WM6 specifically if it matters for apps.
also is it possible to download a map of SF or surrounding areas? i don't want to have to login to google maps everytime i wanna check it out or buy a GPS
oh ya and any free hotspots around the city i should be aware of? i don't want a tmobile acct for *$ or use my nonexistent data plan.

The newest version uses cell tower triangulation to approximate your location, no GPS needed.

every time i use google maps on my phone, it tells me i need a data connection
it will tell me how close i am to a tower (w/in 700ft) but that's not what i want to look at

no data plan as of yet. i'm currently paying 1/5 of what AT&T charges for their unlimited plan so i'm not quite ready to fork over that much
i don't surf around that often. at least when i'm out and about

I didn't take the plunge on data for about a year after picking up a Blackberry.
I too don't suft much with it as I don't generally need to while mobile. However, the usefulness of Google maps with it's live traffic information, push email and Google calendar make it more than worth the $20 extra Tmobile gets for it.
Not trying to sell you, but having a data plan on your smartphone completes the package big time.

I agree with having the Data Plan, but AT&T wants $39.95 for the plan unless you can get someone who works for AT&T to hook you up for the $20 price. ;)

haha...or buy an iPhone...my iPhone plan with unlimited data and 200 text was only around $10 more than I had been paying on my standard phone with something like 1mb/month...it was a big factor in my switching phones. What a heap of crap...then, add on text messaging...are you kidding me? :x

Anyone know if there's any OCR applications for PPC/WM6? I tend to think that camera phones pretty much suck beyond being useful, but if I can snap a picture of an article and have it dump that into a text file, that would be an incredibly useful feature.

you can d/l the super old version of MS maps on it and dl their old maps. I used to use it on my old ppc and it was awesome since it was a small app.

The PDA phone will create a ringtone of the 1st 30 secs of a song if you Click and hold a MP3 file. You would have to cut the song if you want a different portion as a ringtone.

In the absence of something native, you could look for web apps that will do the same (or write your own...I know there's a free OCR library out there somewhere)

I'll check around.
I did find and use this cool app that uses the camera to read bar codes off the computer screen. It used them to send the PDA's browser to a file on a website. :nerd
I don't think a 1.3 MP camera has the resolution to resolve a full page of characters though. Maybe a couple of paragraphs. My desktop scanner doesn't do that great of a job in translating OCR, and it has a very high resolution.

You've got to have a data plan to really get the most out of your smartphone. And if you do intend on runnung Google Maps, better suck it up and get the Unlimited plan.
