ive read that the stock damper sucks, however for street and light track use instead of buying a damper you can just take off the stock one and replace the oil with a heavier wt like 10 or 15wt fork oil. is there any truth to this before i go off half cocked?
thanks all

buy a damper. if you change the oil on a non adjustable stock damper, the chances of it being in a workable range are not that great. That is, it will more likely end up too stiff or not stiff enough. ( I use a very narrow adjustment range on my damper)

i've got a stock 750 damper in the garage that you can have if you want to try it out without the risk of messing up yours.

I had a 02 gsxr 750 stock damper got speed wobbles so bad I broke the ear of the damper to the neck. I went out and got a G.P.R. for the money I can't believe I went this long without one. I love it you need one now

how much are the gpr dampers
...I've read that..
Are you going to spend a bunch of money and time solving a problem you don't even know you have? Why not just use that cash on a track day to find out that what you have is probably more than adequate.

even if it does do its job perfectly fine i still have the urge to tinker with things...its a sickness really
...how much...
purchasing and tinkering are totally different things.

true, my origonal question was about changing the oil in the stock damper but then i got curious as to how much a new damper would cost

Stock dampener has worked fine for me so far. IMO, unless you've reached the limits of your stock dampener (and you'd know if you did) then just leave it alone because it's doing its job.
But to your question, I wouldn't tinker with heavier oil, I'd just replace it with an Ohlins or Scotts aftermarket dampener.

i know for a fact that i havent reached the limits of my stock damper ive only been riding for about two years, i guess more or less i was looking for a small winter project that wasnt to expensive lol
buy one off e-bay and try some mods. it will cost almost nothing and you will learn a lot even if you screw it up. you can always put the original back on.
ALSO-
IT'S 'DAMPER' NOT 'DAMPENER.

fixed...what mods can i do to it other than just chaning the oil in it? or is that pretty much it
polish, orifice size, shim stack, valve design, relief springs. whatever is in there is tuneable. i haven't pulled that specific one apart so i don't know exactly what's in there. the concepts are the same as any damping system.
you may want to learn a little more about suspension fluids before you start: http://www.pvdwiki.com/index.php?title=Suspension_Fluid

Dude, just leave it. Its never given you problems right? Better than blowing $450 on an aftermarket unit. My stocker works great.
