You could get him what I, and it seems every other cop I know, got....
A flask with his name on it.
I got a nice flask w/ my name etched in it from "Things Remembered" or whatever, it wasn't expensive and it was a good light-hearted though still useful gift.
Another gift, though more expesnive, would be a duty bag from galls or something else. He will without a doubt need a duty bag for his new occupation....

Rechargable compact Streamlight (Stinger, etc..) or Leatherman are both outstanding gifts. Oakley-type sunglasses too. Most other equipment will be issued by his agency or will be dependent upon what is issued (gear bag, earpiece, etc..). A few agencies issue digital cameras to patrol.. if they don't, he will want to get one, if he does not have one already.
If you just want to spend a little on the gift and maybe take him out to a nice dinner, you could get him one of these...

Pen-style tactical cuff key. They are around $6.
You could get him a matching black Space Pen too. Space Pens are great for some of the forms he will be using, particularly the backside of various DMV/CHP forms (like the 180).
An academy graduation gift is cool, but completing FTO is really a much bigger deal to me. Not everyone that passed the academy will pass FTO. You will definately want to celebrate him passing FTO.

I bought this one for my GF's uncle when he got a promotion. I just think it was cool because it says police on it and is a good knife.

Yeah ! 1980s!! That is MODERN. dammit :laughing:laughing
Can you drop a streamlite on a concrete sidewalk and pick it up and it works? That is what i have always liked about mag lites. The last forever. I lost my best one down a Victorian mansion wall. But a twenty year old maglite works just like a new one. They are really well made.

I 2nd this one, just cause you pass the academy doesn't mean you're gonna pass FTO. Prime example, friend of mine graduated towards the top of his academy class, father's an officer, 20+ yrs with this dept. Got ousted towards the end of his FTO, dunno what for, but if he wants to pursue his career in LE he has to start over again. :( So don't be too generous with the gift(s) till after his FTO and probation are done.
