Think it would be difficult to find a rental home in the San Jose area that would allow 3 dogs if I pay a nice pet-damage deposit? With a garage for the bikes, and a backyard for the doggies to poop on? Under $2500 a month?
I may be relocating to San Jose in the summer, just trying to get a feel for the rental market down there (don't want an apartment, duplex, or condo due to the bikes n' dogs....a nice '60s or '70s era house would work fine, we don't need anything fancy, 2 or 3 bedrooms is ok but hey 4 would be better.

What size/breed of dog(s) are they?
There are ten breeds that the insurance companies will not cover for neither landlord nor owner (if you bought not rented), so our landlords rarely allow them.
I work for a property management company and we often limit pets to two, unless they're tiny or your application is outstanding - excellent credit scores, job history, etc, etc.
We also have a $250 - $500 deposit per pet, and references are also required.

Yeah, I manage property in the east bay and we're the same as Yanna. Our official stance is,"No attack type dogs. Pits, Rots, Bulls. No dogs over 40 lbs. A letter from vet stating meds are up to date. $500. per pet and only 1 pet." Insurance companies don't cover large breeds even though in 15 years the only dog bite we had is a Chiauwawa(sp) biting a 300 lb. samoan woman on the kneecap. Funny yes but, I still got subpeanoed.

40 lbs? That's weak sauce. One of my dogs goes 110 lbs. He's not an attack type though, he's a Catahoula.

Yep, I had the hardest time finding a house for rent with the two girls. It's funny how they'll rent to cats and small dogs which are incredibly destructive and pee everywhere, but my big harmless beasts were treated like I was trying to keep alligators. Finally had to pay almost 3k in depsoit to get the place I'm in now. I'm really tired of the big dog bias.

Dayum a $3k deposit is painful. One of my dogs is large (110 lbs), the other two are medium (40 to 45 lbs). They don't pee or poop in the house, no problems with that. They just sleep all day and wait for daddy to come home so we can go jog. ;)

Thanks for the info....what are the 10 breeds not covered by insurance?
("The following are 10 types of dogs forbidden by most insurance companies to allow in your rental properties. If you allow them, your insurance company may cancel your policy.")
Pit Bull
Rottweiller
German Shepherd
Husky - Alaskan malamute
Doberman Pinscher
Chow
Great Dane
Saint Bernard
Akita
Wolf hybrids
I love all dogs and housesit/petsit for several clients constantly. It saddens me to see the discrimination, but such is life in today's litigious society. :(
Good luck to ya! :thumbup

I rent apartments and finding one that allows a dog was painful enough... when it was only a 10 LBs yorkie, and I feel that it will be only harder for larger dogs. But well, we are living in the "sue" country so we can get sued for anything you can think of. A tenant can and probably will sue the landlord if they got bit by an aggresive breed and the poor dog will be put on to sleep...

Thankfully the dog I'm getting is classified as a service dog. Years of painful therapy twice a week has finally paid off. I'm going to get a GSD. Kids, it pays to have a mental disability.
