It's too late for you now, but it's best to visit the court a few days (weeks) ahead of your own court date so that you understand how things work. Pay attention to those who get out of their ticket (if there are any) and also pay attention to the lame excuses that don't work (there will be lots of those).
It is also a good idea to read a book like Fight Your Ticket by Nolo Press beforehand to get some ideas. I went to the local library, in the reference section, to read it last time I needed the information.
Assuming the police officer who wrote your ticket shows up (the most likely case), there is probably nothing you can do at this point but pay your fine and get information about traffic school.

If this is your first court appearance, it is likely an arraignment. The officer will not be there and the case will not be dismissed for him not showing up.
You may want to go to www.TicketAssassin.com for info on fighting your ticket and the court procedures.
