Hey Guys:

It's the holiday season ( I am sure you did not notice :) ) and the drunk drivers are out there in force. I hope you give a bunch of tickets.

Please watch your butts. We all know sober drivers are terrible; drunk drivers are terrible and have diminished thought processes, reflexes, and sense.

Stay safe.

Ernie

Starting tonight I am working straight through the first, working DUI enforcement every night. Last year we managed to have zero DUI related injury collisions in our City during the holiday DUI campaign. We have the same goal for this year. Not planning on writing many tickets, but arrests are welcome :) Last year we made nearly 140 DUI arrests in just under three weeks.

We made 12 DUI arrests last night. I got two. Despite our best education efforts, people still decide to drink and drive :(

Ours also went well. We also did something different since this was County wide and put on by the Sheriff’s Office. All the outstanding DUI warrants in the County were pulled and all of us went out the first couple of hours trying to serve them. We got a lot of warrant arrest and since it was Friday, they were/are in jail all weekend if they can't make bail. No way they can be out drinking and driving this weekend.:thumbup

Is it ok if I put in personaly special request to all LEO's?

If you do get a drunk bastard this season, would you mind just slamming on brakes on the way to the station? If he's delivered with a waffle-face, that would be great.

Thanks.

Merry Christmas to all you uniforms. Stay safe and kick ass.

Had a roll-over DUI collision last night. I figured, "We'll there's our first 11-81 of the season." No harm no foul, 11-82. Damn drunks never get hurt.

I had a dream last night that I had two high speed pursuits too! The suspects ended up bailing and, no joke, climbing trees to get away.

Where the hell do these dreams come from? :laughing

see i dont see what is so hard about jsut waiting at your friend house til you sober up or spend the night, like you intelligently chose. Even if you are at a bar you can get a taxi, have a friend drive, or wait till you sober up

maybe I am just 17 and I cant fully understand the joy of driving a few hundred pounds at 60mph+ while intoxicated but I dunno you would just think it wouldnt take a lot to understand, me drunk driving baaad.

just sayin:x

I have had the drunk driver discussion a hundred times. There are guys out there with five DUIs still driving. They need to be in jail or in a treatment facility. I basically feel that 1 DUI should get fines and education, two should get fines, education and jail time, and three should get permanent loss of license and a MINIMUM of a year in jail. But that does not happen that much.

A friend of mine is a superior court judge, and is HARD on drunk drivers, more power to them. When you make the decision to drive drunk you make the decision to endanger others.

I consider alcohol abuse a disease, but that changes NOTHING in terms of how to deal with drunk drivers. We can not afford to have them on the street.

O and to make you guys laugh. I am 62. I can renew my license by mail for YEARS yet. Senior citizens should start to be tested by age 65, IMHO> Won't happen though. AARP will never let it.

... Despite our best education efforts, people still decide to drink and drive :(

It will never stop. The one that stood out for me is the one with an illegal immigrant drunk driver who was not injured in a head-on collision but killed a father of seven on Hwy 12. From what I remember he was a single parent. :(

In all seriousness....

Change begins with the voters. Get laws passed where convicted DUI drivers have to pay a heavy price. IE: Take away someones car. Jail time. Heavy fines.

I totally agree but the problem is a good majority of voters are heavy to social drinkers and you know how easy it is for some social drinkers to tip over to the other side. And they know it too so why set themselves up.

I saw it online the freeradio they have I was amazed the new stiletto2 and the sporters4 ( I will buy this one for my car) I don’t know how to upload the picture but it’s in Sirius/freeradio (http://www.sirius.com/freeradio). The laws are in place, judges choose to let people off easy.

The laws are in place, judges choose to let people off easy.

Then replace the Judges. Get the people in place to enforce the laws, as they are written.

Start showing photos of the aftermath of a DUI crash. Put interlock devices on the vehicles of convicted DUI drivers. Seize vehicles, make the crime hurt the violator.... for starters.

I could not agree more. Third strike should be the end of ever driving for any violator. Not to mention jail time and fines.

But aren't some or at least half of them already do not have a license to drive but they still drink and drive? You can read stories on the net, papers, or watch late night cops shows where this is happening.

Instead of being a ranter I should at least offer some form of solution. It may be costly and bothersome but they can do the same laws such as the firearm background check to bars, liquor, or public events. This would at least reduce or discourage a majority of them. Just my :2cents

Update: Even though the data is old I am quite sure it most likely increased.

"The study was conducted by Texas A&M University's Texas Transportation Institute, an engineering program devoted to solving transportation problems. The Institute scrutinized Department of Transportation (DOT) crash data from 1993-97. The DOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System showed that 278,078 drivers were involved in 183,749 fatal crashes during that period. Of these, 38,456 of the drivers didn't possess a valid license: 7.4% of this total had suspended/revoked/expired/canceled/denied licenses, 3.7% had no known license and 2.7% of the drivers' license status was unknown. The findings also concluded that 28% of these offenders' licenses had been suspended or revoked three or more times. "These are not just ordinary people who forgot to renew," says Dr. Lindsay Griffin, who headed the study. (Earlier research concluded that anywhere from 30 to 70 percent of all people with suspended or revoked licenses continue to drive anyway.)
The crash data showed that drivers with invalid licenses had a propensity toward drunk driving, which explains why many had multiple suspensions. Geography was also a factor. New Mexico was the highest-risk state. Of all fatal crashes there during the study period, 23.9% of the drivers didn't have valid licenses. Jurisdictions that stuck out as having high rates of invalid-license-involved fatalities were Arizona, California, the District of Columbia and Hawaii. Maine had the least with 6.4%; the average was 13.8%"
