Went to All American in Santa Cruz, and came back with two, brand new bikes: a 2006 CRF250X and a 2007 DRZ-400SM. Took the plunge.

I haven't bought a brand new motorcycle in 8 years, everything I've owned has been 2nd hand, and after working on bikes buying them used, I figured I should finally take the plunge and treat myself.

WOW! Right on brother!! Im surprised tho...It seems your very knowledgable and familiar with bikes...and even though I LOVE my DRZ, I beleive it to still be a beginner bike...BUT on the other hand...a few simple mods and they are FUN. In any case...the fact that you have two bike that NO ONE else has farted on is BADASS! :thumbup:thumbup

and even though I LOVE my DRZ, I beleive it to still be a beginner bike...

Well, the decision on the DRZ is interesting. I always measure cost with fun, and having "tested" the DRZ on the street and track, both in completely stock trim, I was impressed (the pic below is Val's bike, stock, power wheelie in 2nd on the straight at Stockton). I needed a dependable bike that doesn't require a whole lot, that's what I missed about my XR650L.

I wouldn't consider it a beginner bike, but I would consider it beginner friendly. But for a vet rider, it's also awesome! When you buy an Euro, you're buying the power, but you're also buying the upkeep. I'm tired of wrenching, and that's why I went dependable/bulletproof/new :)

The CRF250X was decided on after Kelly bought her new KLX300R. I needed a trail friendly bike with an elec. start, kickstand and a four stroke. My CR is AWESOME, and would be a killer bike for the next buyer, but I only ride trails and I can really use that tractable power, and power it has!! I rode it up the street (like a kid doing the "walk" in brand new shoes to see if they fit) and I'm afraid that a wheelie addict like me will never touch that front wheel down :p

I'm keeping the CRFX stock, but the DRZ will need a few mods in a few. I'll ride it stock for a bit, but it'll prolly be modded early next year.

Buying two new bikes took a little planning, but I feel I can pay this all off by this time next year. We'll see! :cry

Hey D,
get down to the Yamaha shop and order a 2003/2004 YZF-R1 throttle assembly. They cost a whopping $13, and are a 1/6th turn throttle. It is a cheap, easy, fantastic upgrade for the SM. You will now have FULL throttle without having to grab another handful.

Congrats Dion, im sure you are well aware the limitless mods available for the bike. Even though you may have bought it to avoid having to tear into it, the motor is really easy to work on, and it has some good potential for power growth. So if you do enjoy tinkering its good for that as well.

Im pretty sure you will get bored with stock pretty quick.

Enjoy the new TOY :ride you deserve it. :Party

Great choices in my book and as Brad Reynolds said, you'll be modding the DRZ in no time. FCR, stage 2 cams and a full yosh or Muzzy pipe, 3x3 airbox mod and you're done. Oh, maybe a Clarke 3.9 tank for the Dualsport rides. Sheetiron 300 coming up next spring :teeth, put some rain tires on those 17s and rip it up man.

Dude, as much as I'd love to, I'm doing the most BASIC mods and keep the stock integrity. The reason? I'm tired of wrenching, and I really don't want to do that much to a brand new bike - I mean, I'm only half way through the break-in period. The MOST I will do is jetting, airbox mod and possibly a pipe. That's it! I want to keep this bike for a few years because it's going to take at least two years to own both of them outright.

my bike does just fine with 3x3 full pipe stage 2 jet... now it will be interesting to see how the 14/44 setup does... mostly for track ( you know me...im paranoid about riding street now)/ goat trails... it will be a wheelie machine!!!! fack D im excited for you... will it be staying yellow? I need to re-evaluate my paint scheme now that pinche suzuki makes a white one( im thinking ratty ass primer gray) and ooh ooh whens first trackiday with your new biotch?

I'm thinking about just adding a new graphic kit from XGX and calling it a day. So yes... ALL I'm doing is the 3X3, pipe, Stage 2 jet and THAT'S IT. It's the only way I'll stay sane.

Nice bikes. I rode a CRF 250 X in Mexico in July and it was kick ass. Way more power than I expected for a 250 four stroker. Did stand up wheelies from a roll with no problem at all.

I got this one last weekend...unfortunately, I haven't ridden it much

When you got them both in there what time did you actually turn out the light and walk away from them? Maybe we should start a pool on the time?! I'm picking midnight! Enjoy!

'91, punkazz! :twofinger

It was sold to a fellow BARF'er last night who was ready to replace the oil seal and have a small winter project. Seems he knew what to do, so I hope it brings the big smiles I had when I rode it.

Definite power difference between that and my new DRZ. My old DR was WAY faster, but the new DR-SM will just need a few adjustments to get it right, plus a good learning tool dealing with the restricted power.

For some reason I could turn my dual-sport DR WAAAAY faster than my DRZ. I guess I have to get used to the small wheels and wider tires.
