OK, looks like the last threads on where to go to buy a used CHP BMW R1150RTP was in 2005. Since then there has been nothing, and I'm in the market for one. Is there a good website anyone can suggest, other than Craigslist? AS Cycles in Roseville says they only occassionally get them in, saying that BMW doesn't have a buy back program any longer with the state. So where do I get one (without having to drive all the way down to the Los Angeles are) ??? Help! Thanks guys.

I would suggest calling the local BMW dealers; I know a couple of them that have had some in the past few months. The problem right now is most city departments have not had them long enough to get rid of them and CHP has ordered all their bikes to run until 100,000 miles before being put out of service because of all the contract issues. I heard San Jose is getting 8 or 10 new Hondas, anyone know what they ride right now?

SJPD will also have HD and some BMWs. I suspect they've used up most of the Kawasaki fleet by now.

They have it all- Kawi, Hardly, BMW- and 6 new Honda's on the way (the machines came in yesterday), so they'll be losing the junkyard soon after throwing a leg over (the PO is for up to 40 more Honda's)!

You may want to try California BMW in Mountain View, 650 966-1183.

If you want a used CHP bike, the right place to contact would be the CHP fleet office in West Sacramento. (916) 376-3598. Speak with Kathy and get on the waiting list.

If you want a used RTP from a municipal PD, you can contact the local BMW dealers. I believe A&S cycles out of Sacramento had a couple of them come in this month, and they may still have them.

Because the CHP is now riding bikes up to 100k miles instead of 60k, the last time they sold any CHP bikes was a couple years ago.. up until a couple of weeks ago, when they sold two '02 1150RTPs, four '04 1150RTPs, and a couple with blown engines.

I picked up one of the '04 RTPs:

Rob Nye (was in this years IBR) somehow was able to buy a R1200RT-P brand new. He went over the top outfitting it for the rally. His final drive failed him in Canada. The nice thing about the RT-P is the auxillary battery and the oil cooler fan. I'd almost consider trading up if it wasn't for the color. I don't want to be tooling around on a black and white bike.

How much do the former police bikes typically go for?

When I spoke to someone at A&S, they said that the local trade-ins with low mileage typically run around $10-12k (basically, he was quoting me retail for a few-year-old RT).

The CHP bikes, comparatively, were a steal. They sell them at auction, with bids accepted every day while they're available, and unsealed at 5pm. The minimum bid price for the '02s was $3600, and the minimum for '04s was $3800. (Around 100k miles on each).

Sierra BMW in Reno is the source for all NHP bikes. They just acquired and sold a few this summer. Las Vegas is soon to be recycling more bikes from what I hear so check www.sierrabmw.com used bike page often. When they do the bikes will show up in Reno.

In California, due to the recent debacle over the contract, the lifetime of a bike was extended from 60k to 100k miles. Now that it's all been settled (BMW won the contract again after the 'do-over'), eventually I'd expect it to be easier to find one with only 60k miles on it instead of 100k. But for a couple years I'd guess it might be more difficult.

I've never ridden one, but they're apparently quite comfortable and reliable. I wouldn't mind picking one up for cheap. It'd be an awesome commute bike. You would totally part the Red Sea when lanesharing. Especially if you wore a white half helmet with a black visor! :D
