Those damned accidental wheelies during practice starts can be brutal! Sad to see a million dollar motorcycle melting.

But the little guy has little bones, so healing should be accelerated somewhat. During his time off, maybe he can catch up on those missed classes in charm school. If the break is really bad, that means there will be two more race wins up for grabs this year. Pedrosa always seems good for two at least.

Hard to forget that little dust-up in Portugal 2006. The PEDROSA MUST DIE posting on BARF after that race in a huge, bolded font still ranks among the best yet IMHO.

It would have been great if Spies could have made this year his rookie season in MotoGP. Suzuki needs three bikes on the grid and it is such a disadvantage for the U.S. riders who have to learn these tough tracks. But he belongs there with these other rippers. I agree, the field is just amazing and getting better. Can't wait for Qatar under the lights.

Valentino Rossi completed a mainly positive first day of testing in Malaysia today as the first of four pre-season tests began for the Fiat Yamaha Team. Rossi’s second test on Bridgestone tyres was interrupted when he crashed entering turn two on his twentieth lap of the day, but the Italian was unhurt and completed 44 laps and some important development work.

It was a typically hot and humid Sepang day and the track surface caused some problems with several riders, including Rossi’s new team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, also hitting the gravel at some point. Rossi and his team concentrated on a variety of things throughout the day as they continued to work on the development of the 2008 YZR-M1, recording positive results with a new 2008 specification pneumatic-valve engine, new electronics and of course some tyre work with Bridgestone. Rossi’s time of 2’02.490, recorded on his final lap of the day, put him in sixth place.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 6th Time: 2’02.490 Laps: 44
“It feels good to be back on the bike after the winter break, and me and all my team are feeling very motivated about the task ahead. I still have some pain in my hand but I had it checked out again last week and the fracture is okay, so I know it’s not a problem to ride. Today we continued where we left off with Bridgestone and it seems we’re making good progress, we did many laps with the same tyre and I’m pleased with things so far. Unfortunately I had a crash today; I was on an out lap and maybe I pushed a little bit too hard, too soon, with not enough temperature in the tyre and I lost the front. Luckily I was not hurt, my hand is okay and I was able to continue with the day’s work! As well as tyres we tried a new-spec engine and I was quite pleased with this, as well as with some new electronics. The surface wasn’t good today and it wasn’t possible to go so fast but I hope tomorrow it will improve and we will be able to keep improving in all areas.”

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
“It was unfortunate that Valentino crashed, as well as quite a few other riders, but he is fine, the bike was okay after some work and it didn’t interrupt things too much. The surface was quite poor and this caused problems for everyone but anyway we were able to get quite a lot of work done and overall it’s been a good first day, despite Valentino’s problem! Of course we’re working a lot with Bridgestone, continuing from the work we did in Jerez, and so far we seem to be going well. Tomorrow we might try a long-run and check the situation with the tyres over many laps, so this will be interesting.”

After being officially welcomed into the Yamaha fold at the Team’s presentation in Turin last week, Jorge Lorenzo was out on track in Fiat Yamaha Team colours for the first time today in Sepang. The three-day Malaysian test is the first of four pre-season tests before the Spanish rookie makes his MotoGP debut in March.

It was an interesting day for the Michelin-shod 20-year-old, who completed some promising work despite an incident at turn 13, when he lost the front and slid into the gravel. Like his team-mate Valentino Rossi, who suffered a similar fate, Lorenzo was entirely unhurt and was back out on his second bike almost immediately. He completed 43 laps on a scorching Sepang day, trying out a new 2008-specification engine and also some new electronics, registering improvements with both. The Michelin rider stayed on base tyres today and will begin tyre-testing tomorrow as he continues in his task of getting to grips with his new YZR-M1. His time of 2’02.563 was good enough for ninth place. Randy de Puniet was fastest today after recording a lap of 2’01.377.

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 9th Time: 2’02.563 Laps: 43
“Unfortunately I lost the front and crashed at turn 13 but it wasn’t a big fall and I wasn’t hurt at all. I went back to the pits and went out on my other bike, forgot about the problem and started improving straight away! In this way it was a positive day for me. We had the chance to test a new engine, with which I found to be an improvement compared to the previous one, and we also worked on some new electronics. I still need to improve some things about my riding style, and we need to work on the bike in the hard braking areas because I am lacking some stability there. Today we didn’t change anything with the tyres but tomorrow we will start some tyre testing with Michelin.”

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
“Luckily Jorge wasn’t hurt so despite his crash it was a good day’s work for us. We continued with the base set-up we had in Jerez, where he was quite fast, and it seems to work okay. The main area we need to work on is the hard braking areas, where we still have some vibration, so we need to concentrate on improving the bike for those parts of the track. We tried a new-specification engine and some new electronics and Jorge felt very comfortable with these. Tomorrow we will continue with general set-up work and also start testing new tyres with Michelin; we have a lot to do but so far things are going quite well.”

First day of action for new-look Tech 3 in Sepang

The Yamaha Tech 3 MotoGP team began their 2008 campaign under hot Malaysian sun at the Sepang circuit today for the first of three days of testing. New riders James Toseland, the 2007 World Superbike champion, and Colin Edwards, a former two-time Superbike number one, completed 74 laps between them and posted best lap-times to rest 13th and 7th respectively from a full complement of MotoGP teams and riders.

The first shakedown test of the year saw the Briton and American getting re-accustomed to their machinery after two sessions towards the end of 2007 and before the forced winter break. The pair worked on the data accumulated last time at Sepang and Jerez in Spain to begin building the competitive basis of their M1 motorcycle for this season.

Colin Edwards - Position: 7th Time: 2:02.549 Laps: 29
“We are not quite on the new stuff yet but we are slowly morphing into the next version; we will have a new chassis for tomorrow,” commented Edwards who rounded the fast layout for 29 laps and is currently preparing for his fourth season with Yamaha in MotoGP. “We started out getting the setting right and backing up what we found out from the last November test. Everything went well in the morning. We did not test anything special from Michelin but more the good tyres we had selected from the last outing.”

Edwards was third quickest early on but relentless sunshine baked the asphalt in the afternoon and caused some problems, even prompting a slow-speed spill for the Texan. “After lunch the temperature on the ground went up to sixty degrees or something crazy like that and then things became difficult,” he recounted. “It was hard to stop the bike and I had perhaps the most stupid crash I’ve ever done. I was braking for the hair-pin and the bike stepped sideways. I tried to manage it straight, but it flicked back again and high-sided me in a straight-line. I was fine and the bike was the one we were going to change the chassis on anyway. We still have some work ahead.”

Toseland –a MotoGP debutant and the only British rider in the premier class of the world championship – understandably circulated the breezy but sizzling Sepang circuit for as much track mileage as possible. He lapped 45 times in what was his third outing on the Yamaha M1.

James Toseland - Position: 13th Time: 2:03.264 Laps: 45
“Today was pretty good even if it did take me a bit of time to get back into things after the break. My quickest time here in November was 2:03.5 and then I was mostly in the 04s and 05s. On my last run today, when the track was at its hottest, I was constantly in the low 03s, so we have made progress and I am pretty pleased with that,” he said. “We have got some new forks which are quite stable under braking,” he added. “Along with an increase in engine performance this is the main thing that I noticed compared to the old bike. The new rear swinging arm was working well and I did not feel as much chatter around this track as I did before. The bike is not hugely different so far but the subtle changes are a step in the right direction.”

With all the manufacturers on the 2008 MotoGP grid represented at Sepang, the test gave the team a decent chance to set their benchmarks against the opposition they will battle through the eighteen round calendar that begins on March 9th in Qatar. The French crew will continue work on Wednesday and Thursday before shipping out to Phillip Island in Australia for further development next week.

As the British commentators love to say, "it's early days".

Edwards said that they don't have all the new 2008 tech., which Lorenzo and Rossi are already testing. De Puniet is consistently fast and a crasher (but so was Stoner).

I've been an Edwards fan for a long time but I've lost hope for him doing anything in GP. It seems like every year he does well in testing, but never gets the job done during the race.

Too true! I personally thought that he should have gone back to WSBK this year, but that is just selfish thinking on my part because I'd like to see him in the mix with Bayliss again! This past year saw many of the best racing in WSBK and I expect 2008 to be much of the same, Edwards would have only made it better and it would have put him in the winners circle far more frequently than he is likely to experience in MotoGP!

Maybe Edwards will do better during the actual racing now that he's been demoted to a satellite team and nobody expects anything out of him. Can't be any good for your confidence to have Rossi as a teammate.

This photo (not sure who the photog is, my apologies) shows another angle likely after the cloud of gas vapour went WHOOMPHHH! and the CW in the referenced photo getting the fuck out of Dodge. Judging by the wires dangling from his head, he's either a hardcore Rasta or was on Comm with a headset hence the mic on his face.

These guys *thought* they put the fire out, but wouldn't you know it, when you lift up a bike off the ground and onto it's wheels, the fuel is going to drain out onto the hot exhaust pipes. Voila, instant Satay. These guys ended up fine, just singed eyebrows. Those are sunglasses coming off his face. First mistake was coming in towards the machine and not smelling the race fuel . . . . because believe me, that stuff is potent! For all you CW's out there, keep up the good work and leave the burnt roaches to roast for a while after you've put out the flames. I don't think Honda will run the pneumatic valve engine if they can't get it straight. By the time pre-season tesing is done they will have it sorted.

Why should he have gone to Ducati?? Stoner is the only fast guy on the Duc....look where Melandri is on the chart. Sure, it is early in testing, but HRC will step up and I think it is silly to give Ducati tooo much credit, Stoner won that championship, not the bike he was riding. The way he rode last year they could have put him on a 250 and he would have been up there. This will be a great season, lots of talented "name" riders, hopefully it will not be a landslide for anyone this year.

this is why I wear cotton when corner working

synthetics like nylon and polypropylene do a great job of wicking sweat and keeping you comfortable on a hot day but when exposed to a flash burn they melt, stick to the skin and cause nasty burns

Four Yamaha bikes in the top eight is the biggest news. Maybe they are finally going to make this bike competitive after all - sure hope so as it will make for much more interesting racing this year. If Edwards can make something happen, though doubtful, he'll be the most sought after autobiographer in the MotoGP pits.

And the whole Ducati thing remains mystifying. Though he is not the most consistent guy out there, I believe that Melandri is among the top three in terms of sheer racing talent. Yet he joins what is becoming a pretty long list of guys who just cannot make the Ducati work for them - including Capirossi! But it is early days still.

The one variable not factored in is the relative lack of grip that everybody was mentioning at Sepang. The next test will reveal more, but kudos to Nicky, Edwards and and Hopper! Three Yanks in the top 5, each with a different manufacturer. 2008 could be great.

Hmmm...interesting stuff.

Take those top four finishers in the Sepang test in 2007 and compare their results with the final 2007 standings. Three out of the four finished in the top four spots - only Stoner did not show up, probably because he had barely ridden the Ducati at all by then. And Vermeulen finished 5th in the test and 6th in the championship.

I'm hoping (without hope, because it won't happen with a multi-million-dollar GP contract) that he runs the Indy Mile race prior to the GP in Indianapolis in September. But I can dream...

He had a great test. A slow start, but he had to shoulder the majority of duties when Dani got broken at the end of Tuesday. He ran 25% more laps than the next closest rider. Ironman stuff.

Yep, he is an exciting racer to watch. He may not be the best in MotoGP, nor the most talented or the smartest or certainly not the favorite, but he wants it as bad as anybody out there. The final race of 2006 he would definitely have won, even if Rossi didn't pitch it early. The situation going into that race was one of the best and most exciting of all time at the top level of roadracing. Not his fault that he was handed the championship.

Besides, he is never going to run away from the field and make for a boring race or a boring championship. Oh yeah, and he is an American and sounds like a pretty good kid! I was lucky enough to be at Laguna when he won his first GP. Definitely rooting for Nicky every race, he is a ballsy rider.

Racing at that level borders on the superhuman, every one of those riders are bona fide stars. I'm still in awe of Cory Call, Ken, Michael Earnest, Stanton and all those local guys, but even they would all be absolutely humbled by any of the top MotoGP or WSBK racers. Hell yes, if Nicky can compete with the likes of Rossi and Stoner, the least I can do is cheer him on.

Pneumatic valves means higher revs can be achieved.
Reducing the number of moving parts that can fail is good engineering. Racing engines often failed at high speeds because mechanical springs were unable to close valves fast enough, leading to engine failure when pistons struck incompletely closed valves. Renault's innovation was to replace steel springs with light weight compressed air bellows that could respond more quickly and reduce the possibility of valve crashes, other than from leaking bellows. Additionally, the amount of seat tension required to keep a coil sprung valve under control results in peak lift loading drastically higher, with added stress to the entire valvetrain as a result. Pneumatic systems, sharing a common reservoir of pressure retain a more static level of force, controlling the valve effectively, without any attendant peak lift load increase. To avoid bellows failures, air springs are replaced often.

Tech 3 doesn't have the new motor, only Fiat Yam...pneumatic valves refers to using air pressure to the close of the valve instead of a valve spring, the camshafts still open the valves.

I believe Renault was experimenting with solenoid actuated valves for F1 engines a few years ago, which did away with the cams, but they couldn't get it as reliable as a camshaft, IIRC

Yeah, but Hayden set his fastest time with the old engine, not the pneumatic valve engine he's supposed to race this year.

he probably means it has never been beneficial because Nicky rides like a dirtracker. All the rest of the guys ride the front end. Nicky stiffens up the rear to artificially bring "feel" to the front end that's not there. He wants the back end to be loose but short wheelbases and the chassis design of these bikes don't allow them to be fast like that or they severely shred the rear tire like Nicky did a few times last season.

when you have someone that's riding the bike in a way that it doesn't want to be ridden, and he's setting up the bike and requesting changes be made according to his style, of course a more modern style euro rider isn't going to be compatible with it.

My point about Hayden moving to Ducati was that HRC doesn't seem to be giving him their full support (I know, I know, :deadhorse) and they didn't have a very competitive motorcycle at all last year. In fact, it was probably the fourth best bike behind the Suzuki. Pedrosa did well in the end, but when you consider how many bikes Honda puts on the grid they were probably expecting to win more races.

Stoner was the best rider last year, and he proved that he could race with and beat anyone, including Rossi, but he also had what was clearly the best motorcycle. The combination of the two allowed him to absolutely dominate. Capirossi managed to pull out a win and Barros on the Pramac team had some good results too.

I only watch baseball and motorcycle racing and this part of the year is dead to me as far as sports go. Can't wait for the season to start.

So, who's your source, Var?

my source? just riding backround of Nicky Hayden, commentary during gp races on his riding style for the past 2 years , reading articles on the internet, and all the info given about the chassis differences between the 990 and the 800 gp bikes, and how the 800s ride like bigger 250s and the 990s were closer to WSBK dimensions.

I COULD be way off base, but it makes a lot of sense. The Euro riders, mostly the guys that come off of the 250 gp bikes(a lot of the top talent out there) don't ride bikes sideways. They base their riding around the front tire and get used to sliding the front controllably and get really good at riding at the edge.
