View Full Version : Is an f4i clutch cover the same as the f4 cover?

I guess honda calls it the right side crankcase cover. I snagged an f4i real cheap with the intention of making a trackbike, but one of the things needing replacing is the clutch cover. Seems like I have a much easier time finding cheaper used f4 covers, but I'm wondering if it's a straight swap? Ron ayers doesn't seperate the bikes between 99-05, but they do list 2 different numbers.
Anybody know for sure if there are differences between the two covers?

why not get a billet cover for a track bike? a better investment? theyr'e definitely not cheap (at $139 + gasket) but it should be able to take a spill and not ruin your day

I second that tip. While the stock covers on F4i's are better than on F3's, it's still a good idea to get stronger covers for a track bike. One of the benefits is that the alternator cover is inexplicably smaller than the stock unit, giving you some extra ground clearance.

Thanks guys, but I need the clutch cover, not the stator cover. I love the nrc covers though.

I realize that. I just figured I'd throw in another reason for you to spend money on NRC stuff. You wouldn't want your bike's right side not matching its left, yes? :cool

Stock ones are cheap on Ebay or a salvage yard.

If they showed up on ebay when I check maybe, but when I see them they usually go pretty high.
dkc, I checked on there and the nrc site and neither list a clutch cover for an f4i?
So does anybody actually know if the f4i and f4 covers are the same?

I just checked on http://cyclepages.com and it seems NRC clutch covers for a 2000 F4 and 2001 F4i's share the same SKU. Looks like it's the same part, but I'd contact NRC to make sure.

If you buy an NRC cover, be sure to check that the depth of the bolt holes are the same as on the stock cover. I put NRCs on my GSX-R. One of the bolt holes was slightly shorter than on the stock cover, so the bolt bottomed out in the threads on the engine case before the bottom of the head reached the case cover. I didn't notice the difference until the bolt sheared off while I was torquing it ... fortunately it was easy to back out the sheared bolt.
Fit on the NRCs was fine otherwise, and they're less expensive -- and allegedly stronger -- than most other brands.

Are you 100% sure you're not looking at stator covers? I'm still not seeing a clutch cover offered for the f4/f4i.

You're quite right, my bad.

Nate, wouldnt you be able to look at a exploded parts list for both bikes and see if the covers have the same # ? Just a thought. I went to the dealer and had him look up rear rims for my F4i and found out that 01-02 rear rims are different part # than 03.

Probably could if I found another site, just checked ron ayers for just that reason, but they list 99-05 as having 2 possibilities but don't break up the years. They also did that for my vfr when I last bought parts from them, had to actually get a hold of them and have them tell me which one I needed. I'd go down to the dealer, but since I wouldn't be buying from them I wouldn't want to waste their time.

Go ahead and waste the parts guys at the dealers time, they dont mind in Hayward if their not too busy. I did you one better, I looked up the different years for the right side cover. 02 part #11330-MBW-E20, its the same # for an 99 which also states that it replaces part # 11330-MBW-670. So I guess originally it was a different part #, but if you went an ordered the part for an 99 you would get the same part for an 02. $177 brand new.

Thanks man, I never even noticed your last reply! So I guess it's a short between the bike and my ass! It started getting colder up here and I kinda lost interest in the track bike, but I really need to get the clutch cover on, fill it with oil and verifty that it's a runner so I can finish it and sell it. I need money worse than I need a track bike!

It's official, the f4 and f4i clutch covers are not interchangable! I tried every angle, tried installing it without the linkage and there's just no way it'll work. I noticed before that there was a slight difference where the cover lines up with the center of the basket, and it appears to be just enough to cause me greef. Guess it's back to looking for another f4i cover!

Thanks man. It does kinda suck, but that's what procrastination does for ya! I'll try cycle salvage this week, but they never have parts for any bikes I'm looking for and aren't usually willing to search.

It's been a little while, but I did snag an f4i clutch cover recently but haven't got around to installing it. Too many projects going at once and poorly budgeted time, but hopefully I'll get off my ass and finish the track bike!

umm...i put an f4 cover on my f4i.... dont know why you had issues
Are you sure the dowels were lined up right?

Sorry, I thought I had said something about that before. Yup, I even removed the dowels and tried installing without! There's a definate difference in the depth of the cover where it centers over the clutch basket, so maybe I have a first year f4 cover and you got a 2nd year, or maybe mine's just a fluke :dunno
