great two day backpacking trip for any one interested.

buahahhaa! we musta just missed each other, dude, cause i was headed the other direction (going towards soda springs) at around 5pm ish when i got to the intersection of robinson flat rd and soda springs rd. i'd come in from french meadows resevoir (it's twice as long as going to foresthill rd).
it was pretty gnarly, so i feel yer "pain." :laughing i almost pitched it away twice in that silt...in fact, that spot where you took the pic of the R1 sitting at the bottom of that hill, i almost munched it coming down that when the front sank into about 8" of silt and cranked to the steering stop....at about 25mph. :laughing

Com3: Wow, what a coincidence to be around that same place around the same time. Maybe you were there Sunday, though? I was there Saturday. Surprised we didn't see each other (I was going really slow).
Now that I tried it, I really I dunno how you do it on a streetbike w/street tires. I'm gonna wimp out & get a dualsport someday.

amazing story. I haven't really wanted to go out and buy a bike with knobbies until I read your story.

oh, yeah, yeah, i was through there on sunday, no sat. my bad.
it's all about practice. :D that's all. though, i have pitched it away twice in the dirt in the ~3000+ miles of dirt on street tire experience... both at decent speeds (once about 25mph, hard on the brakes. the other about 40, hard on the gas). the bike was uninjured both times...i...on the other hand... :laughing

Hey Joe~ Yep, we met at a few of the Zoom Zoom track days. Too bad I don't have my 4theriders CD on me, but here's a recent one from the Z2 6/26/07 track day:

Thanks for the link to your post! Wow, I feel better knowing that even you got tired and it took a couple hours even for you. Can't believe I was right next to those tunnels and didn't happen to see them! I had no idea those were right there!

Latecomer to this thread, but wow! Looks like some pretty sweet adventures! jealous I didn't get to go too! My adventures don't usually involve 2 wheels though, mine are usually with 8 wheels and 4 hooves. (truck/trailer/horse). But I have made some fun cross country roadtrips to the east coast and back. Nothing nearly as awesome as this though! Props to you!

Not the last... cause now you made me see it.
Redline, I bet you would have made it home before dark if you didn't stop 300 times to take photos! But, you did anyway, why? To make a BARF thread! Talk about loyalty!!!! Puts the pleasure of BARF readers ahead of his own safety!!

Yeah, very low tire pressure would've been a good idea. I had it at 28 psi front & rear because I didn't have a way to re-inflate them
Now that was an EPIC ride :ride :cool
You would have been fine if you had one of these :teeth

DancingQueen: Thanks! Oh, now if I could've borrowed your horse, this trail would've been easy. Oh, wait, I dunno how to ride a horse!
antarius: Glad you liked the pics! I'm glad I took the pictures. By the time I got home, I thought it was all a bad dream or maybe hallucinations from the fatigue.
pashnit: Hey, thanks for reading my thread! You've been all over! Glad you enjoyed reading about my little trip.
navy8ret: Tools!! Now that would've been a GREAT idea! I'll be much more prepared next time I do something like this. Thanks for hint on the tool set. I'll have to pick me up that stuff! Oh, and I see it's Com3 approved! That means it can stand up to more abuse than I could ever dish out on a bike ride!
pacifisticuffs: Thanks for reading my thread! It was rough up there (for me, anyway)!
i just reread this thread...i laughed just as hard this time as i did the first time. i can't believe you had to use rocks and twigs and shit to get up that hill. :laughing :laughing

I'm late to this thread, but enjoyed the read just the same. I did the exact same thing in 1991 on an 88 Honda Hawk. It got dark, I was lost and terrified that I would run out of gas. I eventually ran across some ATV folks that pointed me in the right direction. It was quite an adventure!
I went back through in my truck in 99 going the other way but didn't stop to explore anything. I'll have to head back up this summer to poke around near the bridge.
Did you ever get all of the dirt off of your R1? :rofl That poor Hawk was a FILTHY beast after I went through there...
