Hi,

I am looking to prepare a KLX 110 for SMRRA racing. My son who is 11 would like to try pavement racing. He is an experienced dirt rider that rides a KX65 in the dirt and his KLX 110 for dry flat track type riding at Prairie City. I would like to use the KLX 110 because it's power is probably more manageable on pavement and I don't want to mod the KX65. There are a couple of things that I need to make this happen.

1. I need a leather racing suit that will fit a slim 11 y/o that is about 4'5". Preferably used to save money. :cool

2. I need sliders for at least the handle bar ends and fold up pegs.
I plan to use http://www.supermotoengineering.com/home.php
That Matt suggested in the slider posts.

3. Tires. I am on the fence on this one. I need to understand the benefit to going to the 12" front wheel. Also I don't know where to look for such a wheel or how much it would cost. So if I choose to use the 14/12 combination. I have found some tires at this site http://www.gianniniracing.com/
that offer Vee racing tires in the 14/12 combo. Does anyone know of this brand? Are there any other options?

Thanks,
Scott

I plan on purchasing a couple suits so kids can demo some of the rides and see if they like road racing.

I have not done this yet, but I will consider your son's size and once I have the suits in hand I will send you a PM.

You can try them on and I can offer you a way to purchase them online from a well known vendor. They are name brand suits and the price will be fair.

P.S.
If you decide on the 12" rims, I can bring out some 12" take offs that are no good for racing or serious practice but will work for getting the feel for things.

Me and my brother just finished setting up a DS80 for my nephew. We are taking him to his first day on the 24th at Stockton. We went to TAP plastics and bought some 1" delrin. It was 12 bucks for 2 feet which was way too much.I think we used less than a foot.I welded threaded inserts in to the bars and countersunk holes into the delrin. We drilled 5/16" holes in the swingarm and bolted 1 1/2" long pieces of the delrin to it.The front we made a bracket that comes off of the axle to bolt more delrin too.As far as the pegs,I welded a piece of flat stock to the bottom part of the peg, ground it smooth and drilled a hole through it.We cut some 3/4" pieces of delrin, drilled and bolted them up and the bike is done.I drove to the track(less than 10 miles from me:teeth)and asked Matt a few questions regarding the safety equipment. My nephew rides dirt and he has all of that gear.He said it would be fine as long as he has good gloves but he suggested leathers. We really don't want to invest a bunch of money right now because he's just trying the supermoto thing right now.If he gets more serious, his parents can buy him some leathers. We also drilled the oil drain bolt and safety wired it.You'll have to have a catch can for the fuel overflow.I looked at Matt's set up and he had a plastic bottle zip tied to the frame.I'm more excited to get him out there than I was at my first track day.Hope to see you out there.Oh yeah,I forgot to mention that Matt is a cool dude.He was very helpful with my questions.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. :teeth

Do you think it's necessary to switch to a 12" front wheel?
This will probably be a big expense, and I want to avoid it if the the benefit is small.

Thanks,
Scott

We're keeping the 14" front for now.If he wants to continue,we'll maybe get a set of 12" wheels for his YZ85 and switch back and forth.I found some good(cheap)12' scooter tires on tiresunlimited.com for his current rear. They are Chengshin and only 24 bucks.I found a supermoto specific 14" for the front on pocketbikeparts.com.It's 2.5x14 Qing and standard on some cheap mini motards. They have them and stock and they are only 25 bucks plus shipping.Like I said,we are trying to go cheap right now to see if he stays interested in the motards. If so,we'll convert his new bike.

There are tires that will work on the asphalt that are not 12".

I may be mistaken since I am just going off of memory. Maybe someone can chime in if I am wrong but the only way to make a STOCK KLX competitive is to race it against other 12" wheeled bikes. A larger wheel would disqualify a stock KLX.

If you want to just go out for practices, you could easily mount some tires and just practice.

If you are trying to race then you need to consider other options.

In other words, a stock KLX will not be competitive in Mod Thunder. Even if you could make up for the lack of horsepower, you would fall short in the suspension.

12” Bridgestone and Dunlop tires are top notch race rubber when it comes to minis.

Thanks, so it sounds like I need to go to the 12" wheel.

Hey Mike, isn't there a wider rim available now. I thought I remember a guy back east that was into building up the 65, etc. He mentioned a wider rim that would allow you to mount the larger 12" tire. In other words you could mount a 120/80/12 without a problem.

The guy I am thinking of might be involved with the national mini deal somehow.

I'll take some tomorrow and post them. They really weren't that difficult to make and this thing needs to be as low budget as possible. He might go out there and not want to ride pavement for all I know.I'm not going to invest 1,000 bucks in a 300 dollar bike .Here's some blurry pics, but you get the idea.

Hi Scott,

My son (8) runs a 2004 NSR50 at SMRRC. We will be out at the track on the 24th and your boy is welcome to try this bike out. The NSR is a great trainer/racing bike, there are alot of them to race against and they can be found ready to race used for around $1400-2000.

My son also races his kx65 and it is also a great bike to race. His is lowered so I don't think it will be a good fit for your boy,but he's welcome to try it also.

Hotrod, this goes for your nephew and anybody else that wants to check it out.

Kids love this stuff-get ready!

Come on out and ask for Vision. We won't be hard to find.

John.

Wow,that's pretty damn cool. Thanks for offering up your bike.Only in the motorcycling world you find people this cool. His DS is done so he should be set for a ride.I have a feeling once he does this,he'll be wanting to convert his new bike to a motard. Then his mom will be pissed at me.I'll come by and say hi on the 24th.

John,

Hey, I agree with Harry, that's very cool. We have read all about Vision! :teeth We will be out on the 24th. It may be that a NSR 50 makes more sense. I have been looking high and low for wheels for the KLX 110 and it seems that it will cost about $500 minimum for a new set-up. That's a lot to find out if he likes pavement racing or not.

sorry for thsi spam I think I can help this guy...

At my shop I have a spare front 110 wheel I can sell you fairly cheap. And you can or we can get you a 12 inch front wheel hoop for it to have a 12 x 12 set up and be more SM style..

I had been thinking about doing this on my own 110 but now it is all custom and I have our fastMinis speed forks and a whole kx 65 front wheel and brake set up on it... Lost of ways to do... if you want we can set that whole bike up for you... turn key... If you want to do this just pm me...

btw I (We) can make you all needed sliders I am sure as well...

Seesm,

I plan to attend the Feb 24 practice first, investigate bikes for sale before I proceed with modifying the KLX110. I will keep you in mind though.
