I have a IBM Thinkpad T41p that I just finished setting up recently. I use it when I'm on the ambulance so that in between calls, I can park up next to a library and leach off their wireless network. Everything worked great up until recently and now the damn thing won't connect.

I can get a great signal strength, up to 100% if I'm sitting right in the library. The IBM Thinkadvantage Connections software will connect and go through "Applying TCP/IP Connection" settings, then "Renewing IP Address", then sits on "Waiting for IP Configuration"...sit there for a minute or two, then go "unable to connect".

At home with my own network profile specified, my laptop has no problem connecting.. This problem seems to revolve around unsecured networks that it does not want to connect to. Any one have any suggstions?

The library might have switched, like the one near my house, to WEP or some other form of encryption...(like entering your library card information.)

The t41 was equipped with the IPW2100 card, which had a really snotty driver, and was generally prone to failure. I'd suggest going directly to the IBM (now Lenovo) website and downloading the latest driver and wireless suite, or just switch over to Linux where it works perfectly (yes, I'm kidding... sort of).

If you refresh and look at a list of available wireless networks, you can tell which networks have security encryption turned on my looking for the lock symbol.

True, though the library near my house is set-up where it's an open AP, but the router forwards you to a login page where you have to enter in your library card information before you can start surfing.

Also, maybe the problem is with the library's internet/AP that day.
