:thumbup Though be sure to check the total of blocked IP's after you update as I've noticed PG2 sometimes downloads blank lists.

I have it on my wife's Laptop, but I like BitComet better. What's the dealio with uTorrent, that I'm missing?

Bandwidth throttling, and scheduling are my two favorite features, scheduling being top. Plus, it's super super small size and resource footprint. I run it 24/7 on an old Dell desktop acting as our home file/print server and it sits quietly running while any other processes plug away as normal.

You can schedule utorrent to turn itself on and off and different hours of the day on different days of the week. I have it running WFO at night when were sleeping and either throttled or off during expected user usage hours.

On my DSL line, torrent DL/UL can suck up a ton of bandwidth making for a poor user experience for others on the LAN.

Definately worth a try.

I was thinking about using it as a server too, but didn't think it was possible. How do you access file from other locations?

After sharing the directory where you saved the torrents, you map a drive to the server machine from the PC you are using. You do that from My Computer or File Explorer.

Bumping the thread cuz i have a question...

Dont people get arrested and stuff for downloading torrents? I keep hearing horror stories of people getting caught and what not?

How do you prevent getting caught?

Never heard of anyone being busted or arrested for downloading torrents, unless they were doing it on a school network.

My understanding is that they generally go after the original seeders.

People getting "busted" are not using torrents. They are using programs like Kazzaa and other crap.

If I remember correctly, I only once saw a story about a person getting served papers that was using torrents...:dunno

Plus, they can't prove it was you downloading the content anyway. Last time I checked, people weren't IP addresses.:laughing

My friend got a letter from Comcast saying FOX contacted them with a list of all the episodes of House he had been downloading. In the letter they say that they will disable his comcast account (for life) the next time it happens. It's just not worth it.

Note: he's a leecher, he doesn't seed once the download is complete.

not sure if this is accurate. but i remember reading somewhere about companies putting out fake torrents so they can track who tries to download it. Kind of an undercover thing.

I just download from well known established seeders.

You can watch all their shows for free on their website, so why would they have heartburn on torrent D/L's?

Because you don't watch the ads if you download the torrent.

1) Your friend's an asshole. If you only take and don't give back, the system doesn't sustain itself

2) He's also a twit, those episodes are available for free on Fox's website.

I got contacted by my ISP twice. My roomate uses U-torrent and downlaods from mininova.com

We got a letter saying the would discontinue our internet account if any "illegal copyrighted material downloads" continued to occur.

One was from Activision, and one was from Paramount.

I use BitTyrant and usually get my torrents off piratebay.
I got a shitload of Paramount stuff, and they never contacted me about my downloads. So be careful on what you download.

I guess the real thing to be said is, Be careful WHERE you download from.

Charter

That was an illegal thing for them to do. ISPs can't give out customer's information without police intervention.

Thats not how it works. When you use bit torrents any peers or seeders you connect to can see what your ip is. Companies connect to these torrents, take lists on IPs then contact the corresponding ISP service and tell them of such activities. The ISP never gives any customer information out, at least I do not believe so, although I could be wrong.

I believe it depends on the company, some have you sign away this privilege when you agree to their terms of service. But before they contact you they usually download a piece of the file you're seeding as proof that you were providing the file to others, just your IP on the list doesn't show you are actively participating.

If you continue to seed then they can get a court order to make your ISP provide the information even if your ISP says they won't give it out normally.

At least thats my understanding of the whole thing.

Well yeah, thats how they get your IP. But they can't get your email or mailing address from it without the ISP providing it to them.

They don't. The ISP is the one sending the message on behalf of the copyright holder.

From my wanderings on the net, pretty much all of them except the ultra private trackers. But I've yet to get an account with any of them.
