I drive a tow truck so I see it all out on the road and most ppl just roll a red light on a right turn. I also do this on my bike but not in my car. I know I can get a ticket for this but it is sure better than getting put on someones hood or worse!

The other day on my bike I had to stop cause someone was in the walk way and the next thing I heard was tires screaching behind me, good thing they had good breaks and didin't hit me.

Does this make sense?

What are you trying to justify? Running a red light?
It’s the same violation and penalty as running any red light and I write them every single day I work.

Watch your mirrors. If someone behind you has locked up their tires and is gonna hit you and because of this you don't stop, I don't think ANY LEO will ticket you. You're still violating the law, yes... but you're doing it to avoid an accident. If you just roll them all the time, you'll get ticketed sooner or later.

Good advice. :thumbup

I see one hellofalot more accidents from vehicles turning right on red when unsafe, than I see rear-end accidents in the far right lane (or right turn pocket). That is a fact.

I would estimate that about 1/2 of the auto ped and auto/bicycle accidents in my town are a result of right turning vehicles and a majority of those are right turn on a red signal (when unsafe or without stopping or both). People LOOK where they perceive the greatest THREAT to be. They don't look to the right because they perceive the threat to their left. You also have A-pillar obstruction issues. By stopping and looking, you increase the odds of seeing the approaching ped. When people are in motion and vehicles are in motion, it is easy for the view of a ped to be blocked by the A-pillar (the post between the windshield and the forward/side window).

If you could erase all DUI and "A-pillar obstruction" fatal collisions in my town, you would have stopped 7 out of the last 9 fatal accidents I investigated.

Yep, as has already been mentioned it's the same penalty as running through a red traffic light straight on. I know because I got one of these last year. :(

I think the bill was around $350 if memory serves. The next time I hear someone saying that we should increase the fine for running red lights I might have to disagree.

I wouldn't. As a pissed off pedestrian/bicyclist, I say double it.
