I just bought a laptop for school. There was no way in hell I was going to run vista because its runs like ..crap. I decided on trying my luck with Ubuntu. It is reeaaallly hard to get used to the whole linux thing... but honestly so far I like it more than Vista
Would anyone happen to be linux(ubuntu) savvy and be able to get my integrated cam/mic working :teeth

GL and explore around. I'm pretty new with Linux too. I didn't learn to start using it until about a year ago, and my ability is still very limited.
I only have semi-experience with Red Hat and Suse. Sorry.

While not a ubunto user, I say if you a little research online you'd be able to find out the drivers needed for your particular ATI graphics card (Did you check out ATI's website?)
Samething goes for webcam and microphone.

You are going to need the vendors drivers from the website of your laptop. If they don't have Linux drivers, then it ain't going to work.

Kudos, but don't expect a pleasant end-user experience. That's not what Linux is about (for now). Sorry dude.
But please post up your experiences, I am honestly curious. Frankly, I expect them to be mixed. For all it's shortcomings, Windows (whatever version) has more support for the end-user than any version of Linux. Linux is awesome for the server, but for the desktop it's not yet prime-time. And that's putting it mildly.

I had Ubuntu installed on my system before. But it needed internet access to get this one program so i could install my wireless adapter drivers- which obviously is not gonna work :mad :laughing

Just remember, if Ubuntu doesn't give you exactly what you want, you can try again with a different flavor of Linux, like Fedora or freeBSD or something.

I would download VMWare Server (it's free) and run Ubuntu virtual. That way you have both OS's available. Hopefully you'll have 2GB RAM on your laptop :) .

Dual boot WinXP pro and ubuntu FTW.
What is your course of study? If it's CIS, it's probably not a bad idea at all to be exploring the Linux/Unix world.

Everyone's gotta start somewhere. I'd assume he'd rather get some schoolwork done using his OS as a utility, not simply learning to use his OS through the command line. But I agree, the power is in the command line.

BURRSHEIT... SirFonners, look harder. Some dude in the ubuntu work group, just wrote a generic driver that worked with 99% of all cameras out there!
apt-cache search <package>
would be helpful if you'd tell us which webcam you've got..

Under Windows, if you try to install a generic driver like that, it will just crash a majority of the time. Under Linux, it might not crash, but I would be really surprised if he gets it to work. If it's a commonly used camera that other machines use, he may get lucky, but if it is a surplus Taiwan camera they got a good deal for a gross, I highly doubt he will find a generic driver that works. :nerd

My Ubuntu setup makes windows look like a expensive joke on the end user. It does everything Vista does and more. (Better) Including all the visual effects and fast compositing. It boots in a fraction of the time, has a more efficient file system, better security, more choices in software for every task imaginable, and many unimaginable, and it didn't cost me a cent.
But I am not exactly an average user. Mark my words: Ubuntu IS and WILL change the playing field of Linux vs. MS.

Yeah lets just hope that Linux, cant get down to a complete BASE standard, and video game manufacturers will wake the hell up and start adopting it as a major OS and support it.

sinfonner sell the ACER laptop while you can and before it breaks on ya. ACER is the worst of the worst laptops. gosh I wish you luck.
I am new to linux too....vmware is the best for messing around with other os's and warez.
your webcam should be supported by the vanilla ubuntu install.
