Hyosung has just launched the RX450SM, an all new motorcycle to be publicly unveiled at the NEC show next week.

The RX450SM uses Hyosung’s own 450cc liquid-cooled single cylinder engine producing a claimed 50bhp at 8,500rpm. The engine is housed in a tubular frame which also acts as the oil tank for the dry-sump engine, and an aluminium swingarm and subframe help keep weight down to just 120kg without fluids.

The new motorcycle has a fully-adjustable rear monoshock and 45mm upside-down forks, and a Brembo caliper grabs a 260mm wavy disc at the front, and a 250mm disc at the rear. Price and colours are yet to be announced.

Still if its 50 HP and less than a DRZ400sm it might be FTW!

New RX450SM

For the first time, Hyosung is bringing a single cylinder, 450cc bike to the range. The new RX450SM is unashamedly a supermotard-style bike, designed for serious fun, but it would also make a great city commuter bike. It was designed using Hyosung’s ‘form follows function’ philosophy; it has a simple, elegant line, yet looks very purposeful.

The engine is a liquid-cooled DOHC four valve single cylinder, with an aluminium silicon (Si) sleeve for more power and durability. The aluminium alloy comprises over 30 per cent Si and is the only alloy of its type currently in production. A PF die-cast piston is more durable and exhibits less thermal expansion than normal cast and applied steel (FE) pistons. Vibration is reduced by counter-balancing. Power output is 50bhp at 8,500rpm.

The frame uses CrMo steel for lightness with rigidity. The down tube of the main frame acts as the oil reservoir and the aluminium sub-frame is a separate section for easier maintenance. The aluminium swing arm is light, but rigid enough for the most demanding conditions. The wheelbase is 1,486mm with a ground clearance of 278mm.

The 45mm upside down front fork is fully adjustable and has 250mm of wheel travel. The rear suspension features a 50mm fully adjustable damper and has 280mm of travel. Brakes are by Brembo with the wavy front disc 260mm diameter, and the rear 250mm.

The digital speedometer includes a stopwatch function. The dry weight of the Hyosung RX450SM is 120kg.

Brembo's ought to do OK, Cro-Mo frame too- the DRZ might have some competition!

...maybe I feel this way because I just paid for a DRZ400SM.......but it looks kinda cheap to me. I am sure it will be fun, and the numbers look good, but I don't think I could get over the "cheap" factor. Plus....that pic really looks to be a photochop. If you link to the MCN article and supersize the pic you can tell that the pic is not real....at least it sure looks that way to me.

It is great they are bringing low cost alt. bikes to the market, don't get me wrong, but I will stick with a product that has a bit more time proving itself for the time being:thumbup

50hp would be nice....I have not even picked up the 400SM yet, but I already know that it will feel like a dog before i massage it.....if only it could have the power of my 426sm that I built, but with the 400sm reliability.

264 pounds and 50 hp... I wonder what the maintenance schedule is like on that Korean engineering. Or I wonder how much the marketing stretches the truth

Hey the more alternatives that aren't $10k and high maint. the better.

They made SV engines for a long time, so it's not like they're starting completely from scratch. I just hope they use the right materials so the engines don't grenade.

Sounds pretty sweet. Hopefully it'll be priced competitively! Definitely will need some bar risers on that thing though.

More on this topic:

Hyosung SM at Birmingham NEC (http://www.motorcyclists-online.com/o1_788_NEC-Birmingham-2007--Hyosung.html)

Interested, though I've been underwhelmed by their bikes so far. It's good that the market is growing.
