To answer this question, as long as the bike is all 50 states legal, your good. And yes this bike is legal for registration in CA. I called the dealer where he bought it from to confirm this.

Not so sure about that one.. If the bike is currently registered and purchased in NV, you will need 7500 miles to sell it here in CA.

From CA. DMV website:
What You Need to Know Before Buying a Vehicle from Out-of-State
The Bottom Line
If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws in order to be registered here.
What Is Considered a New Vehicle?
California law considers any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer when acquired by a California resident or business to be a new vehicle. This holds true whether or not the vehicle has been registered in another state. If you acquire a new vehicle from another state, you may not subsequently drive it to accumulate over 7,500 miles to circumvent the law. DMV cannot accept an application to register the vehicle, and you cannot register or operate the vehicle in California.
Aren't All Vehicles California Certified?
Not all new vehicles are manufactured to be sold to California residents or businesses. Many manufacturers make vehicles to be sold in the other 49 states. These vehicles (49-State) are made with smog equipment that meets federal emission standards, but not California standards. 50-State or California certified vehicles are made to be sold to California residents.

It's pretty common knowledge around here. But hey, whomever buys the bike will know for sure.

Yeah that's what I heard too. The out-of-state bike needs to have 7500 miles or more on it. If one plans to race it then it doesn't really matter.

i just spoke with DMV today. bad news.... They said the vehicle/motorcycle has to be above 7500miles. If it is at 7489 miles, it will not be able to register, nore any closer as of 7499miles. It has to be 7500miles and above to be registered legally for the streets.
Good luck with the sale sean. I was serious about purchasing this bike from you. But BUMP for a clean and honest seller!

I have a question for you guys. Why would a bike that is all 50 states legal and says so on the label that is on the frame not be legal to register in CA? Regardless of miles? That just makes no sense at all.
rwdforlife
11-15-2007, 09:57 AM
Yea, it does not either to me. I called DMV, and they transfered me to Technical Services in Sacramento. I told them specifically the situation I was going to be invloved in if I went ahead to purchase the Bike. They said any vehicle/bike has to be at least 7500miles to be purchased from another state to be registered here to CA.
Unless if Sean is willing to work out something to compensate for that 7500miles if i was to purchase it. :laughing But it just does not make sense, I agree.

Check this out. I emailed DMV in CA because I can't get through to them over the phone. This was their reply.
How To Register A Nonresident Vehicle
Definition of a nonresident vehicle
A nonresident vehicle was last registered outside the state of California. Anyone who brings a vehicle into California, or purchases a nonresident vehicle while in California, should be aware of the registration requirements.
NOTE: California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase unless it meets or is exempt from California Emission standards. If you acquire a 49-State vehicle (manufactured for all states except California) from another state or country, you may not be able to register your vehicle in this state.
So according to this, you should be able to register the bike in California. This bike says right on it that it is legal for California Emissions.

I don't know who you talked to, or if you gave them the correct info, but I just got off the phone with DMV (again!!) and they said "As long as the vehicle is 50 states legal, and it says so on the sticker that is on the frame, it is legal to register in California." This bike says on the sticker it is California Emissions legal. If you'd like, we can take it to DMV and get a vehicle verification from them to prove to you guys that it can in fact be registered in CA.

Did mention anything about the fact that the bike doesn't have at least 7,500 miles when you spoke with the DMV?
Adiggity
11-16-2007, 03:22 PM
Yes I did mention that. I told her it was a 2006 with 2300 miles. She said it doesn't matter how many miles it has as long as the sticker on the frame says it's CA Emissions legal. I've posted two references from the DMV website and called them twice now. All of which say clearly what the laws are and determine that this bike can be registered in CA without any problems. Like I said before, if your interested in this bike, and are worried about registration, we will go down to DMV with you and the bike and get a vehicle verification to prove there will not be any issues with registration.
I really wish you guys would get your facts straight before running off potential buyers with your "common knowledge" BS. I don't know how else to make you people understand that there will be NO issues with registering it in CA or ANY other state.
Please read this:
NOTE: California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase unless it meets or is exempt from California Emission standards. If you acquire a 49-State vehicle (manufactured for all states except California) from another state or country, you may not be able to register your vehicle in this state.
Key sentence:
California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase unless it meets or is exempt from California Emission standards.

Well, since that statement is pointed directly at me, I'll apologize. I'm not trying to run my mouth or derail a sale, my friend who is interested asked me, and I felt obliged to answer. I mean, I wouldn't want her to buy the bike, and then have it not registrable in CA.
I guess the easiest way of selling this bike is to meet with the potential party somewhere in CA and do the DMV transaction right at the office. :thumbup

hell, how many times does DMV look at the gauges when registering a bike, just put 7800 miles on the sales receipt/pink slip and your good to go.

I will go ahead and jump in as a third party mediator here. All the answers appear here in this thread, and I have no knowledge of rules or DMV's statements outside of this thread.
What appears to have most people derailed is DMV's definition of a new vehicle and the vehicles eligibility to be sold in Ca. They are stating that you can bring a new vehicle (less than 7500 miles) with a 50 state certification into California. What people have had trouble with is registering a new vehicle that is 49 state certified. So a 1991 FZR with 3000 miles that is 49 state only will have trouble being registered in CA because it is a NEW vehicle according to their definitions.

I realize your not trying to argue. Sorry if I sound a little perturbed, but I am getting frustrated with having to second guess myself after spending too much time already on backing up what I already found out in the first place.
Like I said before, if your interested in the bike and are worried about registration. We will go down with you to DMV and make sure it will register before we make the deal final.
