So the BARF auction was really popular and it's pretty obvious we have some cigar smoker 'round here.
Thanks to Ratters I have a renewed interest in cigars and I've found myself in the garage almost every night this past week after everyone goes to bed for a nice bit of quiet time with a stogie.
What is your current favorite? Anything a great deal right now?
I'm currently enjoying a Punch Gran Puro. Just about 20 minutes into this thing, if that, and it's pretty mild so far. Thick smoke, a little creamy without the overbearing peppery taste of the Fuente I had Saturday.
So lets here the reviews- what's good and cheap? What is expensive and a rip off?

Ah, so the turn to the darkside is now complete. :D
That Gran Puro will kick up a notch as you get to the halfway point.
And don't worry, I got an Italia for ya next time I see you. They're pretty good, not exactly in my flavor profile though.
Had and El Mejor Espresso tonite. Great Nicaraguan puro maduro I get of cbid for under two bucks a stick. Already looking forward to my post work cigar tomorrow. :teeth

Last saturday I bought two sticks. A CAO gold maduro and a Cuesta Rey Centenario. I smoked the Cuesta Rey Centenario while I was fucking off in the garage. It was ok, but didn't seem to have much flavor. Maybe my taste buds were screwed up.
Next up the CAO gold maduro. I like the regular CAO gold so I figured I would give the maduro a shot.

Ratters has me thinking about the Camacho Triple Maduro. Damn that was a creamy, fine smoke.

If you like em a bit stronger (maduro) and don't want a huge commitment (time-wise), I recommend Partagas Black Label Prontos - they on the smaller side, around 4.5"x36. But they smoke like the big dogs. All the online guys sell em - six tins of five for about $40. Good value. I get em at Mikes (http://www.mikescigars.com/ProductDetail.aspx/productID/12324/name/PARTAGAS%20BLACK%20LABEL%20PRONTOS%206-TIN%20MAD).

Yeah, I have the prontos quite frequently. Good 30-40 minute smoke.
And yeah, I have yet to find one person who doesn't enjoy the Triple Maduro. Got my neighbor hooked on them too.
Cigars International had a great Joe Cigar deal a couple days ago selling the Joya de Nicaragua Antano consul size for 19.99 shipped for ten of them. I orderd twice. ;) Now I'm going back to my resolution not to buy any more cigars. :teeth They've been doing some great deals lately. I check every night at 9pm to see what the new selection is.

Well, just make sure to stay away from cigarbid.com. You'll save yourself into the poorhouse.
Working on a fabulous 601 Red right now. Not as full bodied as touted but smooth and full of great flavors.
BTW, if you want to learn alot about different cigars I highly recommend www.stogiereview.com. Lots of video reviews done by regular guys. Really helped me learn a lot. The Your Questions My Answers videos are great too. In fact I'm watching the latest one right now.

Famous is a good shop. They also have www.cigarmonster.com which is similar to Joe Cigar, just doesn't have nearly as many good deals. Mostly just seem to be overstock on crappy brands. Every once in awhile they have a gem though.

Trying out a Montecristo right now.
*bump*
The cheapest smoke I like are the machine made Topper extra oscuro which run about 80 cents a stick.
As we move up to the less expensive hand rolled cigars (around $2) I like the Sancho Panzas and the El Mejor Esspressos.
In the $3 to $4 range I like Gurkhas, Rocky Patels, and Olivas.
note: prices listed are from online sources and do not include the Cali tax you'll pay at a local store.
In terms of what are overpriced and overhyped, I've got to point a finger at CAO.

Hey Justyn, are you in town? Darrell, Bob, and others are coming Saturday to herf a bit over here. PM me for the address. Hope you can make it.
Working on a Gurkha Black Puro right now. I prefer the X-Fuerte but it's still an OK smoke. Funny thing about Gurkhas is their MSRP is always outrageous but you can get them for less that $3 a stick on cbid pretty much any time you want.

Yeah, I just got back in town very late Tuesday night.
What's funny is I just finished smoking a Gurkha Black Puro like 10 minutes ago. It was a slow smoke, I ended up leaving almost 3 inches in the ashtray because I got tired of sitting out in the garage (and I finished all my beer).
I'll PM you for an address, but I can't promise I'll make it. If I do I have a handfull of ISOM's I can hand out.

I enjoyed it quite a bit actually. Shade grown wrapper, light to medium bodied smoke. I bought it on a lark at the local store having done no research on it at all. It's their budget smoke but well made with a light draw. I did get an uneven burn from about the 1st 1/3 to 1/2 and had to do a re-light. My palette isn't developed enough to pick out all the highlights but I would buy it again. :thumbup

I guess I'm spoiled being in Canada with the selection (but not the price). I normally enjoy Romeo & Julliets #4 or Cedro #2. Last time I was in Cuba I brought back some #1 R+J and a few boxes of Montecristos.
While the Cohibas are nice: I can't justify the extra over a Montecristo. Especially a Montecristo #2 (torpedo).
But... The last few R+J's I've had weren't all that great and I made a switch. My Humidor is packed with CAO Mx2's right now (along with the "sampler" so I can test out a few other CAO cigars if I get broed). The CAO Mx2 is a great, full bodied, smooth cigar. I find a good Maduro cigar to taste very similar to a good Cuban cigar and these CAO's are of good quality.

Canada is great if you want Cubans but pretty much sucks for NCs cause they're expensive and not the best selection. At least that's what my Canadian BOTLs tell me. Lucky for me I've found very few Cuban cigars that I like. ;)
Gotta clean up tonite for tomorrow. Then I'm thinking about a Padilla Obsidian to finish the evening. :)
And I might have a Greycliff for you too Justyn, so get your ass up here. :thumbup

So I'd only ask a question like this on Barf 'cuz I know what I have to ask is hardly shocking for the Barf community.
I used to like to smoke the green stuff with the purple smoke and realized I smoked it for the taste and flavors of really good 'tabac.' ;) wink wink ;) :p At times the buzz is great but the real thing for me was savoring the flavor, the smell of it lit and pre-light.
Does anyone know of a cigar that mimics the taste of a very high quality sativa or indo? When I was into it I only smoked 'the good stuff' so I'm not looking for the taste of vapor ass, stress, mex, dirt weed, whatever you wanna call it. No stems and seeds dude. :Party :laughing
I guess I'm looking for something fruity and bright...those who know, will understand. Not really into flavored smokes but would be willing to give it a go if anyone has any good suggestions. If I was a cigar blender I would definitely have something like that in the rotation, if possible, because you know there is a huge market for it. Even if it isn't very p.c..

It is a smoking lounge, new leather sofas and recliners. Two good size flat screens on the walls and stand up humidors full of cigars. He's got all the knick knacks too. For the aficionado it's definately not the place to buy anything (quantity). You'll see what i'm talking about on the prices. He does have a good selection though. He may even have wi-fi, he was cruisin the net on a lap top while we were there. When i was there UPS was dropping off ten large boxes and the guy was going to put a walk-in humidor in the corner. Well, had a Don Pepin Garcia Blue Label. This is my second one. Didn't really like the first one I had but thought I'd give it another shot as I have a box of the things. Hit me with a ton of pepper at the back of the throat right off the bat, but flavor pretty absent. The ash is very flakey. Flavor picked up a bit after about an inch in or so. It was very leathery. It was OK but definitely not my favorite flavor profile.

Was it a natural or maduro. I find the natural's really boring but the maduros are pretty good.

I don't smoke very often. Usually 1 a week with a nice Scotch.
My humidor is stocked with R&J's cuban and non-cuban, Rocky Patels, Sancho Panza, Avo, Montecristo, Fonseca, and La Flor Dominicanan. Also sharing space with my humidor is about 60 Hungarian non filter cigarettes made with shredded pure tobacco leaves. They are smooth as a baby's ass and twice as strong as a Malboro Red :teeth

So, I tried the LG, Graycliff Crystal and Graycliff Espresso with Pacifisticuffs tonight along with a Glenfiddich 21 single malt.
I didn't really like the LG Diez - it seemed less flavorful than the Crystal and the came apart about halfway through. I did like the Espresso but the Crystal was the clear winner for the evening. Full of flavor but not as harsh as the Diez and smooth until the last little bit. You could really taste the espresso in the Espresso which was a nice change of pace.

5 Vegas Gold
CAO Gold
Perdomo Champagne
Perdomo Platinum

Punch Rare Corojo
Ghurka anything...they all kinda taste the same to me :p
Avo XO Notturno (the orange tubos)
Rocky Patel 1990 Vintage
Davidoff Aniversario no. 3
Um...try some of those and let us know how it goes. :)
Cigars are cool because while social, they are also very personal. Ratters hates some of the stuff I love. The only way for you to figure out what you like is to dive right in and try all kinds of different things.
Another great tip I picked up from Ratters and the group we herf with is to have some sugar around. If you feel woozy down a packet or two of sugar and it will help to neutralize the negative effects of the nicotine.
Puff slow, like one puff every one or two minutes once you get it burning nice and you should be good to go.

So, I tried the Romeo Y Julieta Maduro Reserve and the Montecristo White on Saturday when a buddy came into town.
I really liked the RYJ - reasonably smooth, tasted good, and good construction. I'm finding that I like the maduros better and better.
The Montecristo seemed bland in comparision and even my non-cigar smoking friend felt it was less flavorful than the maduro. It was well made but burned unevenly - but I don't find that to be a big problem since I like playing with my lighters. :teeth
A few weeks ago I tried the Acid Blondie and was repulsed by the syrup (or syrup like substance) on the wrapper. I can see how some people like them but it was too much for me...
I also tried the CAO Earth Nectar and I liked the pipe-like smoke and flavor. But even the flavor became too much at the end. So, if/when I buy one again I'll be sure to pick up a corona. Does this make me a girl since I liked a flavored cigar? :laughing

I need to smoke a me a nice cigar. Someone hook me up with a nice medium bodies smoke, nothing that pulls too easy, I like a little resistance. Something that will go with what I've got left of my Oban.
Any of you guys want to play poker tomorrow night?

Wow a cigar thread on barf...cool I just started back in on cigars after many many years off.
Bought a humidor and quickly had to order another larger one dangit!
Just got in a shipment of mainly maduros. I got alot so they can age before I smoke them all.
Boxes of
Hoyo De Monterrey excaliber epicure maduro
La Flor Dominicana double ligero chisel maduro
Tatuaje havana VI angelos natural
Oliva serie V double robusto
Carlos Torano maduro robusto
i based the picks on reading a couple issues of cigar afficianado and smoking hopefully similar smokes from local shops.
Hopefully I didnt screw up too bad with my order
I was recently in bahamas for the company and i snuck back a few five packs of small cubans. im not into the gigantic cigars yet.
cohiba siglo II, montecristo no. 4, i think...cohiba secreto maduro, couldnt buy by the box of 20 as i had to get it in my suitcase with no room....that and these things are an arm and a leg

OK, boys, I was too lazy to read through the whole thread, so I apologize in advance if these have already been mentioned. So far, the best Cigars I've had were the Churchills that I smoked in Costa Rica. (I'm still bummed that I chickened out of bringing some back with me.) Apparently, I like the more mellow smooth cigars.
When we were in Vegas a couple weeks ago, my buddy turned me on to Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur #3 cigar. Man that was some good-tasting stuff, and it is apparently dirt cheap. I'm no expert. I just know what I like.
Here's the link for the sampler:

I'm curious about how the flavored cigars are viewed by the aficionados...like the Acid cigars.
One thing you learn about the Acid line: If you put your Acid cigars in the humi with your 'regular' cigars, they all turn into Acid cigars... I enjoy a Kuba Kuba from time to time (how often do people say 'that smells good!' when you're smoking a cigar?), but you have to keep them separate...

I made it to a BBQ today and tried a few new one's...for me anyway.
Drew Estates Java - came recommended by a fellow cigar fan (Bobarian) and it was a good smoke. Any more "infused" and I wouldn't like it. Slightly sweet with some coffee undertones and that's about all my poor palate could recognize. Draw was very easy so once I reached the halfway point the smoke was hot. It was almost soggy to the touch as it smoked. Average build quality...
CAO MX2 - Good build quality, moderate draw, moderately creamy smoke (more than the Rocky but less then the Camaco), good flavor, good overall overall. Got smoother at the halfway point. Would definitely smoke again.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 - I had this smoke second and it was really just OK to me. Not as creamy a smoke as the CAO, but good construction and draw. Burned well but didn't do much for me.
And, of course, a Camacho Triple Maduro - nothing to add here that Ratters hasn't already said :teeth

I haven't smoked many cigars and I've never bought them myself. What are some decent cigars for the relative nooblet? My tastes tend towards red wines and dark beers.
I'm in Richmond and fairly close to El Cerrito and Berkeley. Does anyone know of a friendly and helpful cigar shop in my general area? (Marin near the Richmond Bridge is a possibility too.)

Cigar: Punch Rare Corojo Magnum
Vitola: 5.1x54
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan, Honduran
Noticabbly absent: Corojo
Price: $8 at the B&M (CA), about $80 a box of 25 online
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/IMG_0085.jpg
Setting: Sun room, about 85 degrees, 6pm and having a Peach Snapple.
Pre-light: Cigar as a nice oily reddish brown wrapper with medium veins and a noticable seam. Cut was easy with the palio and the draw was just slightly resistant and left a sweet taste on the tongue. Cigar seemed fairly firmly packed without any real soft spots.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/IMG_0090.jpg
First third: Lit up easily and the resting smoke from the toasting has a very pleasant aroma. Wish they made incense that smelled like this. Taste is initially fairly woody and slightly grassy. Smoke volume and body seem fairly medium and the strength on the mild side. Burn is a tad wavy but nothing that needs correcting yet. So far off to a decent start.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/IMG_0092.jpg
Second third: Burn has corrected itself without any butane correction. Flavor is picking up a tad and the grassy flavor has gone away. The aftertaste is plesant and on the thin side. The ash seems fairly firm but has a nice hole right in the foot.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/IMG_0093.jpg
Final third: Flavor has really picked up with some earthy as well as woody flavors. Body has picked up a bunch too. There is almost no spice to the cigar which is sometimes a nice thing. The ash has gotten a bit flakey, but I only ashed myself once, which is pretty good for me.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/IMG_0095-1.jpg
Final thoughts: A good medium smoke with good strong flavors. I often reccommend these to newer smokers looking for something full flavored that's not going to kick their ass in the nicotine department. I find it funny that the Rare Corojo has a corojo so rare it's not even in the smoke.
Smoke again: Sure, I have a few more in the humidor
Buy again: At the B&M but probably not a box
Reccommend: Sure, already have

Cigar: CAO America Landmark
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro and Natural
Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan, Italian, and American
Binder: ?
Vitola: Landmark (super toro) 6x60
Price: About $10 at my B&M, but that was awhile ago. He was currently out of stock, probably due to the 4th of July holiday.
Setting: Sun room, about 5:30pm, and about 80 degrees out. Pairing with a Barq's root beer.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0006.jpg
Pre-light: The cigar has been resting in my humidor since last fall. It's a very pretty cigar. A bit large for my liking, I prefer smaller ring gauges. The pinstripe effect of the wrapper is attractive if a tad uneven. The wrapper has some medium size veins and a couple patches. The label is pretty, nice and loose which I really like in a cigar and the foot label came off easily. Cut was easy and the prelight draw was nice with a touch of hay taste to it.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0008.jpg
First third: Well, off to a bit of an uneven start, but I always have a hard time getting these large ring gauge cigars lit. The first tastes are kinda sweet with lots of smoke and nice looking zebra striped ash. Burn line is a bit thick and wavy but I kinda expected that with the double wrap. Flavors are mostly just tobacco, kinda nutty with a hint of wood to it. The intensity of flavors is kinda on the medium side as well. The ash stayed firm with no flakiness to about the inch and a half mark where it decided to drop in my lap. The smoke is nice and thick and medium in body.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0011.jpg
Second third: Right as I was finishing up the first third the maduro wrapper decided to come apart at the head. Luckily with the double wrap I just peeled a part off and still had the natural wrapper hanging tough. Flavors in the second third are staying pretty much the same, with maybe an increase in the nuttiness. The body is picking up just a tad, but still well in the medium range. The draw througout the cigar has been just about perfect with a slight resistance but producing plenty of smoke. As I get toward the end of the second third the flavor is getting a leather taste along with the nuttiness and the body is picking up even more. Burn continues to be wavy but nothing that needs correction.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0014.jpg
Final third: Well, once I took the label off the whole maduro wrapper wanted to unravel but I was able to keep it together for awhile. The flavors are picking up in intensity a bit and the body is getting into the medium/full range, but the flavors are staying pretty consistent. As I got to the last couple inches a bit of bitterness came up. I tried purging but it remained. Not a lot, just enough to feel on the back of the tounge. I finally ditched the cigar with about an inch left at the hour and thirty mark.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0017.jpg
Final thoughts: This was a very large, and minus the wrapper issue it seemed very well made. Overall not a bad smoke, but just not my taste. I don't think I'll be having another but I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend one to someone who likes the woody leathery taste.
Like it: Eh, it was OK, but not my flavor.
Buy again: Probably not
Reccommend it: Sure, if they like that particular flavor.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Maduro
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua and Honduran corojo
Vitola: Belicoso 6x54
Price: About $5 a stick of CI but you can routinely get the bundles for under $50 on cbid
Setting: Sun room, about 85 degrees out. Drinking an IBC root beer. About 4:30pm.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_00022-1.jpg
Prelight: Once the cello is removed you can see the cigar has a maduro wrapper of very inconsistent coloration. Even though this should be a fault I find it strangely attractive. The cigar is pretty squishy with a couple soft spots. It has been sitting in my humidor at 65% for a minimum of three months. I'm not a fan of belicosos because I can't peel the cap off but this cut cleanly enough with the Palio. The wrapper has a nice spicy smell to it that tingles the nose. The foot continues the spicyness but with a wet hay component.

First third: The resting smoke as I completely lit the foot was very pleasant. The first draws were rewarded with thick clouds of spicy sweet nicaraguan tobacco. From somking so many Camachos I can really taste the corojo leaf in there mingling with the maduro sweetness. Right off the bat you can tell it is a hearty smoke, and though not full in strength of nicotene it is definitely full of flavor. Burn is wavy but even and ash is dark and separated. In fact after about 3/4 of an inch it collapsed on to my laptop and exploded.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_00052.jpg
Second third: Well, as I hit the second third I had to give it a touchup. I find that cigars with thick maduro wrappers that are smoked on the slow side tend to burn the filler faster than the wrapper. Happens to me a lot as I'm a very slow and easily distracted smoker. But the flavor continues to be really great. A bitter sweet chocolate flavor with just a tingle of spice on the tongue. I haven't had one of these in awhile and I must say I'm really enjoying the visit with them again. The body is now in the medium to full range and the nic bite seems to be picking up a tad as well, or I'm just really tired from the day. :) Ash continues to be really flakey.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_00062.jpg
Final third: Well, all has been great since the touchup. The flavors are bold and tasty. A coffee bitterness has started at the end of the second third that's really nice. Burn has been wavy but even, though I picked up the pace a bit. Overall a great flavorful earthy smoke so far. The aftertaste is pleasant and lingering. The smoke is wonderful and thick and great for blowing smoke rings. I did have to touch it at about the 2 inch mark, though I think it may have to do with the celing fan blowing down upon it. The body definitely entered the full range and the spice is kicking up a notch though still staying off the back of the throat.
Final thoughts: I've always really enjoyed these though you really have to give them some rest before they're really smokeable. I had a couple burn issues requiring touchups but nothing that detracted from the enjoyment of the smoke. Smoke time was a bit fast for me at 1:15, but I was picking up the pace to keep the burn right. This cigar really pairs well with the rootbeer and brings out the molasses taste out of the IBC. I'm glad I still have a bundle and change of these left, I really need to start smoking them more often. :) Overall a great smoke for about $2.50 a stick.
Smoke again: Soon.
Buy again: For sure when I come close to running out and can give them a three month lead time until I smoke them. And of cbid, of course
Reccommend: Highly for people who like a full bodied spicy sweet maduro.

A lot of the cigar cognisciente pooh pooh the Acid cigars. Personally I found quite a few that were enjoyable, though I don't really smoke them anymore. If you loved it try to score some off cigarbid.com to save some dough.
Had a Camacho SLR Maduro tonight. Man I love those things.

I'm starting to get more so into cigars too. My first one was a real montecristo and it was most delightful. Steve gave me a couple and they were a bit strong for my weak self.
I like the more mild and sweet ones... had some cuesta rey's which aren't all that bad. Maybe I'll venture off and try some of the ones talked bout on here.

Graycliff Crystal Toro 6x50

Cigars International blurb:
“Often compared to the beloved Ashton VSG, the Crystal Series is a bold, medium to full-bodied gem. Rated 90+ on more than one occasion, in addition to “Best of the Best” honors from Robb Report, this flavorful lovely combines a thick and oily Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper with a complex mixture of supremely aged long-fillers from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Honduras. As an added bonus, a rare strain of Grecian tobacco was carefully blended into this cigar, adding a lovely spice to the fray. After significant box-aging, the Crystal Series blankets the palate with bold, yet elegant flavors, including leather, earth, pepper, and a sweet aftertaste that complements the cigar’s rich core perfectly.
This just might be Graycliff’s most sophisticated handmade. “
Partnered with Johnny Walker Green
Setting: garage with dog, 101 F
Pre-light inspection:
Dark, slightly toothy wrapper with slightly grassy pre-light draw. Nothing remarkable nor nothing negative to report.
First 1/3
Cap cuts off easily with a twist & snip of the Palio cutter and reveals an even, smooth draw.
Fires right up with a torch and draw remains smooth.
http://ericloranger.com/CIMG2837.jpg
Earthy tones hit the palate with a thick smoke that's fun to roll around in the mouth. Finish has a hint of sweetness with a lingering spice. The JW Green is really brining out the spice in the finish. Working towards the end of the first third, the draw reveals the earth tones and leather building in intensity while keeping the slightly spicy, long finish. Ash has been holding firm and keeping the draw cool and very smooth.
2/3
Smoke gets richer, fuller in body. While still smooth, the spice is becoming more pronounced and it's very easy to pass the smoke though the nose. Heating up a little at the end of the second third but mostly likely because I'm smoking it a bit on the fast side. Ash refuses to drop but the burn line has gone from laser even to a slightly flowery edge. Nothing horrible, just an observation. Very relaxing smoke thus far and leaves my mouth with a little tingle.
http://ericloranger.com/CIMG2844.jpg
3/3
Ash finally dropped. Earth and leather have edged the spice out of the way on the draw. Finish reminds me of the warmth from jalapeño pepper oil on the tip on my tongue. The Crystal has that Graycliff flavor profile I can't quite place from the Original and Professional, just less of it. Maybe it's a bit fuller bodied and less grassy but I'm not good enough to tell you what that flavor profile is that isn't quite there. This smoke has gone though several subtle changes I wish I could tell you more about but again, my palate just isn't developed enough to describe them all to you.
Liked it: Yes
Buy again? Yes
Recommend? Yes, goes great on a full stomach. I enjoy the subtle changes all the way throughout this smoke and appreciate that it remains smooth to the nub.

Cigar: Camacho Coyolar Titan
Vitola: 6x60
Wrapper: Honduran
Binder: Honduran
Filler: Honduran
Price: Box is about $135 off CI. Got mine for significantly less on Cbid.
Setting: Sitting outside for this one. About 4:30pm 80 degrees out or so and a light cool breeze. Pairing with a Snapple Peach Tea.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0001.jpg
Pre-light. The cigar comes in cello and a nice simple black and gold band. The wrapper is medium brown, slighly mottled and fairly veiny. It is firm with a slight soft spot near the head but nothing to be concerned about. The cigar cut easily using the Cranial Screw Top method with the Palio. Typical free draw that already puts a tingle on the tongue. Smelling the foot is really sweet tobacco that belies what's about to come.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0006-3.jpg
First third: The cigar lit up easlily. This one strangely didn't start with the pepper blast I get from the perfectos. Maybe the length and girth of the cigar mellowed the initial blast. This cigar has also been in the humi for about ten months which may have mellowed it a bit. The ash is solid and white with some wave to the burn, but I'm gonna let it go to see if it becomes a problem. Ash dropped at a little over an inch in one big chunk. Body is in the medium range right now. The flavor is heavily of leather with a mild spice and some sweetness. Really different from the perfectos I've been having lately.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0010-2.jpg
Second third: Ok, now the spice is starting to pick up as is the body. The leather continues to dominate and the pepper is definitely there, but not the pepper bomb the smaller one is. As I neared the end of the first third the body really started picking up as well as the amount of smoke. The finish is really smooth with the lingering spice, but not thick or heavy feeling. The burn line has evened out and not required any touchups. The ash just seems to want to chunk off an inch at a time. About halfway through the stick a woody/earthy flavor starts coming into the background. There is also a faint bitterness but the good kind, definitely not unpleasant, just feel it at the side of the tongue. The funny thing is that though the leather dominates the flavor is constantly changing in the background making it an interesting and enjoyable cigar to smoke so far. The burn rate actually seems to be fast for such a large cigar. Usually a cigar this size it would take me over an hour to reach the halfway point and I'm here in about fortyfive minutes or so. The cigar seems to be pretty firmly packed so I'm a bit puzzled, but maybe the free draw has something to do with it?
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0014-3.jpg
Final third: Ah, here's the pepper bomb I was expecting. Odd, cause the prefecto starts out as a pepper bomb and smooths out where this seems to be doing the opposite. Body is in on the medium side of full, definitely not the super full that Camacho claims it is, though I am starting to feel the nic a tad. But this is my second cigar of the afternoon after a small lunch. The smoke in the second half has become really rich and creamy, though the finish is still not very thick or lingering.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd150/Rattersar15/Cigars/IMG_0020-1.jpg
Final Thoughs: Well, this is my first one since I bought the box ten months ago, I usually smoke the small perfectos, and this definitely wasn't what I was expecting. Overall I really enjoyed the cigar. The flavors were great and always interesting. The pepper/spice wasn't overpowering and I got a nice nic buzz. I think I'm gonna have to move the box from the back of the humidor. I was surprised at how quickly this smoked. An hour and a half total smoke time. I usually get another hour out of the Triple Maduro of the same size. But really a great smoke.
Smoke again: Yep
Buy again: Yep, when these run out, but not for msrp. But for a box under a hundred off cbid I sure will. Maybe a smaller size though.
Reccommend: Yep
