Lets be careful out there....

Pickup plows into officer, SUV
Driver of parked vehicle killed in crash on Hwy. 101
Thursday, December 20, 2007

A pickup swerved into a CHP motorcycle officer and a vehicle the officer had stopped. The parked car then burst into flames. The officer was in critical condition Wednesday night. A CHP officer was knocked out of his boots when he was struck by a pickup truck. The truck's driver and a passenger were injured.

One person was killed and a California Highway Patrol officer was seriously injured in a crash on northbound Highway 101 near La Conchita on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Ventura-area motorcycle officer was on the right shoulder of Highway 101 just south of Padre Juan Canyon Road with a sport utility vehicle he had stopped about 4:30 p.m. when a pickup truck with two motorcycles in its bed swerved onto the shoulder and hit the parked SUV, said Officer Shawna Davison, a CHP spokeswoman.

It was not clear Wednesday evening what caused the pickup to swerve. The driver, Jeremy White, 20, of Paso Robles, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and booked at Ventura County Jail, CHP officials said.

The SUV burst into flames after the crash, and it was pushed about 60 yards along the highway.

The officer, an 11-year-veteran of the CHP, was knocked out of his boots and into the bushes, a witness said.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP officer was taken by helicopter to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

White and a passenger in the pickup suffered minor injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

An off-duty military police officer from Vandenberg Air Force Base and a medical researcher from Santa Barbara who were among the first people on scene attempted to rescue the driver of the SUV, they said.

They pulled him from his burning vehicle and began performing CPR but could not revive him, said the researcher, Robert Woodson.

Woodson saw a huge car fire as he rounded the curve of the highway toward the beach, he said.

When he stopped, he saw the CHP officer's motorcycle and thought the CHP was already on scene.

Then he noticed an officer's boot on the side of the road.

Woodson and a Ventura County dispatcher who stopped at the scene found the officer unconscious in the bushes about 20 yards from the crash site, he said.

The dispatcher used the officer's radio to call for help. The driver of the pickup was visibly distraught, Woodson said.

White cried and said he wasn't sure what happened, but thought he might have had a blown tire, Woodson said.

None of the other people involved in the crash were identified.

Highway 101 was closed between Emma Wood State Beach and Seacliff as a result of the crash and authorities expected it to be closed late into the night.

Northbound traffic was diverted from Highway 101 onto Old Pacific Coast Highway at State Beaches.

Injured CHP officer regains consciousness

Hope Officer Anthony Pedeferri can make a full recovery.

Reading this made me think of a donation to the 11-99:

Do LEO consider this good choice for charitable donations?

That is a good cause; however it only assists one single agency.

There is the California Memorial: http://www.camemorial.org/

Or the National memorial that is also building a museum: http://www.nleomf.org/TheMuseum/overview.htm

and the in California you can always donate right on your tax form when you file your taxes.

Officer Pedeferri completed the Ironman Triathlon, along with seven other triathlons, this year. He's still on a ventilator. Link (http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2007/dec/21/chp-officer-remains-in-critical-condition/) to story.
