Well, I was putting a new PC for my brother. I've installed window XP Pro and it ran perfect. That is untill I tried to plug in a friggin neon light while the PC was running. The whole thing turned off!!!!

I tried to install windows again and it'd takes forever to boot, and never seem to want to install windows. Sometimes it takes a long time to boot, sometime it doesn't boot. One time I saw a message saying something about a missing BOOTMGR file though...

Anyone has any idea...I've been at it for couple of days now...not sure what's going on :nerd

Never, ever plug or unplug any electrical component on a running PC. :shame

Did you used to have another OS, maybe Vista, loaded on that drive before?

I would reboot the PC, go into the BIOS, and reset to Default settings, then see if that works. If that doesn't work, I would delete the drive partitions, recreate them, then reload Windows.

I second that.

If you have a second computer, take out the HDD and plug it into (as a slave) that one (while it is turned off :wtf) and see if you can get any of your files off of there first.

It sounded like he had set this machine up very recently, and wanted to add the last piece of gay neon bling when it went tits up. :laughing

So I'm assuming there is no data on it and wasn't worth jacking around with trying to fix the boot problem.

Yeah, I did have Vista ultimate on there right before, but I did install XP later and it ran perfect though:confused

Am I good or what? :teeth

You can install the Recovery Console from the XP CD by booting from the CD then select "R" to run the Recovery Console. Then type FixMBR. This will create a new boot code.

i think you have to reinstall windows. i remeber in win 98se disc you could choose a "repair" option when booting form cd. its sounds like a critical file is corrupted or missing and needs to be reinstalled before your comp can boot into windows again.

if you really think its the mobo try using a linux live cd. if it boots into that your mobo is fine.

Sounds to me like a typical failure. Under Win XP the same shit would have gave you a NTLDR failure. Which you can do the MBR fix.

next time you go to play with hardware.. shut her down first. :thumbup
