Vista Ultimate here...nothing major to gripe about..nothing major to fawn about. Its been pretty stable for me, and i game alot on it. Macs are for girls anyways. hehe

The HP laptop I bought last year came preloaded with Vista. Not too bad, 90% of the stuff I had on XP works on Vista...the only bad thing is that the majority of PC games won't play on the latter OS. :(

Pretty stable most of the time.

I run it on my desktop. It's fine. I'm noticing that a lot of people who don't like it are running it on lower-end hardware.

I dual boot Vista and XP. 98% of the time I use XP.

Vista is fun for when I want to see how useless DX10 still is.

Vista64 on my gaming machine at home. not a single issue so far with O/S, but then I only game on it, and the hardware is high-ish end, so...

I am having some strangeness with the second vid card I have installed, but that might just be a driver issue. 2 Monitors, FTW lol

(and for those scratching their head on why I used Vista64, because I wanted to, and being a techy-type I need to get familiar with it for work)

Vista64 I "do" have complaints about. I tried to run that first and I had a bunch of problems with 32 bit programs getting rejected by the OS for one thing or another. Is it better now? This was about 9 months ago.

4GB :thumbup

MtnRacer - I just have games and such installed on it, not many 'work' apps. I do have Office 2003 I might install, but so far no problems with the few apps I do have. Trillian, Teamspeak, Vent, Acdsee pro etc. All function fine. Itunes/Quicktime had some issues, but Apple recently updated those for 64bit Vista. I dont use itunes on it much anyway, all my music is on my Mac Book Pro

what programs specifically? If I have access to them I can try loading and see what happens

3gb actually. I have 3gb in my quad core, if i put 4 in it won't boot...but the system in 32 bit only recognizes less than 3gb of virtual memory. 64 bit yeah you can go 4+gb ram but there are no real apps that you need to run 4gb or more unless you're doing some really hard core stuff

Oh ok, thanks. :thumbup I was having a lot of problems with the utilities I normally use, most of which are made by smaller vendors. Surprisingly, I thought I'd have the most problems with games, but even in 64 bit, everything worked great.

Steve

P.S. Hey Danielle, first thing's first: Find a friend who's computer savvy and have him/her go over your machine and optimize it. That means this should start with a format and a reinstall of Vista. Out of the box installs rarely fit the needs of the user or the capabilities of the machine they're installed on. Then find a tweak guide (Like this one (http://tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/index.htm)) and have them trim some of the fat off of Vista's processing. Your machine will run faster and with far fewer nuisances than it did as shipped to you. The first time I bought a preconfigured machine (first and ONLY :rant) it was a nightmare trying to get the OEM install running right. Quick format and reinstall with some tweaking and it ran right as rain. FYI. ;)

Mac is WAY overpriced garbage. If you're like me and just abotu ready to give up completely on Windows, do yourself a favor and use Linux. I still have XP at home, I have Vista at the office and I hate it. It's a huge resource hog and the driver issues you've mentioned have been a pain, as has software compatibility. I'm sure within a year all the softs will update to Vista friendly, but I don't like what Windows is doing with licensing stuff so I'm abotu to chuck it anyway. I think the only nazis more twisted than Windows about licensing is the Mac people.

I see myself getting fed up and being a non-OSX UNIX only user by '09.

+10000 Ubuntu 7.04 & 7.10, Redhat enterprise, Suse, are all incredibly stable, very efficient O.S. I use Ubuntu exclusively at home and my non-techie girlfriend has no problems with it at all.

It's SO good in fact, most people who use my PC at home don't even realize they're not using windows.

MSFT has caused a lot of consternation lately by saying they won't support XP after 6/30/08.

I for one already have my XP machine turn to shit anytime somebody outside sends me a file or meeting etc from Vista.

Mac is no better, they all expect you to buy entirely new computer setups hardware/software every GD couple years like the shits disposable or something.

I bought my desktop with Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed on it. I've used it everyday for maybe half a year. Before that, I was on Mandrake.

Ubuntu is much less stable than Windows, takes longer to boot, and sucks balls at Wifi (which is why I had to install Vista). It is also much more demanding as far as setting it up goes. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a novice/1st time user (*assumption*) who is asking about how Vista compares to XP SP2. Vista will be easier to use, more stable, more compatible, and support all the popular applications we're used to.

Now if you're a developer, cheap, or just feeling adventurous, it's certainly worth a try. Ubuntu comes on a Live CD so you can try it out without installing it.

If you have an XP disc, none of this would be a problem.

I have Vista Enterprise but run XP Pro SP2 almost all the time. Only reason for Vista for me is to run DX10 games, which there arent' many out right now.

As for the MS office thing, there is a file converter, google it.

My vista sees 3.25GB of RAM, not 2, but I would imagine that number will go down if I'm running something like 4 SAS drives on a PERC.

My question, and I know this is not related to this thread but kind of goes along the same lines of this thread.

Exchange 2007, yay or nay? Is it too early to upgrade? Anyone out there running it in their business? I really don't feel like shelling out the big bucks to be a guinea pig.

I'm almost wondering if your post was just a bash on linux or you never bothered to do any updates for drivers. :confused

I've done a few network setups now with and without wi-fi. OS Flavors ranging from: XP, 2000, Vista & Ubuntu. Vista was by far the biggest piece of shit of the bunch. Also I have built quite a few ubuntu boxes. All of them have been FAR more stable then ANY windows box I have built. Including my current PC with a Dual Boot of XP Corp SP2, and Ubuntu 7.10 64bit.

I will however state, patience is a virtue with ANY flavor of linux, and making sure that you have the correct driver for the build is essential.

Pulled from my rant on my website:
Any "run as is out of the box" software that must be "hacked" out of the box... Should be burned alive. What a miserable POS this software is.

I went over to a friends house this morning to do a simple task. Drop in a Belkin Wireless Router to their already existing network.

Normally you would think this wouldnt be an normally brain tasking thing to do... Well up until the adding the vista loaded laptop to it.. It wasn't. Even the fucking PS3 and Xbox configured faster.

So after an hour of fucking around with vista, I used an XP desktop in the house to go online. After about 10 minutes I ran across this....

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

What a fucking miserable POS vista is. Fuck You MicroSuck. :finger: What a load of bullshit this is... :rant
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
I was wondering if infact where i was, why there were NO wireless devices. And then I thought to myself. Ya fucking right... This is SJ, and there's TONS of people here. There has to be atleast a half dozen.

So after doing microsofts little "registry hack" BAM 14 fucking wireless networks, including my target network came up. What a fucking basket case that is.

Other than a couple problems trying to transfer information from and external hard drive, and a motherboard issue, vista has worked great on my gaming computer. Runs quick, been pretty stable, and haven't really had any connectivity problems. I have it on my laptop too, and while it's been very stable and never crashed, it runs way slower than xp did on my last laptop, even though the current one has better hardware. Overall though I'm happy with it.

how bad is it to get a *ahem* less than legit copy? as far as activation and such are concerned?

i recently got a new laptop and it's preloaded w/ crap from hp and i'd like to have a fresh unaltered copy installed. they did away with even recovery discs and now has a "recovery partition"

or should i attempt installing XP on it?

it's currently running smoothly but there will come a time when i will need to start fresh

also are there any tweaks for it to run faster? already set to classic, noguiboot, etc

What version of Ghost did you guys use? We tried Ghost 8-11 (legacy versions) and they all had issues, from creating only corrupt images, to not seeing the drives, to simply refusing to make an image, to creating a non functioning image.

Hmm. Let's see...

Ghostcast server 11.0.0.1502.

We did experience the usual problems when one of our techs did not correctly prepare a couple of the workstations for ghosting. This in turn stopped the entire process until we could locate the faulty units. Other than that, it worked fine. Your experience sounds miserable - let us know how it goes.

What's with people always using VAIOs as comparisons with Macbooks? Is it because they are similarly pretty and overpriced? Meh.

BTW, Windoze boxes CAN run OS X, although with some trickeration and magic.

The fact is, there is not a 'cheapest system' version of a Mac, just as there is not a Mercedes that competes with Kia. If you want cheap shit, Dell will be more than happy to toss together a box for you. :laughing

BTW - Dell Austin factory closing, jobs being cut. Cheap, cheap, cheap has its costs too. Competing solely on price means compromising on components, build quality and adding a boatload of crapware to drive marketing money.

Our old G4 runs the latest OS X. No need to upgrade to 4 GB of RAM just to run a freaking OS. I was a big Windows guy, gaming fanatic that built my own systems and worked at Alienware. I look back in wonder at all the time I wasted cleaning and optimizing systems instead of USING them to do stuff.

Try an OS X system for a couple of days. You'll have a hard time going back to Windows.

I have 3 machines at work that I use on daily basis. Windows 2003 Server, Linux (Ubuntu), iMac since I do require every single one of them to work and while I don't disagree with mac os not being great I would say it is not the greatest thing like you are making it sound.

I run it on my desktop. It's fine. I'm noticing that a lot of people who don't like it are running it on lower-end hardware.

Steve

I'm running the latest version of MacOS X on a 7-year old G4.

I have to say, I was pretty damn impressed Leopard even installed let alone allow me to drive a 1080p TV and run as a media, Time Machine, iTunes server.

Macs FTW.

I bought my laptop about a year and a half ago, and it came with XP, thank god, and a free upgrade to vista which came in the mail. I haven't even unwrapped the cd, because i knew it would piss me off. sheer intuition, nothing more. I didn't know anything about vista when it first came out, but i knew it would piss me off. i'm sooo glad i'm not stuck with it, haha!

I'm not a big fun of vista, but works well for me(I'm a Linux User). It has a lot of bugs and is not stable yet. After its release, I'm more like into it. New drivers and update can be found, and most of the problems are being and are going to be solved. I believe if you want to run Vista, you must have good specs or if you upgrade your computer from XP to Vista, upgrading some of your hardware should be recommended for performance satisfaction. Experiencing Vista could be awesome if you have enough hardware required to run it . It is a new OS and its operation can't be compared to it's long developed friend XP. However, new drivers and updates are coming, choosing the right ones will allow you to have a better OS and performance as well. I tried 32-bit ultimate, 64-ultimate, and 64-bit Business. Personally, I like 64-bit Ultimate I found out that it is a more open environment that XP was. Modification to your OS can be done in someway now, so you can personalize your environment to your way. But not enough like Unix/Linux. when the Vista release came out, I install it and got disappointed. However, it is being a while I just like it. It is just my opinion.... if someone has a different one it is cool... but don't blame about what I found out.:teeth

+1K... If you want to pay.. Linux Mandriva Powerpack2008(http://store.mandriva.com/product_info.php?products_id=388&osCsid=10203461d0ca4f15d9716e2c1fd7bcc6)... Awesome deal for newbies.... it has the look of Windows, it is stable, drivers for almost all your hardware... if anyone wants a copy for free...pme

I neglected to mention the inferior graphics card on the Sony.

ha ha ha. ya i noticed that right off the bat being a gamer and all. hahaah silly mac fan boys

oh yah and if you buy sony laptops.. or computers.. your a tool... Dell sells cheap laptops ..

By the way.. in the last month or so i had my experience with vista ultimate.

I installed it.. it was ok. The look the feel is great... new.. fresh.. I liked it. However it took me a while to get use to the changes. For example the address bar is there and it serves the same function but when ur browing through folders you dont see the "\" you see a right arrow tringanle. Even the stuff i was sooo familiar with like enabling the ability to view hidden folders. I did it once.. it took me a while and i didnt try it again. The main thing that pissed me off was that stupid window that asked me for EVERYTHING to confirm. When i delete somethinng.. the windows would stop everything bring up a window that i had to acknowledge with a yes or a no.. even for installing.. i was like "YA BITCH I WANT TO DELETE IT!" .. i couldnt find the function to turn that off.. i was told you could.

the new windows glide look is awesome.. LOVED it.. I added 2 more gigs to get it running smoother. It ran well. I even had the back ground moving all the time. Loved the lil extra stuff on the desktop like the stock monitor.. the clock.. the calendar..

However.. what made me take it off.. was .. the fact that it would cut off my internet connection every 10 mins. For some reason i would lose all wifi connectivity. It seemed like the computer was knocking out the Router. Somehow it was causing 3 computers at my house to go down. Even trying to reconnect was bad.. cuz it took about a minute. Sucks when your playing world of warcraft and someone jumps me and i freeze.. or im taking a boss and my group dies cuz im frozen and have to reconnect. I dont know what it was doing but my roomate said something that everytime i started my pc it seemed like my computer tried to connect to his. He got a pop up telling him that. After a while it got annoying just doing it while surfing the net or using msn messenger.

Sooooooooo... i took it off and went back to XP Pro. not exactly sure what it was.. i spent 2 weeks trying to figure it out i couldnt. Forums.. fixes..nothing.> Ya i was at SP1.. I can kinda point to something and that would be my wifi card that is part of my Asus P5W DH Deluxe board. THey are beta drivers.. i think somehow the wifi card wasnt working well with my motherboard.

so.. maybe my next pc upgrade will have vista ready..

Preloaded on the wife's HP laptop. No major problems after upgrading to 2GB RAM.

One missed feature, right click -> resize pictures.

wonder how long till they come out with powertoys for vista

+1
I've done a few network setups now with and without wi-fi. OS Flavors ranging from: XP, 2000, Vista & Ubuntu. Vista was by far the biggest piece of shit of the bunch.

Pulled from my rant on my website:

had no untoward problems adding my gf's vista laptop to an established home network, and then switching routers, so adding it (and everything else) to the new router. it actually took much longer getting the comcast cable modem to allow it to connect to the net than it did to set up the computers on the new wifi (netgear router).

I had windows vista ultimate and I didn't like it, I had driver issues and it ran slower than windows xp did, I might switch over once it becomes the mainstream like when windows xp phased out windows 2000.

I am runnning windows xp 64 bit, I don't notice any speed increase because it is 64 bit, but this os is rock solid. I have never crashed or froze up using xp 64.

I was speaking of the connection issue.

It had to be a MAC address or duplicate IP issue that was bringing down the other PC's. You either had to tell your PC to go back to it's default hardware MAC address, or click and tell your router to use its own hardware MAC. Your IP packets were getting mis-routed, causing a slower response time. You didn't say what message was popping up on your roommates PC, but it sounds like a duplicate IP warning. A release/Renew of the IP address should have cleared that up, or removing the static IP address that you probably had on your machine.

i restarted the router a few times. Doesnt restarting the router force it to assign new IPs? since its set to automatically assign it to new computers?

my roomate told me his PC kept on telling him that i was trying to connect to his computer everytime i started my pc

i'll do a search myself but anyone know a tweak that will allow me to open external URL's in firefox instead of IE?

firefox has already been set as the default browser but everytime i click on a link (say from an IM), IE will open up rather than firefox.

If you set FF as the default browser and it's still opening IE when you click a link then either IE was opened later and set back to default or FF wasn't actually set as the default for whatever reason. If you're using an older FF that might have something to do with it.

If you go into the preferences of FF you should be able to find the option to set it as the default browser and that should kick it over.

Otherwise, welcome to the predatory nature of MS and Vista. But believe it or not, Apple is worse. You can't buy hardware for Apple computer from anywhere but Apple for the most part and it's more expensive for identical hardware.

I believe the issue is that FF works as the default browser when clicking links in most places, but not in IM. The problem is IM. It has IE as the default browser.

I ran into a similar issue when I installed a new windows default printer. In FF, it will still use the default printer it has. It had to be something in Windows, that forced them to use their own default printer settings. It's just one of the underhanded things that MS does to force people back to IE.

I would say Sane is onto something. If it's only IM that does it it's probably the IM client. A lot of those types of apps have a "program list" built in. That and some of them are just poorly coded. That's why I end up using Trillian for my IM needs. I really dislike vendor lock in for any reason whatsoever. Which is also why I don't use Apple products either :teeth

it's a shame ya can't answer bill but i did get it fixed.

yahoo messenger. it's a checkbox you need to disable to keep it from opening a new window (which only opens in IE) when you click on a URL

oh and does anyone else get some hangups (lag) when xfering files through the network? i seem to get alot of lag and i believe this is an inherent prob w vista? for example i'll send some files (100-500MB) through to my other box and this one will start to run choppy, like a game with really low fps. any fixes? i'm already running the latest updates on vista as well as my BIOS
