I know a few PMs are circulating with regards to possible relay teams for next year. Enough people seemed interested that I figured it was worthy of its own thread :)
There are at least a few of us: I know Roxy / zx6roxy did a few events before injuries slowed her down last year, and Joel / Atak Kat has a couple of big events on his schedule schedule for 2008. (Former?) AFM fast guy Jeff Tigert is new to the scene but already killin' it, placing 15th or so in his age group at the Santa Cruz Sentinel Olympic Distance tri and running a 1:29 Half Marathon this past weekend.
I've really enjoyed pushing and testing myself in triathlon after taking a step back from motorcycle racing, and I know I'm not the only one. If you're thinking of giving it a go, or just looking someone to run / swim / bike with, let's hear from ya!

Or you could just be like me - let everyone go in the swim, get a bunch of em back on the bike, and watch em sail away one final time on the run :)

You might be surprised at what you're capable of if you work at it. Before last year, I hadn't swam in over 20 years, and never ran more than 4 miles. I've done three Half Ironman triathlons since then!

My main events for next year (barring no conflicts with AFM events):
- Napa Marathon
- Wildflower Long Course (still have a credit from last year)
- Big Kahuna
- The Downieville Classic
In addition to those, I might also do an Xterra off-road tri, but nothing is set in stone. Since I have an AFM event every month between March and October, there's a good chance a schedule conflict will prevent me from running at least 1/4 of the events I'd like to enter.
It's one thing to stay active, but another thing entirely to have a goal to train for. Triathlon and multisport events have given me plenty of goals!

Damn shin splints :(
I feel half crippled after playing a doubleheader in baseball or an hour long indoor soccer match.
I'd love to do something like this, but (literally) running even a mile causes pain to the point of barely being able to walk.

Here are my goals for next year:
-Napa Valley Marathon (first marathon)
-San Jose International Triathlon (Olympic distance)
-Alcatraz swim (2nd crossing)
EDIT: an Xterra off road tri sounds fun!

I'm starting to increase the distance of my long runs.
Next week I will start swimming again.

I trained for my first marathon with a broken left tibia and horrible shinsplints that I had suffered with my entire life. I took a class on Chi Running (half day seminar), and it changed everything. I still follow what I think are the principles behind it that help me, but a lot of it might be a bit over the top. The whole concept behind it is to "run without using your legs".
Look it up and get the book and/or the dvd, taking the class is probably much better, as you get someone working with you on body mechanics. After you get some info on it, I'd be happy to meet up with you and show you the techniques I still apply that my help you. It takes a couple of weeks to really get used to it, but it really helps.

And Bap I've still got the letter granting us access into next years Muddy Buddy. Hopefully I can attend it this time but I will definitely give you more notice this time if my surgery will conflict. Shin splints kept me out of this years Muddy Buddy but I've more ot less dealt with it via really exspensive shoes and my own sort of shadetree chi running technique though I still have minor issues if I push to hard. I'm up to about 3 miles now and could probably go further if pushed. I am really interested with the Chi running course. If one is scheduled out here again then I'm a definite.

I did a few sprint triathlons last year & Xterra this year. I've been off the training wagon for 8 months (work & laziness) but I just started training again last week - I'll be very interested to keep up with this thread!
2008 Goals (if they don't conflict with SMUSA)
Xterra
at least 1 10K
Granite Bay Triathlon
Golden State Triathlon
2009
Olympic Distance
Thanks for the added inspiration!

Mike's Bikes is a good chain shop over on University, but Performance Bicycle Shop near REI in Berkeley is hard to beat as far as prices go. Looking at the website, their shoes start around $50.
I've never used their house brand shoes, but Heather / DucatiHoney uses hers for roadbiking. She hasn't said anything bad about them yet!

I did the Granite Bay Xterra. It was by far the toughest event I've done. TBF racing puts on Mountain Bike Duathlons before the event - so you can practice a very similar course. There were lots of hills, sand pits, mud and mostly smooth trails with a few technical rock sections that are not too difficult.
The swim was intense! Swimming is (actually was) my strong point - so I try to start up front. For Xterra it is a mass start. So 400+ people hit the water at the same time - lots of kicking, scratching, hitting, people swimming over people & others trying to grab your foot to pull themselves forward! It was fun!
The run was hilly - but I had nothing left after the bike. I like my tri bike on the road course better!
Any recomendations for an Olympic distance - the Wildflower looks fun.

Thanks for the info - we'll probably give that a try! While trail riding is my strong point, my girlfriend is still pretty new to it - the more practice she can get on terrain similar to the course itself, the better.

Wildflower is fun, but tough! I had a lot of fun doing the Santa Cruz Sentinel international distance tri this year - the run course was flat, the bike was mostly flat with a few rollers, while the course itself was super scenic!

For anyone that's even the slightest bit interested in triathlons, volunteering at an event is the best way to get a front row seat and be right in the middle of all the action without breaking a sweat.
Volunteering can include:
- body marking (writing race numbers on athelete's bodies)
- directing traffic in the transition areas
- handing out food/gels/water bottles at aid stations
The Treasure Island Tri is this Saturday and they're looking for volunteers:

I used to get shin splints but it was because I was putting too much weight on the balls & outside edge of my feet when I ran. I now run with better form and never had shin splints again. Quit running like a ballerina and see if that helps any. :twofinger

I had to start running like a ballerina to get rid of my shin splints! I was running heels first & was killing my legs, I also sounded like a miniature Clydesdale! I read Running for Triathletes and started doing the evolution running thing & it helped a lot. My sprints are way faster too!

Mikev, please continue running like a ballerina. :teeth :later
Mike Solis, are there any dates for the events that you've mentioned? It would help to have a preliminary timeframe for how long folks have to train.
Also I've always wondered if there is such a thing as a footrace on local trails or in hilly areas, like a hare scramble for runners. That seems more fun to me than just hoofing it on pavement for 10K.
Rebecca

Not sure the ballerina thing is correct - it just helped me!:teeth I'm still pathetically slow on the run leg! At the Stanford Tri I was 3rd on the swim, fifth on the bike & 12th on the run! I just probably would have walked if I hadn't changed my running style. I was amazed when I started reading that there are lots of ways to run - I never really thought of it before!
TBF does a cross country run at the same time or before the mountain bike duathlons. It's not the Bay Area, but Granite Bay is nice and TBF puts on very well run events.

"Tri-California Events is aware of the oil spill affecting the San Francisco Bay . At this time, the San Francisco Police Department and Water Safety have determined that there is no oil in or around Pirates Cove, Treasure Island where the swim portion of the race will take place. At this time, we have approval to swim in Pirates Cove. Please continue check the website for updated information. But I do love to swim and have coached swimming and swam competitively at the international level so if anyone wants a fast swim partner or coach, hit me up. I've actually been toying with the idea of starting a swimming instruction service aimed at tri-athletes as traditionally, swimming is almost everyone's weakest leg. If that sounds interesting to anyone let me know and since I'm still in the planning stages, a steep discount will apply.

If it is more convenient, there is ample parking at Grass Valley & Skyline trailhead, 1.5 mile south of starting point. Taking Goldenrod Trail south to Bass Cove Trail, by the dam, and West Shore Trail to the Marina. Approx. 6.5 miles out (13 total)

I hate you Mike. Sonny and I ended up doing the entire loop at Lake Chabot in the counterclockwise direction. All told, 16.5 miles or so of what seemed like insignificant downhills and crazy hills all the damn way. By the time we got back to the trailhead by my house, on the last insignificant climb, both freaking quads cramped up at once. If this is the easy stuff, I'm gonna need a year of the easy stuff to even think of anything tougher. :cry
Sonny, I hate you, you made every climb look easy, and I know you almost never work out. :mad
At least we beat the rain. I hope you guys were as fortunate and had a great day.

Bap, if you can handle that loop, you're in pretty good shape! I'm impressed - it took me some time to build up to the full counterclockwise loop :)
We had a good ride out at China Camp today - hope you make it out for the next one! It was me, Lisa, Cody (Yody), Cody's buddy Hayden, Everett (Ducky Fresh), Michelle, and Michelle. With a bike mechanic, a personal trainer, a physical therapist, and a massage therapist all along for our ride today, I think we were in good hands if anyone had any problems!
It started raining about halfway through the ride, but the tree cover kept it from being too bad in most places. It was Everett's first mtb ride, he was railing around on my lightweight XC (backup) bike - I think he was diggin the downhill :)
It was a wet, muddy mess afterwards, but I think everyone had a great time!

A couple of weeks ago, Elaine (smallnfast) came with Lisa and I for a lap of China Camp. At one point during the ride, Elaine was showing off her old BMX skills while Lisa pitched it trying to do a wheelie.
The loop is about 8-9 miles long with about 90% singletrack, a lot of which swoops through the hills on some fun, long, descents that aren't too technical or challenging.

I wouldn't say I "handled" it. More like I got my ass handed to ME. I tried every hill, but ended up walking parts of many. As soon as I can stay in teh saddle the entire loop, I'll let you know. ;)
Sonny and I are seriously considering setting up a mini tri up around here, although my ability to compete before year's end is quite questionable. I need to develop some cycling legs :p

Mike Solis, are there any dates for the events that you've mentioned? It would help to have a preliminary timeframe for how long folks have to train.
Many of the schedules aren't out yet, but here's what I've got:
Running
- Napa Marathon (March 2)
Mountain Biking
- Downieville Classic (July 11-13)
Triathlon
- Wildflower Long Course (May 2-4)
- Big Kahuna (beginning of September)
- Santa Cruz Sentinel (end of September)
Also I've always wondered if there is such a thing as a footrace on local trails or in hilly areas, like a hare scramble for runners. That seems more fun to me than just hoofing it on pavement for 10K.
On the Xterra site, there are plenty of trail runs if that's what you're interested in!
Riding in the mud=fun :) good times!
BTW can't wait for next week, just got a new front shock and a set of wheels put on :Party:Party

When I was with Team in Training, we actually did a practice tri out at Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton. After a couple of laps of the swimming area in the lake, we got on our bikes and did a couple of laps of the area (Stanley to Isabel to Vineyard to Bernal and back). The run was done on the dirt trails out at Shadow Cliffs.
The problem is that is the water temp - people probably gonna need wetsuits at this time of year. Or were you thinking of doing it at a pool?
I don't really enjoy running but I do like the occasional bike ride but can't do a century or anything like that maybe 1/2 or 1/3.
Do I have to put my head in the water??:cry:teeth

I'm actually keeping the red one - with a little less travel and weight than my green bike, I'll probably be using it for Xterra off road triathlons next year. Maybe a few cross country mountain bike races too.
On the other hand, this bad boy is for sale. It's practically brand new - retails for $2800, I've ridden it less than 10 times. 6" travel front and rear, 31 lbs in it's current state - I was hoping to get $2100 for it:

While I'm still reading the book, my posture goes to crap when I try to run light on my feet, and my ankles start getting sore a few miles into any run at a decent pace. I actually had a blast and had my best run. Maybe I should stick to duathlons instead. :-)
The race start was interesting. They had us lined up in front of the timing mat outside the transition area. No shoes & socks just like we came out of the water. Clock started counting once we crossed the timing mat into transition to get our bikes.
The bike course still sucks. The bumps, cracks, potholes, and a little gravel made for an interesting bike ride. I saw a couple of cyclists on the ground and hauled away in ambulances. Either they hit the curb (it was narrow in a few places) or they bumped each other. I also saw a few people on the run with road rash on their shoulder.
The run course was 'ok'. completely flat but it was 3 loops this year versus 2 last year.
Overall, it was still a challenging race without the swim. Yeah, I'll probably do it again next year. :)

I couldn't believe the carnage on the bike course. It seemed like I saw people down almost every lap. Knowing those bike course challenges, but not having actual course road time, I took a gamble on riding the road bike vs. tri bike thinking the course demanded more bike handling skills. Turns out I didn't even need to brake for much and the lack of aero bars killed my time. Plus the symptoms of a cold during the week really killed my power, so what was suppossed to be a great end to my first year as a trialthlete ended in dissapointment, but every race you learn more and I will be better prepared for next year. Hope to see you guys this winter for some off season training.

My 2007 Santa Cruz Sentinel Race Report
The short version
My girlfriend Lisa kicked my ass in our first triathlon together, and won our side bet - a Fenton's Black and Tan ice cream sundae.
The long version
There actually almost wasn't a long version. The first rain of the season fell on Saturday morning, making Highway 17 extra slick. Slick enough for a car in front of me to spin out in a curve, sending my truck sliding into the center divide as my wheels instantly locked. Somehow, we escaped without a scratch - only the tires and hubcaps rubbed on the concrete divider! We made it the rest of the way to Santa Cruz without incident, picked up our packets, and headed to our hotel for the evening.
My swim wave was scheduled to start at 8:05 while Lisa's was at 8:15, effectively giving me a 10 minute head start into the water. We figured she'd be about 10 minutes faster than me in the swim, putting us into the T1 transition area around the same time. Unfortunately, the race looked a little uncertain at that point, as Lisa's leg was still bothering her after our motorcycle ride a week earlier, making her unsure as to whether she could finish the race. She figured she'd do the swim, and play the rest by ear.
Before long, the horn sounded, and I was off in the cold Monterey Bay water, on a mission to swim around the wharf as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, the swim took me 5 minutes longer than I had hoped, as I emerged from the water at the 40 minute mark. As I reached the transition area, Lisa was nowhere to be found - I guessed that she had a 5 minute head start on me on the bike course. I pulled my wetsuit off, threw my gear on, and was on my way.
Swim - 0.9 miles
Mike: 41:25 swim + 4:44 T1
Lisa: 26.35 swim + 5:13 T1
I got a little carried away at the start of the bike leg, passing dozens of people in the first few miles. After about 10 minutes, I checked my Garmin to see an average speed of almost 24 mph, with a heart rate of 188 bpm - not good. I clicked down a few notches to avoid certain self destruction, averaging just over 21 mph to the turn-around point in Davenport, just over 12 miles from the start.
I saw Lisa ahead of me at around Mile 14, and made sure to build up some speed to make the pass just that much more "special". Out of the seat, mashing on the pedals, I yelled out "GO BABE" as I zipped past. But with a light headwind, I struggled to hold the same pace on the return trip. I brought it home in conservation mode, mustering up just enough energy to charge past a few more groups just before the transition area. I knew it was a bad idea from a strategy standpoint, but I couldn't help myself - soon after dismounting, I parked my bike and was off on the run.
Bike - 24.8 mi
Mike: 1:11:45 (20.7 mph avg) + 1:39 T2
Lisa: 1:17:32 (19.1 mph avg) + 1:51 T2
I focused on keeping my run as effortless as possible, holding a 9:30 / mile pace for the first couple of miles. I figured I was only 2-3 minutes ahead of Lisa into the transition area, and was pretty much doomed to lose our little bet barring some sort of catastrophe.
By mile 2, I looked back to see her just a few steps behind, giggling as she tried to sneak up on me. We ran together for a few seconds, but I knew it wasn't going to happen. I guessed she was doing an 8:30 / mile pace, which was was at least 1:00 / mile faster than what I could manage. My best recorded pace in a 10K was 8:49 minutes / mile - and that was without a bike or a swim preceding it.
I clicked into conservation mode as she pulled away, as my pace floated just below 10:00 minutes / mile. I thought about speeding up to keep her in sight, but my legs weren't having it. I didn't feel like my run pace was horrendously slow, but I remember passing only one person on the course the whole time - and he was walking. Before the event, I figured my size was holding me back from excelling on the run, but runners of all shapes and sizes seemed to lumber past me during the race. It didn't bother me, but it did give me something to think about.
After an hour of running along six miles of scenic Santa Cruz coastline, I made it back to the transition area and crossed the line.
Run - 6.2 miles
Mike: 1:01:58 (9:59 / mile avg)
Lisa: 0:52:56 (8:32 / mile avg)
I found Lisa shortly after handing in my timing chip, and proceeded to bump into a number of other people. Old Team in Training teammates, fellow Golden Gate Triathlon Club members, even my neighbor up in Albany!
Even though I got my ass kicked by over 15 minutes, I had a fantastic time. I was stoked at being able to hold over 20 mph on the bike leg, keeping my run under 10:00 / mile, and just being out such a beautiful course. Lisa was stoked to not only finish the race, but to be able to run faster and farther than she had in years. It didn't have the epic feel of the Half Ironman events that I've entered, but I can easily say it was the one of most fun events I've done yet.
That being said, I'm looking forward to the next one. But if another ice cream sundae is on the line, I'm demanding a 10 minute handicap :)
Total Time
Mike: 3:01:21 (78th in age group, 629th overall)
Lisa: 2:44:07 (15th in age group, 393rd overall)

I would most certainly be interested in an early morning china camp ride.
Jer, if you can't make China Camp, take BART to my house, we can do a loop in my neighborhood. I'll pick you up at BART.
If I go to China Camp, I may be able to pick you and the bike up. I'll try to get a bike rack so we don't have to throw both bikes in the back of my tiny little car.
If we need to coordinate, cell phone would be best. I'll be on and off (mostly off) the computer tonight and tomorrow.

Excellent. I've attached a satellite map of the location below. You can also put the following coordinates into Google Maps:
38.009182,-122.494597
Getting there is easy enough - it's the San Pedro Road exit off of 101, just north of Central San Rafael. The exit is right around where the highway crests the hill. Once you exit, keep heading east - parking is on the edge of San Pedro Road, just past the Kiosk / access road to the campgrounds on the right.
In other multisport news, Lisa and I just got back from the San Jose 10K Turkey Trot. I did a 55:00, averaging 8:43 miles with a 181 average heart rate. Lisa handed me my ass once again, crossing the line almost 5 minutes ahead of me.
Hope everyone is having a good Thanksgiving!

The way I see it, all my entry fees for next year combined don't cost as much as an average roadracing weekend. Somehow, that makes it seem acceptable...

Yumi and I are still a go for this and I'm sure we'd be willing to cough up for the Jersey as well.
If anyone is interested Yumi and I have scheduled a number of 5k and possibly 10k marathons that will be happening in the city over the coming months. Maybe 1 or 2 tri/duathlons (I can't swin correctly so it's run bike run for me) as well. We are still new top this and are slowly gonna work our way up to a half and a full marathon by the end of this year, beggining of next year. Maybe sooner if we feel up to it.
I will post up at least a week in advance which, when, and where the events will be taking place (none till feb). Most of the events we have picked are split 10k and 5k runs.

The 'masters' team is a term used for a post-collegiate competitive swimming team.
By the way, Ev. Since you're still in the South Bay, I highly recommend that you check into joining up with the folks in the Silicon Valley Tri Club: http://svtriclub.org/ They're having an open-house on January 14th. They're a great group, and they give away free schwag every meeting. The year I trained with them, I got a couple free pair for Rudy Project sun glasses.
But, I think that the main advantage of joining them is getting free swim coaching at the Santa Clara Swim center. http://www.santaclaraswimclub.org/ That's a great pool where you get anywhere from tools like me who can barely swim 50 meters to Olympic medalist swimmers.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think there's a difference between a masters team versus a masters swim.
My gym has masters swim classes, but it's not at all competitive. It's a an hour long swim program where a swim coach puts up swim drills of various distances. We may start of with a 400' warmup (freestyle), a 1500-2000' main set (pull, kick, freestyle), and then a cool down. Everyone goes at their own pace and it's no big deal if you can't finish all the drills in the hour. I'll continue working on the drills even after the class has finished.
Any level swimmer can participate and it's a great way to get some tips from a swim coach.

The Stanford tri team is hosting its annual "Treeathlon" on March 2, in Redwood city. The swim is a short 500m out-and-back in the bay, and the 20k bike and 5k run are really flat and easy.
It's the main fundraiser for the stanford tri team, and is open to everyone. I am not allowed to race in it because I have to help run the thing, but I think it would be cool if some BARF people showed up. :) It's a pretty fun and easy course, good for first-time triathletes.

Wet suits really, really, really hamper your ability to swim. Unless you really suck at swimming, suck it up and practice before resorting to a wet suit. And freezing to death in cold water, :hand please...I've done alcatraz in 47 degrees on newyears day w/out a wet suit. Its 99% in your head.

I need to see you swim before I can make any valid recommendations. The one thing I can say for sure is don't do too many repeats with poor form. All you do is reinforce poor form on your muscle memory. I've got tons of drills to mix in with a workout. Wanna try to get together this weekend at a pool?

Ya know, I think I probably know a significant amount more about swimming than you do so I stand by my statement and repeat it. Wetsuits hinder your ability to swim well. They are a crutch for people to use who won't put in the time to learn how to swim better.

It is concluded that the wet suit effect improves performance more in inefficient swimmers with low buoyancy, swimming at low speeds
Yup. That's me! :laughing

How critical is it to have your arms covered?
It's a personal preference.
Some prefer sleeveless so the range of motion in their stroke isn't limited and still benefit from the additional buoyancy and temperature 'protection' of a wetsuit.
And yeah, I pee in my wetsuit. Instant warmth! :teeth

Wetsuits hinder your ability to swim well. They are a crutch for people to use who won't put in the time to learn how to swim better.
+1
Swimming with a wetsuit is sorta cheating. You're naturally buoyant without much effort, and if one chooses to, they can get "lazy" with their technique and still get by on the swim.
Perhaps only novice or unskilled swimmers get more of a boost from the suits than topnotch swimmers, who have already streamlined themselves and have optimised their movements by upgrading the skill of their strokes and kicks.

The way I look at it, swimming with a wetsuit is no different than riding with an aero bike. They both help, and they're both allowed.

Everett's article was pretty neat. Swimmers were 1.5 seconds slower on a 400 using a wetsuit, while triathletes were 19 seconds faster? Seems to agree with everything said here so far.
Looks like Napa is out for me. According to my training schedule, I should be peaking in my mileage right now. Instead, I'm coming off of a couple of different colds I picked up, struggling at a slower pace on my "easy" runs. I think I'll be using a half marathon to prepare for the SOMA Half Ironman later this year, and hopefully using Napa next year to prepare for Coeur d'Alene (if I get a slot).

I was considering doing that, but a 6 hour marathon where I end up walking multiple times wouldn't do anything for my confidence or fitness.
For November / December, I tried to stick to the following schedule:
Mon: Rest
Tues: Easy Run (4-5 miles)
Wed: Swim
Thurs: Run Intervals @ Piedmont
Fri: Swim
Sat / Sun: Long run (7-8 miles) / MTB ride
Towards the end of December, I realized I had just over two months instead of three, so I made a mileage-based training program based on the Marathon for Slackers guide and the runnersworld.com site. I attempted to ramp up to 11 miles, exceeding the "10% increase per week" rule while also recovering from a light cold. Didn't go so well, and my health plummeted from whatever cold / flu bug has been going around.
It's been a few weeks, and I'm still not 100%. I'll be happy focusing on Wildflower in the meantime - Xterra and a possible downhill mountain bike race in February should be lots of fun too :)

I'm a bit behind myself for the Rock & Roll in San Diego. (June 1st) I figure that if I'm gonna be slow, I might as well have some fun with it. I decided to buy a little lycra Elvis jumpsuit and be a Running Elvis.

Mike, you gotta do your long runs as a slow easy run, don't worry about time, don't worry too much about HR, just finish the distance. They're more for acclimating your body to running for longer periods of time and longer distances than anything else. You should not feel completely worn out after your long runs. I you feel you could go a few more miles after you reach your distance, you're perfectly fine.

I still think that speed work at the track is the fastest way to hurt yourself. I flat refuse to do it now. I think you can get the same results from hill repeats, tempo runs, or fartleks.

Good advice though, I'll do my best keep it in mind next time I do a longer run.
After that long run, my calves were in terrible shape - I was pretty much going at a brisk walking pace the whole time, and had to stop twice to stretch them out. Whatever cold / flu bug is going around has left me feeling pretty flat - that 11 miler hurt.
Right now, my body is saying "rest" when my program is saying "step it up", and I've got to go by what my body says.

No argument there. My schedule is why I go to the track - I'm off work at 7, and the track I go to is lit til 9 with a synthetic surface. I've been trying to incorporate aspects of the Yasso 800 workout into my program, running intervals at a mellow pace to prepare my body for my target marathon pace.

I need to see you swim before I can make any valid recommendations. The one thing I can say for sure is don't do too many repeats with poor form. All you do is reinforce poor form on your muscle memory. I've got tons of drills to mix in with a workout. Wanna try to get together this weekend at a pool?

I just swam at the San Ramon Swim Center last night. Open til 8:30, over 20 lanes, and $2 less than the El Cerrito pool I normally go to (which is also really nice)!

If you can make it out for a session with Bill, I'm 100% confident it'll be more than worth your while. I was getting swim help from a few different triathlon coaches when I was training for my Wildflower two years ago, my first ever tri. I think I learned more in my first session with Bill than I have during all of my other supervised / coached swim sessions combined!
He observed my stroke from multiple angles, pointed out the deficiencies he saw, and prescribed drills that would address those deficiencies, with very detailed explanations as to how they would help. For me, as a very new swimmer, the difference was both dramatic and immediate.

I felt a pop while I was having a coughing fit and thought I broke/cracked a rib. It felt like I imagine being stabbed would feel like. Anyway, lidocaine patches and prescription meds = no running.

OMG I'm sorry :| That happened to me 2 years ago. It was so freaking painful. At one point I sneezed while waiting at a traffic light and it was so sore I instinctively shouted out a series of my foulest words. Then I turned to the right to see a school bus full of open mouthed children staring at me. :wow
