I have a 2003 Emmick race kart set up for the sportsman class. I am looking to sell or trade for a race or street bike. The kart is in great condition and ready to race.

question - where can you drive these things besides looking for an open parking lot?

There's a kart track at Infineon, one in Dixon, and one in Stockton that I know of.

Good question. There are quite a few karting tracks in Northern California such as Infineon (kart track), Stockton, Davis, Dixon, Sacramento (Prarie City). Also, you can race these karts with the NCK at the big track at Infineon, Thunderhill, Reno Fernley, Buttonwillow, Laguna Seca (?), Willow Springs, etc. Finally, you can race them in parking lots with the SCCA in the timed solo events.
You change the gearing depending on the track (big or small). The kart can easily surpass 110mph on the bigger tracks and 80mph on the smaller tracks. It is awesome fun being inches off the ground going that fast and hitting 3+ g's in the corners. Michael Schumacher used karts to train in the offseason his entire F1 career because they were the closest thing in power to weight and handling g forces.

Jim,
It is a two stroke 100cc. The service intervals are not bad and they are inexpensive. I just put a new top end in it a few hours ago. Some poeple replace the top end (which is cheap) every 25 hours, others every 50 or more hours. If you are racing it full time, it makes sense to tear it down completely at the end of the season to look at the bottom end as well.
Roadstergal,
I am looking for approximately $2000 - $2200 or a trade of equivilant value or + or - cash.

I am getting out of karting is the reason I am selling it. I really want to get into racing bikes so I guess we are headed in opposite directions. This kart is awesome for a person who is getting into karting. Not only is this class the biggest at every event, it is one of the easiest to drive and therefore learn in. Everyone wants a 125cc shifter to get started and that would be like getting a 1000cc race bike to learn. It can most certainly be done but it usually slows the learning curve. Since this chassis can also be used for 80cc shifter as is, or 125cc shifter if you put the front brakes on, all you have to do is sell the existing motor and buy a shifter motor if you want to race in the shifter classes.
The difference between this kart and a shifter is the motor as the chassis is the same. This motor uses a centrifugal clutch so you don't shift, you change the gearing based on the type of track you want to run. I raced both and the shifters take much more skill to drive because not only are inches off the ground going up to 100mph with 40 to 50 other karts on the track, but in a shifter you have to shift between 30 - 80 times per lap. I can honestly say that when you are going 80mph - 90mph (which feels like 150mph) into a 90 degree turn and you have to take one hand off the steering wheel to downshift 4 times while the rear end is wiggling around and there are four karts surrounding you, it scares the crap out of you at first. You spend so much effort trying to be in the right gear (because the powerband is extremely small) that you miss learning the fundamentals.
Anyway, that's just my opinion but I think most good karters would agree.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

I didn't answer your question about karting information resources. http://www.norcalkarters.com/ is a good resource but if you type in karting into google or KT100 karting into google, you will find tons of info. The class this kart races is based on the current motor is the KT100 class.
