ok, i got a playbike, XR100, i'm pretty stoked, i was wondering what it takes to get a plate on it... my understanding is that i need...
- stator... anyone localy rewire these? or should i just send it to Baja Designs
- headlight... does this need to be DOT approved?
- turn signals... i was planing on using the stock ones off my R6.
- switch for lights/signals... gonna find one on ebay, probaby off a wrecked sportbike.
- tail light/brakelight... havent decided yet... does there have to be a brake switch on the front and rear brake?
- battery... i'll be looking for the smallest possible to power the tailight for 20 min.
- tires... do they have to be DOT?
- horn... does it have to be electric? can i use one of those squeze bulb bicycle horns?
- pass mirror... ok, easy enough

is there anything i'm missing?

it's not like i want to do a full bore dual sport conversion, all i really want is my XR100 with a headlight and a plate, so i can ride to the trails and just mess around in my neighborhood. i'll do whatever else to get the plate, but once i get the plate, the signals, horn, and mirror will disapear.

so once i get the bike done, does the DMV inspect it? how much can i expect to shell out at the DMV?

ok, and i need to insure it, [sarcasm]wow, that's gonna be expensive[/sarcism]

damn, that's an interesting idea. I guess it would be in the same class as a scooter (not freeway legal).

seems like your not the only one to go down this path (http://groups.google.com/groups?client=googlet&q=street%20legal%20xr100)

if you go ahead and do it, please post pictures.

Jeff,

Baja Designs makes a dual sport kit (http://www.bajadesigns.com/sitebody/dsk/info.asp) that contains most of what you need.
The XR 100 is listed in the application chart. Regarding the coil, I had one from
E-Line (http://www.elineaccessories.com/electrical.html) on my YZ400F. Unfortunately, they do not seem to have one for the XR100.
Another manufacturer of dual purpose kits is Electrex (http://www.electrexusa.com/electrex_dakar_2003.html).

Here is an interesting review (http://www.all-offroad.com/DirtBikes/Hardware/Reviews/DSLightingKit01.html) as well as this page (http://home.attbi.com/~pgailunas/stator.html)

thanks for the link to the roll your own starter. might just have to try that.
i dont want to buy a dual sport kit from baja designs because i'd be paying for a headlight i dont like and turn signals and mirors and a horn that i wont use for more than a day.
i really like this light...

but it isnt DOT aproved, will i have a problem with that?
also, take into account i am a broke 19 year old, and i love building stuff, a bolt on project isnt nearly as much fun.

I wish I was broke with a R6 and a brand new XR100 when I was 19!!! I had to wait until I was 33 years old to get my very FIRST motorcycle!!! :wow

haha, ok, before you brand me as a full on spoiled brat... i work 4 days a week and go to school 5 days a week, its not like my parents just buy all my toys for me. but i am lucky enough to have parents that do suport me quite well, allowing me to spend my paychecks on things with motors :D

Electrex is a shady company, be careful when dealing with them. They have a 1 year warranty but don't honor it. I sent my bad RR to them over a month ago and they are still giving me excuses as to why I don't have a replacement yet.
