I purchased a Turbo City Borrego Rack over the summer for my DR-Z. Due to a lot of things coming up, I never got around to actually putting it on. When I finally went to do so, after the move, I found that the mounting points are a good distance from the seat bolts. I sent a note to Nate at New Enough to ask if I'm missing some parts. Response:
The Borrego Rack fitment is noted in the drop down menu as fitting the
DRZ 400 only:

The DRZ 400S has a different sub frame so it will not work.
I thought that "DR-Z400" meant E, S, and SM. Is there such a thing as a non-final-lettered DR-Z400? If he means the E, is it really different in the rear?
This is all more to satisfy my curiosity than anything else. I'm still thinking it might be worth it to fab up some spacers and get longer bolts.

Sounds like a good www.thumpertalk.com question.
There are differences between models of the same bike, that should clear things up. :laughing
Seriously, you can probably find someone on ttalk that has been in the same situation and has posted pics on how to fix it, ttalk is massive.

According to the microfiche on Ron Ayers, the 400 and 400E (http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/300_0374/frame/frame.cfm?man=su&groupid=1590&parent=1540) have a different rear fender/frame whatever-it's-called than the 400S/SM (http://www.ronayers.co).
Can't you return/exchange the rack?

From what I've seen, all the obvious stuff has been the same on the "S" and the "SM".

I have an E and SM. Yes they are different. LMK if you want pics of the 2.

I really just want to know for my own curiosity. I know there's an E, K, S, and SM, but if there's a non-letter that's different from the rest, I want to know that, too. If there isn't, I want to toss him a suggestion to make the drop-down list clearer. ;)
11/10... guh, too much to do... :(

Well, Ron Ayers shows microfiche for a DRZ400, a DRZ400E and then a DRZ400S.
Anyway I posed your question to Jesse Kientz, who seems to be a bona fide dirt bike guru, and his reply was:
"[T]he DRZ400 is only a kick start model but very dirt worthy as it has a lighter flywheel, which has quicker throttle response, than the E model, which has the electric start mechanism, battery and charging system extra weight to carry. Other than this they are pretty much the same."
