Hi,
On an older FZR 400 the starter begins by spinning merrily but slows fairly quickly, and seems to be generating a fair amount of heat. What is happening? Are the windings starting to leak? Is the starter toast? Opened it up and nothing obvious popped up. Commutator and brushes looked ot be in OK shape.

Cheers

Lou

How long are you needing to spin it for? How large of a battery are you using?

First hook up a voltmeter and see if it's due to decreased input voltage, any starter is gonna spin slower if you aren't giving it as much voltage.

A slower turning starter is going to draw more amperage. Amperage causes heat and heat deteriorates starters. Which came first the chicken or the egg? who knows. But as long as you battery is strong, and your starter cable isn't corroded causing excessive resistance. Then the starter is just tired.

The egg. The egg was a result of cross breeding from two other birds, resulting in the chicken, resulting 'chicken' continued to breed and produce more chicken eggs:teeth
and there were eggs far before there were birds too :teeth

you're missing the point... An egg and chicken are laying in bed, the egg lights up a cigarette and says, "well i just that answers that question."
