If you are smooth with the actual shifting action it shouldn't harm the bike. I often find that it is quicker to perform clutchless shifting during my trackdays.

First to second gear up and downshifts I would avoid not using a clutch. Otherwise, if you match engine speed you should be good to go. I'm guilty of doing it.

I'm not really sure what you're asking but I'll give it a shot. Try cornstarch!

Finding metal bits in your oil changes is a tough way to learn that your clutchless shifting is doing more harm than good.

I have probably 10k miles on a motor that has 95% of the upshifts done without a clutch. Unless you blow it badly you're fine. On the other hand I busted off a shift dog once :laughing

If you're concerned about the life of your motor, avoid clutchless upshifts.

How come?
I'd be worried about the transmission! :laughing
I don't generally bother with clutchless shifts. It just doesn't take that much longer to shift with the clutch. And on the track, I prefer using the clutch simply because I'm putting full power to the transmission when I shift. I'd rather just disconnect things and be safe.
If you do it wrong under full power, you can do mean things to the shift dogs. And they'll do even meaner things to whatever they get in between after they break off.

I was actually going to ask this question today...
I use the clutch into second but have been randomly (one hand on knee) clicking it up a gear when in commute traffic.

Clutchless shifting while just cruising along in traffic won't cause any problems, but I'd be concerned about not having full control of my bike in heavy traffic by riding with one hand on my knee.
Things can happen fast. You may not have time to get your hand back to the bar in case you need to do a sudden hard countersteer to avoid a crash.

It isn't as bad as I typed it out to be. But thanks for the concern :thumbup

Along with everything vehicle related, stuff wears out and can break. IF you decelerate and shift slowly allowing the gears to mesh with engine speed, im sure you will see no damage. If you dont decelerate and slam the gears you do run the risk of damage. im sure there are worse things for sportbikes and riders out there anyways. Like some of our crappy pot hole infested roads and shitty car drivers!

Ive read in Motorcyclist or Sportbike mag. that 1000's of clutchless upshift has shown no neg. affects if done properly. Ive started about 6 months ago and have noticed how smoothly it can be done with alittle practice. And after seeing some of these stuntas trash their bike and the dam thing still runs I got nothing to worry about.

Well, yea, specifically the transmission. I sometimes use "motor" or "engine" to include that whole lump there in the middle of the bike.
The problem with any kind of clutchless upshifting is that even the most skilled riders will end up banging the dogs together harder than if the clutch is used. You might not notice this or feel it. It may seem super smooth. And sometimes there really isn't that much of a difference between using and not using the clutch. But the reality is that if you're in the habit of not using the clutch, there will be a lot of times when you bang or crunch the dogs. And a lot of those times you won't notice it. And in the long run, the transmission will suffer as a result. I'd save the clutchless upshifts for those few times when you're really trying to make time and use the clutch for most of your riding. Unless you've got plenty of money.
