Hi:

I was wondering if I could use 10W-40 Motor Oil for my 1999 Yamaha R6. Or do I have to use 10W-30.

Thanks

What is the difference between the two? What is the consequences of using the 10W-40?

no consequences. 40 is just a little heavier.

I use 10-40 Castrol. I do my oil changes every 1000 miles.

There won't be any major consequences. Here's what you can expect:

- Slightly lower power and gas mileage, due to extra pumping effort.
- Slightly higher oil pressure.

I highly doubt either of these will be noticeable in practice.

I expect that if you check your service manual, you'll find that 10W-40 is listed as an acceptable oil when 10W-30 isn't available. There is usually a guide to what oil is recommended based on ambient temperature.

In extreme cases, running too thick an oil can cause oil starvation, overheating, and pinging. Running too thin an oil will result in metal to metal contact in your bearings. The 10 point viscosity difference in your case will not cause any of these problems.

I run Rotella 5w-40 syenthtic in all the bikes at my house (6) including track bikes and race bikes. At Walmart this stuff costs $16.00 for 4 quarts.

Shouldn't be too big of a deal. If I remember correctly, all 40 wt. oils are not equal. some 40 wt. oils have a viscosity closer to some other oil company's 30 wt.
I run Mobil 1, but I may try Rotella. I've heard very good things about it.

'Won't make a difference in our local climate. But whatever you run, make it a synthetic.

Make sure the 30W isn't energy conserving.
