taking off upper clamp?

so I am going to be drilling my upper clamp to fit moto bars on it for that streetfighter thing and was wonder how involved it is to remove it vs trying to drill it on the bike.
is it as simple as loosening the forck clams... and unscrewing the bolt at the steering head?
its on a 96 ZX7r for reference.

put the bike on a front stand that lifts under the steering stem, and remember that when you pull the top triple the forks will want to move back and forth because they now have only one mounting point.
